00:00:57Kareen, it's great to see you again.
00:00:59Thanks for inviting me.
00:01:00And I want to thank you for helping me out
00:01:01with this latest edition of Expert Coin Magic Made Easy.
00:01:05This particular tape is going to be on magic
00:01:07with coins and handkerchiefs,
00:01:08and I see you happen to be wearing
00:01:09a lovely silk handkerchief.
00:01:11Do you think I could borrow that for a few minutes?
00:01:14Thank you very much,
00:01:15because what I will do is show you a miracle
00:01:18with your handkerchief and my half dollar.
00:01:24That's a half dollar, a 50-cent piece of silver coin,
00:01:27and you know they go as quickly as they come.
00:01:29But this being magic, they never go far,
00:01:31and it comes back just like that.
00:01:34You're probably saying that was marvelous.
00:01:35Would you do it again?
00:01:36I think so. I will do it one more time.
00:01:39I'll actually show you the handkerchief
00:01:40with the coin inside.
00:01:42I will wrap it up securely,
00:01:44and if you hold the ends and don't let go,
00:01:45you'll actually see me draw that coin
00:01:48right through the very fibers of the silk itself.
00:01:51The coin comes out,
00:01:53and if you let go of the ends,
00:01:54you'll see the handkerchief is...
00:01:56Absolutely unscathed.
00:01:57Absolutely in perfect shape.
00:01:59Now you might be saying,
00:02:00well, I wonder if you could do that again,
00:02:02perhaps a bit more visibly.
00:02:04Once again, I'd be happy to do it.
00:02:05I'm glad you asked.
00:02:06All you have to do is watch.
00:02:08You'll actually see that coin rise
00:02:10right up through the silk itself,
00:02:12once again, no damage.
00:02:15Now you're probably saying,
00:02:16well, I wasn't expecting that.
00:02:17I wonder if you'd be willing to do that
00:02:19one more time as well.
00:02:20Once again, I'd be more than happy to do it.
00:02:22Watch very closely.
00:02:24Of course, maybe you've heard how magicians feel
00:02:25about repeating tricks.
00:02:27I'm no exception.
00:02:28That coin is gone,
00:02:30and that, Corrine,
00:02:31is the coin and the handkerchief.
00:02:41Hi, I'm David Roth,
00:02:43and welcome to another volume of
00:02:45Expert Coin Magic Made Easy.
00:02:47In this volume, I'll be talking about magic
00:02:49with coins and handkerchiefs,
00:02:51specifically silk handkerchiefs like this one,
00:02:55because they are much better for magic
00:02:58than linen handkerchiefs.
00:02:59Let's say white linen handkerchiefs,
00:03:01which are a little bit too stiff
00:03:03for some of the necessary manipulations.
00:03:05And also, linen handkerchiefs
00:03:07very often are not opaque,
00:03:09and it's very important for a lot of these routines
00:03:12that spectators can't see the coins
00:03:14once they're wrapped up within the handkerchief.
00:03:17So this is a 18-inch silk handkerchief
00:03:20with a rolled hem.
00:03:22As you can see, it's got a hand-rolled hem
00:03:23as opposed to a folded hem.
00:03:25Makes it a little bit easier to work with,
00:03:27but it's a small point.
00:03:29The various moves that I'm about to teach you,
00:03:32some of them are very old.
00:03:35Most of them are from the turn of the century.
00:03:36Some of them go back to as far back as 1868
00:03:40by Robert Houdin in his classic book,
00:03:42The Secrets of Conjuring and Magic.
00:03:45When you link these moves together,
00:03:47they become a routine.
00:03:49If you recall, the first effect that happened
00:03:51was the appearance of a coin.
00:03:54Coin starts off in the classic palm position
00:03:56of the right hand.
00:03:57I was able to borrow the silk handkerchief
00:04:00from Corrine, who was helping me during the tape.
00:04:03But you can use your own handkerchief,
00:04:04or if you spot someone that happens to be wearing
00:04:07the right kind of handkerchief,
00:04:08the right size,
00:04:09without too busy a pattern,
00:04:11because I think that makes it harder
00:04:13to appreciate the magic,
00:04:14then by all means, borrow the handkerchief,
00:04:17if not have one of your own ready.
00:04:19So the coin is classic palmed.
00:04:20The handkerchief is displayed on both sides
00:04:23by crossing the hands, keeping the coin hidden.
00:04:26When you finally want to produce the coin,
00:04:28drape the handkerchief over your left hand.
00:04:31And if the handkerchief has been folded in quarters,
00:04:34it might have some fine creases in it.
00:04:35You can use those creases
00:04:37to determine the exact center of the handkerchief,
00:04:39the point where the creases cross, right there.
00:04:42And you can use that as a guideline
00:04:44to put that right over your palm.
00:04:46Coin is still classic palmed.
00:04:47Notice I've placed the handkerchief over my hand
00:04:50so that the corners are at the elbow
00:04:52and over the fingertips,
00:04:53as opposed to holding it flatwise.
00:04:55This way, flat, flat, you want the corners like this.
00:04:58It makes the next move just a little bit easier.
00:05:01To load the classic palmed coin into the handkerchief,
00:05:05you grab the corner of the handkerchief,
00:05:06you move forward,
00:05:08then you move back.
00:05:10This is sort of a feint or a preparatory move.
00:05:12As you come forward again,
00:05:14the classic palmed coin is dropped
00:05:17into the right, the left hand.
00:05:19The right hand continues moving forward.
00:05:21The left thumb comes down on the coin,
00:05:24keeping it in place,
00:05:25so that the right hand can only go forward so much.
00:05:28This prevents you from accidentally
00:05:29pulling the handkerchief and the coin
00:05:31off of your left fingers.
00:05:32Now, come back with the right hand
00:05:35and the coin comes up into view,
00:05:37being pushed up to the fingertips.
00:05:39At the fingertips, underneath the handkerchief,
00:05:41a very, very lovely appearance of a half a dollar.
00:05:44And not a difficult move at all.
00:05:46Starts off in the classic palm.
00:05:48You go forward, come back,
00:05:49forward again, dropping it into the palm,
00:05:52pushing it up to the fingertips as you would draw,
00:05:54raising it up in a vertical position,
00:05:56you've produced the coin.
00:05:58That was the first effect
00:05:59in the short coin and silk routine
00:06:01that I did in the performance part of the video.
00:06:04From here, you are in a perfect position
00:06:06to do a very lovely vanish
00:06:08called a drop vanish,
00:06:09another move that is very, very old.
00:06:11And I wish I could tell you who originated these moves,
00:06:14but that's how old they are.
00:06:15No one really knows.
00:06:16They've been in print in many, many books before.
00:06:19I'm actually quite surprised
00:06:20that they haven't been put on videotape yet.
00:06:22I think it's important for the magical record
00:06:25for slides like these to be put on a video.
00:06:27So you're going to do the drop vanish,
00:06:29which means that you're going to take this corner,
00:06:34which you have never released
00:06:35from the point that you've made the coin appear,
00:06:38come forward over the coin and down.
00:06:42And when you get to about this point,
00:06:44you release the coin,
00:06:45which falls onto the right fingers,
00:06:49which continue to hold that corner of the silk.
00:06:51They catch the coin,
00:06:53which the spectators believe is up here
00:06:54at your left fingertips.
00:06:56You simply release that fold.
00:06:59The handkerchief drops.
00:07:00That is a surprise
00:07:01because they thought you had a coin there.
