00:00A shift in the pound-for-pound rankings coming out of UFC 315 plus WWE hits all the right notes on the Raw After Backlash.
00:08Couch Potato Diary Live starts right now.
00:20Welcome everyone to Couch Potato Diary. My name is Peter Klein. Thank you very much for hanging out today.
00:26The live part again, a little bit not accurate. We'll be back to the live streams hopefully next week.
00:32So today, like I mentioned before, we're going to be looking at the pound-for-pound rankings changes in the UFC, both men's and women's sides, after UFC 315 in Montreal.
00:43And we'll be looking at WWE Raw following Backlash.
00:48As always, Couch Potato Diary presented by Sea of Dead. Check out seaofdead403.ca.
00:52I've been telling you guys we've got new stuff coming. The new stuff is here.
00:56So check out the website, seaofdead403.ca.
00:59Also, head over to swiftenergy.gg. Use the code PKPRIMETIME for 25% off.
01:05They've got some great drinks that'll help you get through the day, energy-wise.
01:08So, let's dive right in, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship had another pay-per-view over the weekend,
01:14which means that we're going to have some shifts in the pound-for-pound rankings, and we have a couple big ones, actually.
01:19So let's dive right into it.
01:26UFC 315 went down in Montreal, and with that, we have a new welterweight champion,
01:43which probably means we have some changes to the ratings, or the rankings, sorry.
01:49So here are the new pound-for-pound rankings for UFC, coming out of UFC 315.
01:54We will start at number 10.
01:56And actually, I haven't updated these in a little bit.
01:58So, Magomen Onkalaev makes his debut in the top 10, coming off of the massive win over Alex Pereira.
02:06And I just, again, Pereira is someone who is, like, has an all-time resume already.
02:14And we've talked about how much appreciation I have for what he has done.
02:18And so, I just, you have to, you have to reward someone who beat them.
02:22So, Onkalaev gets on the list here at number 10.
02:25At 9, it is Pantoja.
02:27He sticks around in that number 9 slot.
02:30And probably a little bit underrated, but it is just, you don't have a lot of other pound-for-pound greats in his area right now,
02:37or in his weight class.
02:38And so, that's a little bit difficult for him to move up.
02:41At number 8, it is Murav Devalishvili.
02:43At 7, it is Paheya, who, even with the loss to Onkalaev, I still don't think you can take away what Poetan has done.
02:50And everything from wins over guys who were high up in the pound-for-pound rankings at the time,
02:56and now multiple championships and all those things,
03:02I still think you have to keep him up on this list, and over Onkalaev right now.
03:07At 6, it is Jon Jones.
03:09We've got to get this thing going soon, though.
03:11At 5, Alex Volkanovski gets back up there after getting back into the championship picture in the UFC.
03:17At 4, it is Tom Aspinall.
03:19Again, it does feel weird to have the interim champion ahead of the heavyweight champion,
03:24but Aspinall, maybe we aren't looking at a whole lot of pound-for-pound greats that he is running through,
03:29but the dominance that he has shown at the highest level of the heavyweight division,
03:33I just, I had to put him up higher on this list.
03:36So, he gets the spot at number 4.
03:38At 3, it is Drikus Duplassi.
03:41At 2, it is Ilya Teporia, who probably had a shot of making the number 1 spot.
03:46If things on Saturday didn't go the way they did, he may have to wait for that now.
03:50And number 1, it is Islam Makashev.
03:53So, a couple of names you didn't hear.
03:55Bilal Mohamed is off of the list.
03:57It's a tough loss against Jack Della Maddalena.
03:59I just think he has to come off of it,
04:01because he does not have the amount of high-level wins that are required,
04:06I think, to keep you on while not being a champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
04:10So, I had to take him off of there.
04:12And Jack Della Maddalena doesn't crack the top 10 for me.
04:15It's a major win, and it's weird to not have a champion in the pound-for-pound top 10 rankings right now.
04:20But, I just, again, biggest win of his career.
