00:00Oh no.
00:01Oh.
00:02Oh.
00:03Oh.
00:04Oh.
00:05Oh.
00:06Oh.
00:07Oh.
00:08Oh.
00:09Oh.
00:10This is a methophone.
00:12It is exactly what it looks like.
00:14A clear piece of acrylic shaped like an iPhone.
00:16But why does it exist?
00:17My friend is actually the inventor and creator of these, and he told me that what he wanted
00:21to test was if we're all so addicted to our phones, then could you potentially curb somebody's
00:28phone by replacing the feeling of having a phone in your pocket with something that feels
00:33exactly the same?
00:34Now, I commentate on technology's impact on society, right?
00:37So obviously I have something to say here.
00:40I think the reason 13 million people and counting are intrigued about that video of me in the
00:46boba shop and why this is so completely sold out right now is because this little piece
00:51of acrylic feels like a physical artifact that directly responds to this collective tension
00:57that we all feel about how our devices, which are meant to make us more connected, are actually
01:03having the exact opposite effect.
01:04This is not news.
01:05I don't need to record this.
01:06But even as we're all astutely aware of that, like, what are we supposed to do?
01:11We're all just individuals up against what?
01:14The entirety of big tech?
01:16And I think that's why this little piece of acrylic feels so empowering.
01:21I mean, honestly, look, have I used my phone less in the past week that I've been carrying
01:26this around with me?
01:27Probably not.
01:28But just the idea that I could have something in my life, something I can touch and hold,
01:33and the conversation that this little guy is sparking online, that's what really matters.
01:38But what do you think, really?
01:39I mean, do you think that a single piece of acrylic could actually start to help us get
01:44back in touch with our humanity?
01:46Or is this just a weird party trick?
01:48Oh, and if you know why this is called a methophone, drop that knowledge in the comments.
01:53Drop that.