00:07:03Let me do it for you up to speed
00:07:05so you get a feeling for the move.
00:07:07You're from here.
00:07:08You've got the corner.
00:07:10You come forward, drop.
00:07:11I've already caught the coin.
00:07:12It's on my fingertips.
00:07:14They think the coin is here under the silk.
00:07:16The silk is dropped.
00:07:18The coin vanishes.
00:07:19Immediately take both corners of the silk
00:07:22so you can show it on both sides.
00:07:24The coin is classic palmed.
00:07:26The way I reproduce the coin at that point,
00:07:28again, it's an attempt to make the routine smooth.
00:07:31This is coming up over the left thumb.
00:07:33This gives it a nice action.
00:07:34And as it comes away, the coin is revealed.
00:07:36So you've produced a coin.
00:07:38You've vanished the coin.
00:07:39And now you've reproduced the coin in a different way.
00:07:42This is an original coin production.
00:07:44It is not difficult, but it has to be done smoothly.
00:07:47Coin is in the classic palm.
00:07:49Handkerchief shown.
00:07:51Left hand drops its corner
00:07:52so the hand can be seen empty.
00:07:54Comes over.
00:07:55And just when it's passing the right hand,
00:07:57the coin is dropped,
00:07:58caught on the left fingertips.
00:08:01Without pausing, the right hand pulls the handkerchief through,
00:08:04revealing the coin.
00:08:05Appearance, vanish, and reappearance.
00:08:08Now, the next effect in the routine I opened with
00:08:12is a very, very classic effect.
00:08:15And it's based on a trick handkerchief fold
00:08:18that is used in many, many routines.
00:08:20It is the classic handkerchief fold.
00:08:22As far as I know, it first appeared in print
00:08:24in Robert Houdin's book,
00:08:25The Secrets of Conjuring and Magic, 1868.
00:08:29And it is a true classic move.
00:08:32The coin is held at the left fingertips.
00:08:35The handkerchief is thrown over the coin.
00:08:37Once again, you can use the creases,
00:08:39the natural creases in the silk,
00:08:41to let you determine the center of the handkerchief.
00:08:43And that's just where the creases cross there.
00:08:45And that's exactly where I place the coin.
00:08:48Now, in this position,
00:08:50coin at the fingertips, covered by the silk,
00:08:53you're going to make a very, very slight adjustment.
00:08:56The right hand comes over,
00:08:58grabs the coin,
00:08:59so that the left thumb can pinch
00:09:02a little of the material behind it.
00:09:03Just like that.
00:09:05From here to there.
00:09:08Pinching a small amount of material.
00:09:10That's all you have to do.
00:09:11Now, you offer to show them the coin one last time.
00:09:15Grab the front end of the silk, the front edge.
00:09:18Bring it back over.
00:09:19Now, don't bring it back too far,
00:09:21or you'll reveal your fingertips,
00:09:22and you don't really want to do that.
00:09:24Just bring it back far enough to show the coin.
00:09:27At this point, instead of moving it back over the coin,
00:09:31when you're here,
00:09:32you can either pick up this section of cloth back here,
00:09:35this piece of silk,
00:09:37or you can simply throw both pieces together over the coin.
00:09:42The coin is now outside the handkerchief.
00:09:44It appears to be inside, but it is now outside.
00:09:47Let me go over that again,
00:09:49because it is a classic move and used in many routines.
00:09:52There is the coin.
00:09:54The handkerchief is thrown over it,
00:09:55lies right about the center.
00:09:58The right hand makes a slight adjustment
00:10:00as the left finger, the left thumb,
00:10:02gets a little pinch of cloth right over there,
00:10:04behind the coin.
00:10:06You offer to give the spectators one more look,
00:10:09bring the handkerchief back,
00:10:10revealing the coin,
00:10:11and either grab this extra piece of silk,
00:10:13or simply let them both fall forward like that.
00:10:16The coin is now behind the silk.
00:10:19Now, there are two ways to do this fold.
00:10:22This is the method where you pinch the silk behind the coin,
00:10:25and you get a simple half fold
00:10:28where the coin is behind the handkerchief.
00:10:30In this position, you want to twist the ends.
00:10:34Of course, if you just start to twist the ends,
00:10:36they might bring the coin into view just like that.
00:10:38So this is a very important point.
00:10:40Put the index finger and the third finger
00:10:43on either side of the coin, touching the edges.
00:10:46This way, you can now twist the coin
00:10:48without revealing it prematurely.
00:10:51Now, in this position,
00:10:52I can't show you this side of the coin
00:10:54because it would be completely exposed,
00:10:56but I can certainly show you this side of the coin,
00:10:58and it's a perfect illusion.
00:10:59It really looks like it's been wrapped up,
00:11:01the ends twisted securely inside the handkerchief.
00:11:04This is a wonderful move, should be practiced.
00:11:07Let me point out, if you haven't already noticed,
00:11:10it's a discrepancy move.
00:11:12There's something wrong with the move.
00:11:14It isn't exactly the way it would look
00:11:17if you were doing the action for real.
00:11:19Remember, if you really showed the coin,
00:11:21covered it with the silk,
00:11:25gave somebody one last look, and moved it forward,
00:11:28you'd be in this position again.
00:11:30But notice, when you actually do the move,
00:11:32and take the piece of silk from the back,
00:11:34you're not in that position.
00:11:35You're in this position.
00:11:37Your hand is in view, when normally it wouldn't be.
00:11:39It's a discrepancy.
00:11:41It's a massive discrepancy,
00:11:43but it's never noticed if the move is done smoothly.
00:11:45This move has been done for over 200 years.
00:11:48There's no question about it.
00:11:49It's deceptiveness.
00:11:51Just keep in mind, do it with confidence.
00:11:53Don't hesitate.
00:11:54Put the first and the third fingers
00:11:56on either edge of the coin, on either side,
00:11:58so that you can twist it up.
00:11:59At this point, you'd hand the ends to a spectator to hold.
00:12:03While they're holding the ends,
00:12:04it's a very easy matter for you,
00:12:06since the coin is simply covered on one side,
00:12:09to withdraw the coin,
00:12:10apparently squeezing it right through
00:12:12the very material itself.
00:12:14It's a wonderful illusion of the coin
00:12:16penetrating the silk.
00:12:18Now, there is a variation on this move,
00:12:21just to keep things complete,
00:12:23and that's doing it this way.
00:12:26You show the coin.
00:12:28You cover it with the silk the same way,
00:12:30but this time,
00:12:31instead of merely getting a small pinch,
00:12:33like that, behind the coin,
00:12:35in preparation for the handkerchief move,
00:12:38and this might be familiar to you
00:12:41if you've read a lot of the old magic books.
00:12:43Perhaps you're familiar with this illustration.
00:12:46It's a very, very famous illustration.
00:12:48It was in the Houdan book.
00:12:51It was in the Hoffman Modern Magic book.
00:12:53It's been reprinted in dozens,
00:12:55maybe hundreds of magic books over the years.
00:12:58The coin is held like this.
00:13:00The left hand lets go underneath the handkerchief.
00:13:04The right hand, clipping the coin like this,
00:13:06turns completely over,
00:13:09and then the left hand grips it.
00:13:11In this way,
00:13:13when you raise the front end of the handkerchief
00:13:15to give them one last look,
00:13:17they see cloth underneath the coin.
00:13:20Very convincing.
00:13:21Not only that,
00:13:22but when you move both sides of the silk forward,
00:13:25now the coin is wrapped up on both sides,
00:13:28so that when you twist the ends of the silk,
00:13:30it can be displayed very cleanly on both sides.