04:23I just don't think he has the full resume yet to get into the pound-for-pound top 10 conversation.
04:29So, the two fighters in the welterweight title fight,
04:32neither of them making the updated pound-for-pound rankings.
04:36So, that is it on the men's side.
04:38What about the women's side?
04:39We have some more changes going to that one coming off of UFC 315.
04:45So, after UFC 315, one of the all-time pound-for-pound greats is still the champion,
05:01Valentina Shevchenko, with the win.
05:03That, and her spot on the rankings, probably not going to change.
05:06But, we do have a couple other alterations that have been made over the last couple of months.
05:10So, let's roll through them.
05:11At number 10, debuting on the top 10, Natalya Silva.
05:15Coming off of a dominant win against a former champion,
05:18I think really does show how good she is, and how good she can be.
05:22And so, there is a little bit of projecting in this ranking.
05:25And, I do think that there is a little bit of me just assuming what she can be by putting her on this top 10 list.
05:31But, I just think the world of the talents that we saw from her on Saturday against Alexa Grosso,
05:37and it's a big win against a former champion, and someone who was on this list.
05:40At number 9, Tatiana Suarez.
05:42Coming off of the first setback of her career,
05:44I still think that she has the high-quality resume to deserve a spot in the top 10.
05:51At number 8, it is Rose Namajunas.
05:54Again, we've had a couple of stumbles, but I just think that this is a little bit more of a legacy one,
05:58and I still think you have to have Rose in your top 10.
06:01Aaron Blanchfield comes in at number 7.
06:03And, does have a bit of a setback, but has bounced back from that,
06:07and now has a massive fight coming up at the end of the month against Macy Barber.
06:10And, it's an opportunity for her to, I think, really cement her place as one of the greats in the sport right now.
06:18I think she is that good.
06:19I think she is that talented.
06:20And, I still think she has the resume to deserve a spot in the top 10.
06:24So, she is at number 7.
06:25At 6, it's Manon Fioro, who does drop a couple of spots coming off of a loss.
06:30I think she hung with Valentina Shevchenko.
06:32I think she showed up really, really well.
06:34And, so, because of that, I think that she is still deserving of being on this list.
06:39So, Fioro sticks around just outside the top 5.
06:42At 5, it is the next title challenger in Kayla Harrison.
06:47She gets the spot at number 5.
06:49A lot of it is outside of the UFC and the dominance that she showed.
06:53But, she is showing that now in the Ultimate Fighting Championship as well.
06:56And, so, because of that, I think you have to give her a spot here.
06:59At 4, Yan Xiaonan, who, again, has had some setbacks, but has shown to be a high-level fighter.
07:06And, so, probably a little high.
07:07Just kind of going through this now, that might be a bit of a higher ranking for her.
07:11But, I still think that she is that talented of a fighter that she is deserving of that spot.
07:15At 3, it is Juliana Pena.
07:18I do not like the kind of character that she is trying to portray in this heel version and everything like that.
07:26Like, she's just, she's kind of bad at it.
07:28But, she is a good fighter and has a lot of high-level qualities as a champion right now.
07:33So, she comes in at number 3.
07:35At 2, it is Zhang Weili.
07:37Again, just one of the best fighters in the world.
07:39And, I think a lot of, I think a lot of her is a fighter.
07:44And, I think there are maybe a few times in the sport that she would be number 1.
07:48But, right now, it is Valentina Shevchenko, who is just on another level.
07:52It's another high-level win for her.
07:54A fun one at that.
07:56There is a clear number 1 in the women's pound-for-pound rankings right now.
08:00And, that is Valentina Shevchenko.
08:02So, at the bottom, Natalya Silva is the new addition to the list.
08:07That does mean someone has to come off.
08:08And, that someone was Alexa Grosso.
08:10It is two underwhelming performances in a row that offsets the one big win she had over Shevchenko.
08:16So, it is weird to have someone who beat the number 1 pound-for-pound fighter on the list not be on the list.
08:22But, it has been so underwhelming the last couple of fights that I just, I cannot put her as one of the top 10 female fighters in the sport.
