'Apple negotiated badly,' says analyst as Trump takes aim at iPhone maker

US President Donald Trump threatened once again on May 23, 2025 to ramp up his trade war, recommending a 50 percent tariff on European Union goods starting June 1 and warning Apple he may impose a 25 percent tariff on any iPhones manufactured outside the US. Trump did not give a timeframe for any Apple tariffs. Shares of Apple fell 2.3 percent in early trading. More than 60 million phones are sold in the United States annually, but the country has no smartphone manufacturing. Apple is speeding up plans to make most of its iPhones sold in the United States at factories in India by the end of 2026 to navigate potentially higher tariffs in China, its main manufacturing base, a source told Reuters.

00:00It means that Apple negotiated badly.
00:03Right now, if you push the president too much in a negotiation, this is how he reacts.
00:09And he goes public and he shames you.
00:13And that is not productive.
00:14Apple needs to go back and tell the president what he wants to hear, which is in a certain
00:21time frame, they can move production of iPhones to the United States.
00:25It really just is a matter of what is that time frame?
00:29Is it three years?
00:30Is it five years?
00:31Is it 10 years?
00:32And what are the milestones that they can show along the way?
00:36Saying no, we're not going to do it is not an option right now.
00:39It's not an option for other countries and it's not an option for American companies.
00:43They need to negotiate and they need to negotiate in good faith so it doesn't come to this.
00:50Well, it just adds to complications for Apple because, of course, Apple has already flagged
00:56that it was going to try and move a chunk more production to India because of the threat
01:02of tariffs hanging over China.
01:04And so by trying to diversify its production base, it was hoping that it could escape more
01:10onerous tariffs.
01:11But this certainly doesn't give now Apple an exit card and it overcomplicates the matter.
01:20That's why you've seen Apple shares fall back even further.
01:23They're down by just under 20 percent so far this year, underlining the production headache
01:30really for Apple going forward.
01:32The president of the United States can do a lot of things and it's unclear whether he
01:38would be only targeting Apple.
01:41If he did get to a point where he's only tariffing Apple's phones, then obviously they would have
01:48the right to complain about maybe not putting a tariff on phones that come from Korea.
01:54And then he could do that.
01:56We don't know.
01:57The intention here isn't to target one company.
02:01The intention is to bring production of phones to the United States.
02:04And it doesn't matter if it's iPhones or Androids.
02:07So we don't know what negotiation is with Samsung.
02:13That could be happening in the background.
02:15And it's possible the president is trying to make these gains with Apple before he approaches
02:19Samsung or before his administration requires other handset makers to move the production
02:27to the United States.
02:28It is part of Trump's modus operandi to single out whether it's countries or in some cases
02:36companies for specific treatment, but then potentially roll back.
02:42He wants all to play along to his tune and his way of thinking.
02:48And this is a way of trying to extricate more pledges, I think, from Apple going forward to
02:54move more production back to the United States.
03:24The deal is absolutely systemic.
03:26The deal also happens when it's not, isn't ...
03:30When the world's going back, there's not much recognise which Customers will include the
03:32women's business as if they're helping them.
03:34Most animals don't implement the same boat as if they're affecting the people's
03:36their veterans, but they're helping them to actually on their salary.
03:38Before they agree with me, we won't do that, but for the month, we've none of us
03:40already rushed an audience for the month.
03:40The uncle was over the month from now thank you again to the country.
03:43The uncle's opening in the front row has been booked in the interim trip while