00:13:33It's completely wrapped up.
00:13:34As a matter of fact, in this condition,
00:13:36you can give the coin to a spectator
00:13:38and let them hold it,
00:13:39and there are no discrepancies at all.
00:13:41It feels exactly the way it's supposed to feel.
00:13:44So don't forget that there are two ways to do this.
00:13:47One is the pinch,
00:13:48which gives you a half a fold,
00:13:51or simply the coin is concealed on one side,
00:13:53doing it that way,
00:13:55only concealed on one side.
00:13:57The other way is to do it with the twist,
00:14:00where the coin is placed under the handkerchief.
00:14:03Now, I don't actually hold it like this.
00:14:05I was simply demonstrating this
00:14:06because this is the illustration
00:14:07that is in so many of the older books.
00:14:09What I really do is simply hold the coin like this,
00:14:12like a regular human being,
00:14:14thumb on top, fingers on the bottom,
00:14:16turn it over,
00:14:17reach for the front edge,
00:14:19so you can pull it back, revealing the coin,
00:14:21and now when you come forward,
00:14:23you have a full fold,
00:14:24covering both sides of the coin,
00:14:26so that when you twist it up,
00:14:28it can be shown very cleanly on both sides.
00:14:30This is the classic handkerchief fold.
00:14:33It's used in many of the routines in this book
00:14:35and should be practiced,
00:14:36although it is not a difficult move.
00:14:38It should be practiced with both hands.
00:14:41You can use it as a penetration,
00:14:43or you could use it simply as a vanish,
00:14:45stealing the coin out after you had made the fold,
00:14:48but there are better ways to vanish the coin
00:14:50from a handkerchief,
00:14:50and I think using it as a penetration
00:14:52is the best application of the move.
00:14:55So, in the routine I did,
00:14:57the coin was wrapped up,
00:15:00the pinch move is made,
00:15:02it's shown,
00:15:03it's replaced,
00:15:05it's twisted,
00:15:06the ends are handed to the spectator,
00:15:07and the coin is extracted right through the silk.
00:15:10That was the penetration.
00:15:11Then I offered to repeat the penetration,
00:15:14and in this case,
00:15:14you want to do something a little bit different,
00:15:16a little bit more visual perhaps,
00:15:18because it is a repetition.
00:15:19So I do a lovely piece of magic
00:15:21called the visible coin through silk by Dudley Fossum.
00:15:25This appeared in an old Phoenix magazine
00:15:27about 50 years ago,
00:15:29which is just one more reason
00:15:30why you should read all those old books
00:15:32and all those old magazines,
00:15:33because you never know what kind of gems
00:15:35you're going to find.
00:15:37In the visible coin penetration,
00:15:39the silk is held in a slightly different way.
00:15:42It is clipped at the edge
00:15:44between the index finger and the second finger,
00:15:47these fingers are curled into the palm,
00:15:49holding the silk like this.
00:15:50This gives you a little bit of a extended silk.
00:15:53Rather than holding it this way,
00:15:55you get a little bit more extension,
00:15:56a little bit more cover
00:15:57for the move that you're about to do.
00:16:00The move is this.
00:16:02There's a feint involved.
00:16:03You cover the handkerchief,
00:16:04bringing the coin to about the center,
00:16:07uncover it, revealing the coin.
00:16:09This time around,
00:16:10as I cover the handkerchief,
00:16:12my right thumb, which can leave,
00:16:14it's not used in holding the silk,
00:16:16so it's free to move around.
00:16:18It's going to grab that coin,
00:16:20just like that,
00:16:21holding it against the second finger,
00:16:22not the first finger,
00:16:23because that's too close to the top
00:16:25and it might be seen.
00:16:26Holding it by the second finger,
00:16:28it's going to take the coin
00:16:29from the left fingertips,
00:16:32which apparently move the coin
00:16:33to the center of the silk.
00:16:35The coin is actually here.
00:16:37Undercover, behind the silk,
00:16:39you let go and move the coin up
00:16:41behind the silk openly
00:16:43and in the same motion,
00:16:44straighten out the folds of the silk.
00:16:46It simply looks like the silk
00:16:47has been covered with the coin.
00:16:49The coin has been covered by the silk.
00:16:51The silk is smoothed out.
00:16:53The coin is actually here.
00:16:54You make a magical gesture
00:16:56and your left thumb pushes that coin
00:16:58visibly up into view.
00:16:59It's very, very magical.
00:17:01Anytime something moves all by itself,
00:17:04it's magical,
00:17:05whether it's a coin or a card
00:17:07or an elephant.
00:17:10Remove the coin,
00:17:10showing the handkerchief is in fact unscathed
00:17:13and offer to repeat the illusion.
00:17:16You're going to apparently repeat the trick,
00:17:18but this time you're going to vanish the coin,
00:17:20except the actions look absolutely identical,
00:17:23so it's very, very deceptive for the spectator.
00:17:25Show the coin again,
00:17:27cover it again,
00:17:28do the feint, uncover the coin.
00:17:30Once again, you're gripping it
00:17:32with the index finger and the second finger,
00:17:34third and fourth finger curled into the palm.
00:17:36Again, the right thumb's going to grab that coin
00:17:39as you cover it.
00:17:40And this time,
00:17:42as you cover the coin,
00:17:43notice how the right hand can move back
00:17:45until it's over the shirt pocket.
00:17:48Perfect position,
00:17:49perfect cover from the front,
00:17:51perfect position to drop that coin
00:17:53right into the pocket.
00:17:55Immediately the right hand comes back,
00:17:57apparently takes the coin through the silk.
00:18:00Left hand comes out,
00:18:01is shown empty.
00:18:02You're about to do a beautiful,
00:18:04complete coin vanish,
00:18:05so make the most of it.
00:18:06Grab one of the lower corners,
00:18:08release the silk.
00:18:10The coin is gone.
00:18:11Your hands are empty.
00:18:13You've done a lovely coin routine,
00:18:15and the miracle is over.
00:18:24Let's take a closer look at that
00:18:26breast pocket coin vanish,
00:18:27because it's a true utility move.
00:18:29It's a complete vanish,
00:18:30very deceptive,
00:18:31very good angles.
00:18:32It's a move that you can use all the time.
00:18:35Now, notice during the performance,
00:18:36I was wearing a jacket.
00:18:37During the explanation, I'm wearing a shirt,
00:18:39but it makes absolutely no difference
00:18:41in the handling or the timing of the move.
00:18:43You might want to put a towel
00:18:46or a Kleenex in the pocket
00:18:48to keep it open.
00:18:49It'll make the move a little bit easier.
00:18:51That applies to the jacket as well.
00:18:53Once again, the handkerchief is held
00:18:55between the index finger and second finger.
00:18:57These two fingers curled into the palm,
00:18:59so you get a little extension,
00:19:01a little added cover,
00:19:02and it also frees the thumb,
00:19:03because the thumb is what really does the move
00:19:06in this particular move.
00:19:08Hold the coin up at the fingertips vertically.
00:19:11The right hand comes over.
00:19:13The first move is a feint.
00:19:14Get the coin to about the center
00:19:15of the silk handkerchief,
00:19:17and then reveal it.
00:19:18That's the feint.
00:19:19Once again, don't change the grip at all,
00:19:22but this time when you cover the handkerchief,
00:19:24that right thumb is going to clip the coin
00:19:26against the second finger,
00:19:28not the first finger, second finger.
