00:00On this day in space. On May 25th, 2008, NASA's Phoenix lander arrived on Mars.
00:07Phoenix was NASA's sixth mission to successfully land on Mars, and it was the
00:12first mission to touch down near the planet's north pole. The objective for
00:16this mission was to look for evidence of water ice below the Martian surface.
00:19This would help scientists study the history of climate change on Mars. The
00:23mission would also look for clues about whether the red planet could have been
00:26habitable or even hosted some kind of alien life in the past. Phoenix spent
00:30almost 10 months flying to Mars before it plunged into the atmosphere going close
00:34to 13,000 miles per hour. Parachutes slowed it down to about 5 miles per hour and
00:39Phoenix gently landed after a seven-minute descent. Three Mars orbiter missions
00:44adjusted their orbit so they could be in a good position to watch the landing. This
00:48was the first time that a spacecraft landing on another planet was caught on
00:51camera. And that's what happened on this day in space.
