00:00Four former Volkswagen executives arriving at the commercial criminal
00:05chamber in Braunschweig in Germany on Monday. They were found guilty of fraud
00:10charges for their role in the so-called dieselgate emissions cheating scandal
00:15that shook the automotive industry a decade ago. Nearly four years after the
00:20trial began two of them were given prison sentences of between two and four
00:24and a half years while the other two received suspended sentences. All four
00:28were responsible for various aspects of engine technology at the carmaker.
00:34The scandal began in 2015 when the United States Environmental Protection Agency
00:39issued a notice of violation. It accused the company of rigging engine control
00:44software to let diesel-powered cars pass emission tests while they in fact
00:49emitted far more pollution when actually driving them. This scandal was a major
00:54crisis for the company which has since paid more than 33 billion euros in
00:58fines and compensation to vehicle owners. However this is far from the end of the
01:04story. Monday's verdict can be appealed within a week and prosecutors are
01:08continuing in their bid to find out how widely the emission fraud was known within
01:13the company. There are also reportedly several other criminal proceedings pending.