00:19:30Take it, obviously, without hesitating.
00:19:32The right hand continues to move
00:19:34back toward the pocket
00:19:35as the left hand moves toward the center
00:19:37of the handkerchief.
00:19:38Notice you really are in a perfect position.
00:19:41It cannot be seen from the front
00:19:43to effectively drop that coin
00:19:46right into the pocket,
00:19:47whether it's a jacket pocket or a shirt pocket.
00:19:50At this point, don't hesitate.
00:19:52Come forward.
00:19:52Apparently, take the coin through the silk.
00:19:55Bring the left hand out.
00:19:56Show it empty.
00:19:58Go for a corner.
00:20:00Release the handkerchief.
00:20:01The coin drops and vanishes at the same time.
00:20:04Show both sides of the silk.
00:20:06Let them see your hands are empty.
00:20:07You've done a very convincing
00:20:09breast pocket vanish.
00:20:20Corinne, I'll show you a beautiful effect
00:20:22with this silk handkerchief of yours
00:20:24and my silver half dollar.
00:20:26That's a half a dollar, a 50-cent piece of silver coin.
00:20:29And even though the coin is wrapped up
00:20:31and the ends are in full view,
00:20:32it doesn't matter
00:20:33because with a simple snap of the fingers,
00:20:35I can make a change
00:20:36into a copper English penny.
00:20:38Now, is that a real coin?
00:20:39Is that a true copper coin?
00:20:41It absolutely is.
00:20:42Maybe you'd like to see me do that one more time.
00:20:45I'd be more than happy to.
00:20:46Watch the coin.
00:20:48Watch the silk.
00:20:49The ends are in view.
00:20:50The coin is inside.
00:20:51With a snap of the fingers,
00:20:52it changes once again back
00:20:54into a silver half a dollar.
00:20:56A miracle.
00:20:57You're probably saying
00:20:58that's one of the greatest feats of coin magic
00:21:00I've ever seen in my entire life.
00:21:02I think so too.
00:21:03Would you like to see something even more amazing?
00:21:05Is that a real silver half dollar?
00:21:08It most certainly is.
00:21:09Watch the coin.
00:21:10Watch my hands.
00:21:12Watch that silver coin change to copper
00:21:15faster than you can bat an eye.
00:21:17And that's the color-changing coin.
00:21:20Wow.
00:21:29This next effect is the color-changing coin,
00:21:32but it's really an application of several coin switches
00:21:35or changes that are used with a silk handkerchief.
00:21:38The first move, again,
00:21:39it's a true utility move,
00:21:42and it's called the Gypsy Switch.
00:21:44It's a very old move.
00:21:46It has been erroneously credited
00:21:48to more recent performers
00:21:50on some other tapes I have seen,
00:21:51but let me tell you,
00:21:52this move can be found directly in Sacks' Sleight of Hand, 1878.
00:21:57They don't get too much older than that.
00:21:59Actually, they do,
00:22:00but as far as silks go,
00:22:01it's an old move.
00:22:03The Gypsy Switch is this.
00:22:05You're going to be switching silver coin for a copper coin.
00:22:09The copper coin is in finger-palm position in the left hand
00:22:12as you hold the corners of the silk
00:22:14with the right and the left hand.
00:22:15Finger-palm coin doesn't get in the way.
00:22:18You can show both sides of the silk,
00:22:19and the hand looks natural.
00:22:21Once again, drape it over the left hand.
00:22:23This alone is a very disarming position
00:22:26because it appears that your hand is palm-up and empty
00:22:29simply because of the position,
00:22:30and yet the coin is right there
00:22:32in an open finger-palm position.
00:22:34Right there,
00:22:35except instead of being curled into finger-palm,
00:22:38it's in an open finger-palm.
00:22:40The half-dollar is shown and placed on top,
00:22:43quietly, of course,
00:22:45so that you don't hear anything,
00:22:46is placed on top of the English penny,
00:22:48and the coin is displayed this way,
00:22:50both hands palm-up.
00:22:52Here comes the move.
00:22:54All you do is grab the forward edge of both coins,
00:22:58not the rear edge,
00:23:00the forward edge.
00:23:01Remember, the silver coin is directly on top of the copper coin.
00:23:04Absolutely.
00:23:05So by grabbing the forward edge of both coins,
00:23:09very slowly, you're going to bring this forward,
00:23:12flipping it forward like that,
00:23:14and then put these right back on your hand.
00:23:16So you can see that the silver coin never really gets wrapped up,
00:23:19and the copper coin becomes wrapped
00:23:22within the confines of the handkerchief
00:23:24by flipping it forward like that.
00:23:26Let me go over that again
00:23:27so you get the correct idea of what's going on.
00:23:30Copper coin is finger-palmed.
00:23:32Silver coin is placed on top of the finger-palmed coin.
00:23:36Obviously, no noise.
00:23:39Keep that in mind.
00:23:40You're going to grab the forward edge of both coins.
00:23:43My index finger is touching the silk
00:23:45with the copper coin underneath it.
00:23:47There's the silver coin on top.
00:23:48You're going to flip the handkerchief out like that
00:23:51and place it right back on to the left fingers.
00:23:54In this position,
00:23:56with your thumb holding the coins in place,
00:23:58the right hand grabs the ends,
00:24:01and you can lift the copper coin,
00:24:03which is now inside the silk.
00:24:05Lift it up to the left fingertips.
00:24:07Of course, from the front, everything is covered.
00:24:09You can tug on it so they can see that the coin,
00:24:12that a coin, is really inside.
00:24:14They believe it's the silver coin.
00:24:15Release the ends.
00:24:17You could, of course, have a spectator hold them at that point.
00:24:19Make a magic pass.
00:24:21And when you reveal, by pulling back the silk,
00:24:24the coin is changed to a copper coin.
00:24:26To continue this,
00:24:28you can repeat the change again with a slight variation.
00:24:31Here is the variation.
00:24:33Some people feel
00:24:34that putting the copper coin directly on top of the silver coin,
00:24:38grabbing them at the front,
00:24:39flipping everything forward,
00:24:41is not very deceptive.
00:24:43It is a discrepancy move.
00:24:44And to a very observant person,
00:24:46they might notice
00:24:47that it doesn't look quite the way it would look
00:24:49if you were actually wrapping the coins up.
00:24:52However,
00:24:53there is a more convincing way to do the move.
00:24:55Personally, I think the discrepancy is extremely minor
00:24:58and is not noticed
00:24:59as long as the move is done briskly,
00:25:02crisply,
00:25:03without hesitating and with confidence.
00:25:05But, if you want to see a move that is more convincing,
00:25:08the copper coin is still in the open finger palm position.
00:25:12Only this time,
00:25:13the silver coin is not placed on top of the copper coin.
00:25:16It is placed on the palm.
00:25:18There is the copper coin.
00:25:20That's where my fingers end.
00:25:21This is where the palm begins in this area.
00:25:23It's on my palm.
00:25:24Copper coin is here underneath the silk.
00:25:27Copper coin,
00:25:28silver coin.
00:25:29In this position, if you close the left fingers,
00:25:33like that,
00:25:34the copper coin is now over the silver coin
00:25:38with my fingers and a layer of silk in between.
00:25:41Do you understand?
00:25:42Copper coin is now here,
00:25:44but because I'm closing my fingers,
00:25:46it gets folded over
00:25:48and is now over the silver coin
00:25:49with a layer of silk in between.