08:30Or, in the UFC, anyway, right now.
08:32So, that is the updated pound-for-pound rankings coming out of UFC 315.
08:37Let's move over to the WWE as they are looking to build some momentum coming off of Backlash.
08:43And, I would say they certainly delivered on that.
08:46Let's go over what happened on Monday Night Raw.
08:49Wrong one.
08:52WWE Monday Night Raw going down after Backlash.
09:00And, I, like, we'll run through it here, sorry.
09:04I think this was a home run.
09:05I think they did a phenomenal job of, um, kind of building up a number of different things.
09:10And, really building up some momentum in this.
09:13Um, I think they set up the Rollins, Punk, all of that stuff very, very well.
09:18I think the pro, sorry, the promos with everyone involved were excellent.
09:22Uh, the brawls, the beatdown in the back.
09:24I think it's, I, I think it's hitting all the right notes.
09:27The one thing that I'm not loving about a lot of the talk around the, the Rollins group right now is everyone's like, oh, you know what?
09:34Yep, it's the next evolution.
09:35Yeah, it's, it's Paul Heyman, Ric Flair, um, Seth Rollins, Triple H, uh, that they have their Batista now.
09:41So, now we're just looking for Randy Orton.
09:43Oh, it has to be Austin Theory.
09:44And, I just, I, I, I don't think we need to do that beat by beat, you know?
09:50I, I think you can have your own group in your own way.
09:53I, I, I know that there can be a lot of things wrong with the internet wrestling community.
09:58This is one thing we do a lot, is we see something that is kind of similar, and it's like, oh, well, we have to go with this now.
10:04And it's like, well, you have to hit beat by beat everything that was in this group.
10:07It has to be this, it has to be a this, it has to be a this.
10:08Um, we do this with storylines, too.
10:11Like, for a long time, the best way to introduce someone in the internet wrestling community's minds was,
10:17okay, you have this guy come out, and you have him cut a promo, and say that he's beat everybody,
10:22and there's nothing left for him to do, and then the music hits, and oh my god, it's this guy,
10:27and now he has something left to do.
10:29Which is, it's a great way of introducing someone.
10:32Like Goldberg, when they introduced Goldberg, in that exact way.
10:36But it was the example everyone used always, when there was a new whatever coming into the company.
10:42Um, Brock Lesnar coming back, or, uh, you name your, whoever you want.
10:48It was always a, oh, well, it's that.
10:49Let's go with that one.
10:50And now recently, um, everyone wants the WrestleMania main event to be the WrestleMania 40 main event, right?
10:58Like, how many times were you thinking, and look, I got caught up in it, too.
11:01Where it's, okay, it's gonna be Cena against Cody Rhodes,
11:04and, oh my god, out comes Travis Scott.
11:07But don't worry, it's Bad Bunny, or Sami Zayn, or whoever, coming out to save the day.
11:12Oh, but now the Rocks music hit.
11:14And sweet Jesus, it's Stone Cold Steve Austin who comes out.
11:17It's like, okay, yes, that would be awesome.
11:18And it was, when they did it at WrestleMania 40, with almost the exact same people.
11:22Uh, so, we can tend to fall into the, well, we have seen this before,
11:27and, oh, we can do a tribute act to this.
11:28Because, I don't, I don't think you need to shoehorn Austin Theory into this,
11:33because he is somewhat similar to what 2004 Randy Orton was,
11:37just because you kind of want to have Evolution back again.
11:41Do that in the video game.
11:43I don't, I don't think Austin Theory is ready for this sort of a thing.
11:47Quite frankly, I think if you put Austin Theory in this,
11:50it would be like if they would have put Mark Jindrak in the original Evolution.
11:53Austin Theory has a look, and he has a talent,
11:57but it has not been put together in any way, shape, or form.
12:01That leads me to believe that there could be something there
12:03to turn him into the next Randy Orton in this pretty important group on Monday Night Raw.
