00:00I think the last time I was here was more than ten years ago.
00:05It was so good to be back in London and particularly I get to come visit LSE
00:12after serving eight years as the president of Taiwan.
00:17Being at LSE brings back so many fond memories from when I was a graduate student here.
00:26At LSE I met students and faculty from all over the world and from different fields of study.
00:34I thoroughly enjoyed the diversity and the academic environment here
00:39where discussions of issues relating to our respective countries and the world are strongly encouraged.
00:48One of my favorite place or places to be, guess what, was the kitchens of the dorms.
00:57Peteer on Rosemary Avenue.
01:01Even though there was a cafeteria on the ground floor, each floor had a kitchen.
01:09As a student we get to go there to take a break, have some tea or snack and even make yourself a bowl of soups.
01:21It was there that I met quite a few interesting people who know and who knew so much about the things I did not know.
01:31So I really enjoyed speaking to them and learning from them.
01:36It was during these years I spent at LSE that made my ability to master the language, of course the English language,
01:46As well as my communication skills improved dramatically.
01:51I also learned to think critically but more importantly to always listen and pay attention to other people's points of view,
02:00Especially those who I disagree with.
02:03My experience at LSE made me the kind of trade negotiator I was
02:10And it prepared me for my career in academia and above all in politics.