00:25:52In this position,
00:25:53the right thumb contacts the silk here.
00:25:56Those are my left fingernails,
00:25:58right underneath the silk,
00:25:59because I closed my hand into a fist.
00:26:02The right thumb contacts the silk
00:26:04and presses down slightly,
00:26:06allowing the left fingers to open up.
00:26:10A bit more convincing way of wrapping the coins,
00:26:12you can now take both coins together through the silk,
00:26:15toss the silk out.
00:26:17You have a full fold around the silk.
00:26:19It's not as if they are merely behind it,
00:26:21as in the first method.
00:26:23You have a full fold behind it.
00:26:25Coins can be wrapped up if you choose.
00:26:27The ends can be twisted,
00:26:28or you can simply place it back onto the left fingertips.
00:26:31And once again, grab the ends,
00:26:33tug to show that the coin is in there,
00:26:35and you can bring the copper coin within the handkerchief
00:26:38right up to the fingertips.
00:26:40Tug on it.
00:26:41They can see it through the silk.
00:26:42The silver coin stays finger-palmed.
00:26:45And after the proper magic words are uttered,
00:26:48you can throw back the silk,
00:26:49revealing the coin has changed back to a copper coin.
00:26:52Now, in the actual routine in the performance,
00:26:55if you go back,
00:26:56you'll notice that the first change was done
00:26:58with the left hand.
00:27:00The second change was done with the right hand.
00:27:03That way, when I revealed the change,
00:27:05that the coin had changed from silver to copper
00:27:07and from copper back into silver,
00:27:09I was left with the copper coin finger-palmed in the right hand,
00:27:13which is exactly the position you need for the next change,
00:27:16which is a beautiful, visible change.
00:27:19And I wish I could point to the originator.
00:27:21It's a very, very old move.
00:27:23It's been floating around for years.
00:27:24I do have a nice touch on it
00:27:26that makes it a little bit cleaner
00:27:28and a little bit more deceptive.
00:27:31Let me show you the slight.
00:27:32Copper coin finger-palmed in the right hand.
00:27:36The silk is shown on both sides,
00:27:38thrown over the right palm.
00:27:41The half dollar is placed on the palm.
00:27:44There's the finger-palmed copper coin.
00:27:46Here is the silver coin.
00:27:48Now, something very, very nice happens.
00:27:51You give the coin to the spectator to examine
00:27:53just for a moment.
00:27:54You say, is that a real silver coin?
00:27:56What you want to do is pick up the copper coin
00:27:59right through the silk without any fumbling
00:28:02to pick up the coin and the silk together.
00:28:05Now, you can try to pick it up directly
00:28:07right off of the flat finger-palm,
00:28:09but sometimes a little fumbling will occur.
00:28:12So do this.
00:28:13It's a very nice touch.
00:28:14Under cover of the silk, clip the coin like that.
00:28:17Simply lift up the index finger, clip the coin.
00:28:20This is done under cover of the silk.
00:28:22Can't be seen.
00:28:23But that's the edge of the coin
00:28:24sticking up right there.
00:28:26So you can grab it without losing a second.
00:28:28You flip the silk over.
00:28:30Let me do that again.
00:28:31You're in this position.
00:28:34This was on your right palm.
00:28:36You hand the coin to the spectator
00:28:38to examine briefly.
00:28:39The copper coin is clipped,
00:28:41so it stands up like that.
00:28:43That's a little rough touch.
00:28:44Makes the whole move a lot easier.
00:28:47Grab the silk and the coin together.
00:28:50Throw the silk over your left hand.
00:28:53The coin is now in a little well
00:28:56that you created behind the left fingers
00:28:59with the left thumb holding it in place.
00:29:03Take the coin back from the spectator.
00:29:05Place it on top.
00:29:07The edge of the silver coin is touching
00:29:09the edge of the copper coin,
00:29:10but of course, you don't want any sound to be heard.
00:29:13You're now going to do a beautiful visual change.
00:29:17The right hand takes the rear corner of the silk.
00:29:20You're going to move the right hand forward
00:29:22covering the silk and the silver coin like this.
00:29:26And as you do this,
00:29:27you're going to allow the silver coin
00:29:29to fall onto the right fingers.
00:29:32The right hand continues forward.
00:29:34The right hand continues back.
00:29:36And you have an instantaneous visual change.
00:29:39Let me do this for you again.
00:29:41The copper coin is in the little well.
00:29:44You grab the corner of the silk handkerchief.
00:29:46You move the silk over the half a dollar
00:29:49forward toward the spectator.
00:29:51You allow the coin to fall onto the right fingertips.
00:29:55And at the same time,
00:29:56you push the copper coin up into view.
00:29:59So as soon as you pull the handkerchief back,
00:30:01the copper coin is revealed.
00:30:03And you'll notice that in this position,
00:30:05you're in the perfect position
00:30:07to allow that silver coin to be dropped
00:30:10once again into the breast pocket.
00:30:13It's an absolutely natural move.
00:30:15The misdirection is awesome
00:30:16because of the visual change.
00:30:18You went clean.
00:30:20You've done three very clean changes in a row.
00:30:22The last change is a real beauty.
00:30:24And that's the color-changing coin.
00:30:28Kareen, I'd like to show you a true classic of coin magic
00:30:32with this silk handkerchief,
00:30:34that silver half dollar,
00:30:36and this beautiful gold ring.
00:30:38Now, what I'm going to do
00:30:40is take the half a dollar
00:30:41and cover it with the silk handkerchief.
00:30:43And I know you might be a little bit suspicious,
00:30:45so let me show you.
00:30:46It is absolutely inside.
00:30:48Now I'm going to twist up the ends,
00:30:50totally securing the coin
00:30:52with the silver handkerchief.
00:30:54Twist up the ends,
00:30:56totally securing the coin inside.
00:30:58And I'd like you to hold that coin for a moment.
00:31:00Don't let go.
00:31:01Hold it tight because what I want to do
00:31:03is put the four ends of the silk handkerchief
00:31:06through the ring,
00:31:07bring it right up to the coin.
00:31:08You can let go now
00:31:09because you can see there is absolutely no way
00:31:12to get that ring over the coin.
00:31:15The coin is simply bigger than the ring.
00:31:17As a matter of fact,
00:31:19if you hold the ends,
00:31:20you will see that the only way
00:31:23to get the ring over the coin
00:31:25or to get the ring off the handkerchief
00:31:28would be to get the coin out first.
00:31:30So let me just cover it like this
00:31:32and you can see that there is the coin
00:31:34and there is the ring
00:31:36and that's the coin, the ring, and the handkerchief.
00:31:50The coin through ring effect
00:31:51is a classic effect with coins and handkerchiefs.
00:31:54The ring can be borrowed or it can be your own.
00:31:57The coin is usually a half a dollar
00:31:59because you want to make sure
00:32:00that the coin is big enough
00:32:01to not be able to fit through the ring.
00:32:04This trick was originally done
00:32:06or can be done with trick coins.
00:32:08Folding coins used to be used to do this trick.
00:32:11Fortunately, it can be done much more convincingly
00:32:13using real coins
00:32:14but a trick fold in the handkerchief.
00:32:17The fold that I'm talking about
00:32:18is the one that I taught,
00:32:19the classic coin fold.
00:32:21This will be the one with the full fold,
00:32:23the twist and not the pinch.
00:32:25By that I mean you hold the coin at the fingertips,
00:32:28cover it with a handkerchief
00:32:29so it lies right about the center.
00:32:31Once again, use the natural creases as a guideline.