12:09Honestly, Grayson Waller would probably be a bit of a better fit
12:12if you could kind of tone down the goofy and kind of serious him up a little bit.
12:17I think he would be a better fit.
12:18But, I mean, look, there is going to be a lot of talk about who the third man is.
12:22Just probably not Mabel.
12:25Shout out the three people who get that joke.
12:27But, I just, I would want to caution against just putting someone in there
12:32because it fits this one group that we all really liked
12:35that this is somewhat similar to.
12:37I don't think Paul Heyman's winning the tag team titles either.
12:40Just putting that out there.
12:41So, you know, just a little thing that I've noticed out on the chatter around this.
12:46Roxy and Julia against Io and Rhea was a ton of fun.
12:50The match itself, I thought, was fantastic and a really, really good showcase.
12:53You don't love beating the young team so early,
12:56but I do think there is good value in just being in a very, very good matchup like this.
13:02And I thought, again, it was a great match and a really good showcase.
13:05One thing that I'm getting frustrated with,
13:06apparently this is just a segment of me bitching about the internet wrestling community,
13:10but you see a few people posting online.
13:13When Julia comes out, it is not a massive crowd reaction.
13:16And a lot of people pointing, oh, crowd reaction for Julia, not strong.
13:20Oh man, guess everyone was wrong about the hype around this girl.
13:24And it's like, look, no shit.
13:27Like, she has been on the main roster for three weeks.
13:29Let's chill.
13:30Like, people's excitement over, at least mine,
13:32my excitement for Julia wasn't, oh man, this girl is going to be super over right away.
13:36It is, no, this is one of the best wrestlers in the world.
13:39So, we're going to get to appreciate her now at a high level.
13:44And eventually those crowd reactions are going to be there.
13:46But just to assume that someone who, like, this is one of her first intro,
13:51like, first walk down the ring with music intros ever in WWE.
13:56And to assume, on the main roster.
13:58And so to assume that, oh, well, the crowd reaction is going to be insane.
14:01Oh, it wasn't?
14:02Failure of a character.
14:05Failure of a call-up.
14:06That's just, it's so dumb.
14:08And it is so, it's, if I went through it,
14:11it's probably a lot of people who are AEW fans trying to be defensive about things and stuff like that.
14:15But it is, it's really frustrating when you see that right away.
14:18It's, oh yeah, no, she's a bust.
14:19It's been two weeks.
14:21Let's chill a little bit, shall we?
14:24Elsewhere, Jay's promo, I thought was fantastic.
14:26Like, the crowd is so behind him right now.
14:29And then he calls out Logan Paul, does exactly what he needs to do to build up Saturday Night's main event.
14:33And then right after it, Gunther saying,
14:35I'm going to put you in your place.
14:36And Jay's like, no, no, no, no, no, I'm in my place.
14:38I thought that was, I thought that was excellent.
14:41I thought it was a great rebuttal from his character and exactly what it needed to be from Jay.
14:45Same thing with Becky Lynch coming off of a loss at Backlash.
14:49Becky Lynch with another just fantastic promo.
14:51I would have liked a little bit more Valkyria on this show coming off of the biggest win of her main roster time.
14:57But Becky proving on the show why she is one of the best ever.
15:00And we're all having fun with this El Grande-Americano thing.
15:06I think we need to take a step forward with it now.
15:08The Gable-Penta matchup was fantastic, but it's kind of the same story every week.
15:13And so I think we need a little bit of an evolution in this one before we can really get going into it.
15:22Because it's just, it is becoming very one-note.
15:25Like, oh, it's Chad Gable, oh, it's in a mask, and everyone knows what it is, and oh, he's putting some metal in there now.
15:29Which probably really hurts, but whatever.
15:32We need a little bit more advancement from this story now moving forward.
15:37So, those are my thoughts on what we saw from Monday Night Raw.
15:40Again, a really good show.
15:41And WWE building up some momentum coming off of what was a very, very good WWE Backlash.
15:46That's going to do it for the podcast today.
15:48Thank you so much for hanging out and tuning in.
