00:01Italy's constitutional court has ruled that two women can now register as
00:05parents of a child on a birth certificate. It's said that it was
00:10unconstitutional for parental rights to be restricted to the biological mother
00:14alone in families with same-sex parents. Advocates for LGBTQ plus celebrated the
00:22ruling saying it was quote a historic day for civil rights in Italy.
00:30The group said the ruling served as a reminder to politicians that it's no
00:55longer possible to pretend they don't exist constitutionally.
01:01I can be contrary to a tree, but it's not that that tree will disappear only because I
01:05deny its existence. These children have two mothers or two parents or a single
01:12LGBTQ plus. It's not that not to recognize the other parents it will
01:17make it disappear. They will continue to grow with two parents or two mothers.
01:21So...
01:23Previous to the ruling, in order to have legal rights and responsibility over a child in Italy, the
01:29biological mother of the same-sex family had to adopt a child.