00:32:34Where they cross is the center of the handkerchief.
00:32:36You're not going to be doing the pinch method.
00:32:38You're going to be grabbing the coin through the silk
00:32:41with the right fingers,
00:32:42giving it a full twist,
00:32:43re-gripping it with the left hand
00:32:45so the right hand can come forward,
00:32:48show the spectator one last look at the coin
00:32:50and either take both pieces of silk forward
00:32:53or simply flip both pieces of the silk forward.
00:32:56This creates a full fold over the coin on both sides
00:33:00so that by wrapping the coin up,
00:33:02again, don't forget to place
00:33:03the first and third fingers on the edges,
00:33:06twisting the silk,
00:33:07the coin can be shown convincingly on both sides.
00:33:10Ask the spectator to hold the coin for a moment.
00:33:13Would you please hold the coin tightly?
00:33:15With the coin wrapped up like this,
00:33:16there is no danger of them feeling the coin
00:33:18or the coin coming out of the fold prematurely.
00:33:21By letting them hold the coin,
00:33:23I can now take the ends
00:33:24and push them through the ring
00:33:27and bring the ring down up close
00:33:29right against the coin.
00:33:30You can let go now.
00:33:31And in this position,
00:33:33it can be displayed.
00:33:34The coin is securely wrapped up.
00:33:35Actually, the trick fold is on this side of the handkerchief.
00:33:39But both sides look good.
00:33:40It's obvious that the coin cannot go through the ring.
00:33:42It's too big.
00:33:44Give the ends to the spectator to hold.
00:33:46Announce that in order to get the ring off the handkerchief,
00:33:49you have to get the coin out first.
00:33:52So I am feeling underneath
00:33:54to feel that opening in the handkerchief.
00:33:56And there it is.
00:33:57This, of course, is facing down.
00:33:59Once you feel it,
00:34:00two things happen.
00:34:02The left hand comes over
00:34:04and makes a fist around the ring and the coin.
00:34:07This allows you, under cover of the left hand,
00:34:10to remove the coin
00:34:12from the trick pocket that you've created.
00:34:15This is covered by the fist.
00:34:17Squeeze it so that the ring doesn't make a premature appearance.
00:34:20Bring out the coin first.
00:34:22Then slide the ring off
00:34:24and show the coin in one hand,
00:34:25the ring in the other.
00:34:26Take the handkerchief,
00:34:27showing that it is undamaged
00:34:29because, remember, that coin was inside the handkerchief.
00:34:32So you have to show that the handkerchief is unscathed.
00:34:35And that is a very clean,
00:34:37single, one-spectator version
00:34:39of the coin through the ring.
00:34:46Coreen, Adam,
00:34:48I'd like to show you both
00:34:49a beautiful piece of magic
00:34:50with this silk handkerchief,
00:34:52that silver half-dollar,
00:34:53and that beautiful gold ring.
00:34:55What I'm going to do
00:34:56is place the coin
00:34:57within the center of the handkerchief.
00:34:59And I'll even give you one last look
00:35:00because I know you are slightly suspicious
00:35:02knowing that this is a magic instructional tape.
00:35:05Nevertheless, I will wrap it securely inside.
00:35:07I'd like you to hold that coin momentarily.
00:35:09Hold it tight
00:35:10because what I want to do
00:35:11is to push the end of the coin
00:35:13What I want to do
00:35:14is to push the ends of the silk
00:35:16right through that gold ring
00:35:18so I can bring it up close.
00:35:20And you can see
00:35:21there's absolutely no way
00:35:22to get that ring over the coin
00:35:24because the coin is obviously bigger than the ring.
00:35:26That's a very, very safe statement.
00:35:28As a matter of fact,
00:35:29I'm going to lay it on the table like this.
00:35:31I'd like you to grab the corners.
00:35:32Both of you grab the corners.
00:35:33Lift it up off the table.
00:35:35Now, there's no way
00:35:36that I can get the ring over the coin.
00:35:38But what I can attempt to do
00:35:39is to get the coin to shrink.
00:35:42Shrink.
00:35:43Momentarily.
00:35:44Just momentarily?
00:35:45Just momentarily.
00:35:46You'll see what I mean in a moment.
00:35:48And what I want to do
00:35:49Now, keep it out.
00:35:50Keep the corners there.
00:35:51Don't let go.
00:35:52Because what I want to do
00:35:53is sort of expand the very fibers.
00:35:55Widen the weave of the handkerchief.
00:35:58And sure enough,
00:35:59there comes the coin.
00:36:00Just a little bit smaller.
00:36:02There it is.
00:36:03And naturally,
00:36:04that leaves the ring free.
00:36:07Perfect.
00:36:08The coin, the ring, and the handkerchief.
00:36:10That's great.
00:36:12Here is an alternative way
00:36:13of doing the coin-through-ring effect
00:36:15that uses two spectators
00:36:17and so makes the trick play a lot bigger
00:36:19than the one-spectator version.
00:36:21In fact, using this method,
00:36:22the trick is even suitable for a platform,
00:36:24even possibly a stage performance.
00:36:26The effect is the same.
00:36:28Handkerchief is shown.
00:36:29The coin is shown.
00:36:30The handkerchief is thrown over the coin.
00:36:32Get the coin to lay right about
00:36:33in the center of the handkerchief.
00:36:35The coin is thrown over the coin.
00:36:37The handkerchief is thrown over the coin.
00:36:39The coin is thrown over the coin.
00:36:41Right about in the center of the handkerchief.
00:36:43Use the creases as a guide.
00:36:45Again, you're not going to do the pinch.
00:36:47You're going to do the full twist of the coin.
00:36:51Bring back the front edge so you can show it.
00:36:53There it is.
00:36:55Bring back both edges back over the coin
00:36:57so the coin is actually behind this fold.
00:37:01Once again,
00:37:02grip the edges of the coin
00:37:03with the first and third fingers
00:37:04so the fold won't slip.
00:37:06Twist the handkerchief several times.
00:37:08It can't be seen because of the full fold.
00:37:10Adam, would you hold that for just a moment?
00:37:13So I can thread the ends of the silk
00:37:15through the ring
00:37:17and bring the ring up flush against the coin.
00:37:19You can let go now.
00:37:20Thanks a lot.
00:37:21In this position,
00:37:22the coin appears to be securely tied up,
00:37:24but it's actually in a little bag
00:37:26created by that fake pocket.
00:37:28Now, at this point,
00:37:29what you want to do is
00:37:31what I actually performed on the tape
00:37:34is I displayed the handkerchief in this position
00:37:39and had the spectators hold
00:37:41these two corners and these two corners
00:37:43so that the coin and the ring
00:37:45are actually underneath.
00:37:47Maybe we can tilt up
00:37:48and give them a quick shot of the situation.
00:37:50The coin is there with the ring around it,
00:37:52and, of course,
00:37:53the ring is trapping the coin.
00:37:55Lower it back down again.
00:37:57I bring both hands underneath the handkerchief
00:38:00and I explain that
00:38:01the idea is not to get the ring over the coin,
00:38:04but to get the coin to shrink momentarily
00:38:06so it can pass through the ring.
00:38:08What I'm doing underneath
00:38:10is simply opening up the little pocket.
00:38:13It's very easy to find with your fingertips.
00:38:15Taking out the half a dollar.
00:38:17Now, when I take out the half a dollar,
00:38:19I want to continue to hold on
00:38:21to the little bag that I have formed
00:38:23because I don't want this puckered-up situation
00:38:26to disappear.
00:38:27A little slack, gentlemen?
00:38:28Just a little bit?
00:38:29Too much?
00:38:30Fine.
00:38:31Now, what I do is
00:38:32I remove the coin
00:38:33and I palm it.
00:38:34Classic palm.
00:38:35My left fingers are keeping
00:38:37the handkerchief bunched together like this.
00:38:39Of course, the ring is free.
00:38:41The ring is already in my left hand.
00:38:43Finger palm the ring.
00:38:45The left fingers are keeping
00:38:46the handkerchief bunched together.
00:38:48The right hand comes out
00:38:49from under the handkerchief.
00:38:50A little slack, gentlemen?
00:38:51Just that's enough?
00:38:52The coin is classic palmed.
00:38:54As you straighten out the silk
00:38:56and continually remind them
00:38:58not to let go of the corners,
00:39:00I'm going to drop the classic palm coin
00:39:02into that little well
00:39:04and kite it with my fingers.
00:39:06I keep on admonishing them
00:39:08to hold the handkerchief
00:39:09and now I explain
00:39:10that the coin is going to shrink
00:39:12ever so slightly
00:39:13so it can come up
00:39:14right through the ring.
00:39:15We do tighten up slightly
00:39:17and sure enough
00:39:18that coin comes right into view.
00:39:20It's a perfect illusion
00:39:21of it coming up through the ring
00:39:23and then the finish is
00:39:24the left hand comes out
00:39:25with the ring,
00:39:26dropping it on the handkerchief.
00:39:28Everything can be examined.
00:39:30The coin through the ring.
00:39:33Music
00:39:40Still another way
00:39:41to do the coin through the ring effect
00:39:42which has a slightly different look to it
00:39:44is to start once again
00:39:46with the coin.
00:39:47Cover it up with the silk handkerchief
00:39:49right about the center.
00:39:51Do your full twist.
00:39:52Don't forget to do the twist.
00:39:55Take the front edge of the handkerchief.
00:39:57One last look.
00:39:58Both edges go back over the coin.
00:40:01The handkerchief is twisted.
00:40:03Would you please hold the coin
00:40:04for a moment?
00:40:05Thanks a lot.
00:40:07The ends are pushed through.
00:40:08So far it's identical
00:40:09to the previous methods.
00:40:12Except this time
00:40:15it is laid out
00:40:16with the coin in the ring
00:40:17above the handkerchief
00:40:18instead of underneath.
00:40:19Once again,
00:40:20would you gentlemen hold the corners?
00:40:21Thank you very much.
00:40:22The idea is the same.
00:40:23The coin is going to come
00:40:24up through that pocket,
00:40:26up through the secret pocket
00:40:27under cover of the left hand.
00:40:29A little tension please.
00:40:30And when that happens
00:40:31the effect is automatic.
00:40:32When I take my hands away
00:40:34you're left with a mystifying
00:40:35and impossible situation.
00:40:37Both coins above the handkerchief.
00:40:39Slight variation.
00:40:40You may choose one or the other.
00:40:42Take your pick.
00:40:51Corinne,
00:40:52I'll show you a wonderful
00:40:53piece of magic
00:40:54with this silk handkerchief
00:40:55and this silver half dollar.
00:40:57Watch me like a hawk.
00:40:58The coin goes into
00:40:59the silk handkerchief.
00:41:00You can see
00:41:01there's nothing on my hand
00:41:02but I need your help.
00:41:03Would you hold your hand
00:41:04palm down
00:41:05and I'd like you to place it
00:41:06over the coin.
00:41:07Can you feel it?
00:41:08Yeah, I can.
00:41:09Press down just a little bit.
00:41:10That's enough.
00:41:11I think you did it.
00:41:12Lift your hand.
00:41:13That coin is gone
00:41:14and it has gone
00:41:15right through the silk
00:41:16and there it is,
00:41:17the coin through the silk.
00:41:29This is a different penetration
00:41:31of a coin through a handkerchief
00:41:33and it uses the retention
00:41:34of vision vanish
00:41:36which is taught in detail
00:41:37in Expert Coin Magic
00:41:38Made Easy Volume 2
00:41:40but besides being able
00:41:41to do it simply
00:41:42into the hand
00:41:43in the regular way
00:41:44you can also do it
00:41:45with the aid of a handkerchief
00:41:46and it's not only
00:41:47equally deceptive
00:41:48but allows you to do
00:41:49a very interesting
00:41:50visual penetration.
00:41:51The handkerchief is draped
00:41:52over the left hand.
00:41:53Once again,
00:41:54use the creases
00:41:55in the handkerchief
00:41:56as a reference
00:41:57and the creases
00:41:58in the center
00:41:59which you place
00:42:00over your left hand
00:42:01you're going to do
00:42:02the retention vanish
00:42:03exactly as written.
00:42:04There is no change
00:42:05in the technique
00:42:06whatsoever
00:42:07except that there's
00:42:08a handkerchief
00:42:09over the left hand.
00:42:10This actually
00:42:11will give you
00:42:12additional cover
00:42:13as you do the move.
00:42:14The move is the same.
00:42:15You'll be putting
00:42:16the coin into your hand
00:42:17closing the fingers
00:42:18and when they get
00:42:19to about this position
00:42:20the right fingers extend
00:42:21second and third fingers
00:42:22hook back the coin
00:42:23onto the fingertips
00:42:24as the left hand closes.
00:42:25Done with the correct timing
00:42:26and turning the coin
00:42:27at the right moment
00:42:28to catch the light
00:42:29in the room
00:42:30there's a wonderful burn
00:42:31of the coin
00:42:32going into the hand.
00:42:33Once again,
00:42:34the retention vanish
00:42:35with the silk handkerchief.
00:42:37Once the coin is on
00:42:38the fingertips
00:42:39you want to transfer
00:42:40to the classic palm position.
00:42:42Do this as you pick up
00:42:43the corner of the handkerchief.
00:42:45The coin gets palmed.
00:42:46At this moment
00:42:47the handkerchief
00:42:48is serving as a magic wand
00:42:49making the right hand
00:42:50look natural
00:42:51giving it something to do.
00:42:53Now the spectators believe
00:42:54there's a coin in your hand.
00:42:55You're going to move
00:42:56the handkerchief forward
00:42:57keeping your thumb
00:42:58apparently on the coin
00:42:59so that you can reveal
00:43:00that there is nothing
00:43:01on your left palm.
00:43:03That's the reason
00:43:04for moving the handkerchief
00:43:05forward.
00:43:06As the right hand
00:43:07comes back
00:43:08you're going to drop
00:43:09the palmed half dollar
00:43:10into the left hand
00:43:13continue moving
00:43:14the handkerchief over it.
00:43:16Ask a spectator
00:43:17to hold out their hand
00:43:18palm down
00:43:20and you ask them
00:43:21to place it over the coin
00:43:23let their hand
00:43:24close to your hand
00:43:25because you're going
00:43:26to open up your fist
00:43:27and they can actually
00:43:28feel the coin
00:43:29on their fingertips
00:43:30which they will assume
00:43:31to be the coin
00:43:32under their fingertips
00:43:33not knowing that
00:43:34it's under the handkerchief
00:43:35as well.
00:43:36Ask them to press down
00:43:37slightly
00:43:38say that's enough
00:43:39they lift their hand
00:43:40the coin is gone
00:43:42you explain that
00:43:43it's gone through
00:43:44the handkerchief
00:43:45move the handkerchief away
00:43:46revealing the penetration
00:43:47the coin is on the palm.
00:43:49It's a lovely little sequence
00:43:50and it shows how you can
00:43:51use the retention pass
00:43:52with a handkerchief
00:43:53for a magical effect as well.
00:43:58An important point
00:43:59don't forget
00:44:00when you place
00:44:01the spectator's hand
00:44:02over the coin
00:44:03as you open your fist
00:44:04make sure that the coin
00:44:05is underneath
00:44:06their fingertips
00:44:08the extreme fingertips
00:44:09the last inch and a half
00:44:10or so of the fingers
00:44:11that way they get
00:44:12a very good impression
00:44:13a tactile impression
00:44:14of the coin
00:44:15under their fingers
00:44:16when it's actually
00:44:17under the silk as well.
00:44:18They press down
00:44:19the hand is moved away
00:44:20the coin is gone
00:44:21and the penetration
00:44:22is revealed.
00:44:31Corrine, how are you?
00:44:32I'm doing good.
00:44:33Would you like to see
00:44:34another miracle
00:44:35with a handkerchief
00:44:36and a half a dollar?
00:44:37I will place
00:44:38this silver half dollar
00:44:39directly in the center
00:44:40of the handkerchief
00:44:41no question about it.
00:44:42No question.
00:44:43This is done
00:44:44in slow motion
00:44:45this corner gets
00:44:46moved over to there
00:44:48very slow
00:44:49very fair
00:44:50this corner
00:44:51gets moved over
00:44:52to here
00:44:53very slow
00:44:54very fair
00:44:55in fact
00:44:56let me show you
00:44:57you can hear
00:44:58the coin
00:44:59inside
00:45:00there's no question
00:45:01about it
00:45:02no question
00:45:03and yet
00:45:04it's gone
00:45:05it's that simple
00:45:06that coin
00:45:07is totally gone
00:45:08oh my gosh
00:45:09but it doesn't go far
00:45:10you must have
00:45:11a cashier.
00:45:22This is the
00:45:23Novel Coin Vanish
00:45:24that's its title
00:45:25in an old book
00:45:26and when I read
00:45:27that the professor
00:45:28Dye Vernon
00:45:29was very interested
00:45:30in this move
00:45:31I decided to put it
00:45:32on this tape
00:45:33it's a perfect example
00:45:34of something
00:45:35that can be
00:45:36very very simple
00:45:37and yet very effective
00:45:38as well.
00:45:39Start with the
00:45:40handkerchief
00:45:41spread out
00:45:42in front of you
00:45:43like this
00:45:44the corner is facing
00:45:45toward you
00:45:46this way
00:45:47and this way
00:45:48show a half a dollar
00:45:49place it in the center
00:45:50of the handkerchief
00:45:51follow this correctly
00:45:52because the folds
00:45:53are very very important
00:45:54they're not difficult
00:45:55but they have to be
00:45:56made accurately
00:45:57first bring this
00:45:58corner forward
00:45:59until it touches
00:46:00the forward corner
00:46:01at this point
00:46:02the coin is right
00:46:03over here
00:46:04next bring
00:46:05the corner on my
00:46:06right
00:46:07over to the corner
00:46:08on my left
00:46:09the coin is still
00:46:10over here
00:46:11right down at the
00:46:12bottom
00:46:13you want to pick up
00:46:14these two corners
00:46:15this way
00:46:16one corner between
00:46:17the second finger
00:46:18and the index finger
00:46:19and this corner
00:46:20between the thumb
00:46:21on the index finger
00:46:22and the other corner
00:46:23you can pick up
00:46:24the same way
00:46:25clipping it like this
00:46:26but the separate
00:46:27corners are over here
00:46:28these corners are
00:46:29together
00:46:30at this point
00:46:31the coin can be
00:46:32tapped on a plate
00:46:33or a cup
00:46:34and you can
00:46:35absolutely hear it
00:46:36inside
00:46:37all you have to do
00:46:38is bring the hands
00:46:39toward each other
00:46:40and take this
00:46:41corner
00:46:42with these fingers
00:46:43and you're going to
00:46:44drop this corner
00:46:45that the right fingers
00:46:46are holding
00:46:47it may sound
00:46:48like a lot
00:46:49but really
00:46:50all you're doing
00:46:51is picking up
00:46:52this corner
00:46:53releasing these
00:46:54open out the
00:46:55handkerchief
00:46:56where is the coin
00:46:57the coin
00:46:58is in a fold
00:46:59that has been
00:47:00created
00:47:01as I pulled
00:47:02the ends apart
00:47:03this fold
00:47:04is what traps
00:47:05the coin
00:47:06it's right there
00:47:07and yet
00:47:08from your side
00:47:09you can't see the
00:47:10fold
00:47:11it simply looks
00:47:12like the handkerchief
00:47:13has been pulled out
00:47:14and it's hanging
00:47:15straight down
00:47:16this is extremely
00:47:17difficult
00:47:18but
00:47:19at this point
00:47:20how do you
00:47:21recover the coin
00:47:22one way
00:47:23is to look at
00:47:24this corner
00:47:25and allow the coin
00:47:26to roll down
00:47:27to this end of
00:47:28the handkerchief
00:47:29and fall into
00:47:30your fingers
00:47:31nothing wrong
00:47:32with that
00:47:33perfectly acceptable
00:47:34you can produce
00:47:35the coin
00:47:36or you can
00:47:37leave the coin
00:47:38in a vanished
00:47:39state
00:47:40magicians have
00:47:41argued
00:47:42or discussed
00:47:43for many years
00:47:44which is more
00:47:45effective
00:47:46if you vanish
00:47:47an object
00:47:48as soon as
00:47:49the object
00:47:50is produced
00:47:51the effect
00:47:52is over
00:47:53but if you
00:47:54vanish an object
00:47:55and don't bring it
00:47:56back
00:47:57the effect
00:47:58sort of goes
00:47:59on forever
00:48:00that's why
00:48:01the vanish
00:48:02of a lighted
00:48:03cigarette
00:48:04in your fist
00:48:05is so effective
00:48:06to a non-magician
00:48:07because even a
00:48:08child knows
00:48:09the difficulty
00:48:10they can sense
00:48:11the difficulty
00:48:12of retaining
00:48:13hiding a lighted
00:48:14cigarette
00:48:15in their fist
00:48:16I will leave
00:48:17this up to you
00:48:18if you want to
00:48:19bring the coin
00:48:20back
00:48:21you can get it
00:48:22in your right hand
00:48:23reproduce it
00:48:24any way you want
00:48:25use one of the
00:48:26handkerchief
00:48:27production moves
00:48:28I've already
00:48:29taught you
00:48:30or you can
00:48:31leave the coin
00:48:32in the center
00:48:33of the handkerchief
00:48:34wrap it up
00:48:35rope fashion
00:48:36tie the handkerchief
00:48:37into a knot
00:48:38the coin
00:48:39would then
00:48:40appear in the
00:48:41knot
00:48:42that's an
00:48:43old time tested
00:48:44let me do the
00:48:45novel coin vanish
00:48:46for you
00:48:47up to speed
00:48:48the handkerchief
00:48:49is laid out
00:48:50that's one
00:48:51that's two
00:48:54you can see
00:48:55the form
00:48:56you can hear it
00:48:57inside
00:48:58and yet it's gone
00:48:59gone without a
00:49:00trace
00:49:01is it there
00:49:02is it here
00:49:03no
00:49:04it's right over there
