00:30Hello, my name is Matt and welcome to the Guildhall Complex.
00:40We're very close to St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London.
01:00Watch this part of the program and answer the question, what is the motto of the City of London?
01:21And this incredible building here in front of you is a very large medieval hall.
01:26There's been a hall here since the 12th century.
01:30But this building, as you can see, is very old indeed. It dates back from around 1411.
01:46So the porch you can see here dates back to the 18th century.
01:50But the entire building, you can see, is the only secular building within the City of London to survive
01:56both the Great Fire of London of 1666, and also the Blitz in the Second World War.
02:02Look at the symbol of the shields above the porch there. The shield has a cross of St George,
02:23and in the corner is the sword of St Paul. Underneath it is written Domine Dirige Nos,
02:29which means God Guide Us, which means God Guide Us. And that is the motto of the City of London.
02:45I'm going to tell you a little bit more about some of the other buildings around the Guildhall Complex.
02:50Now this is another section of the Guildhall Complex, and you can see this unusual shaped building behind me.
02:59It's called the Pepper Pot Building, and this is where the Court of Older Men meet.
03:03Behind the Pepper Pot Building, we have lots of offices, and it's in here where the guides,
03:18like myself, City of London guides, learn how to become guides in this wonderful part of London.
03:29What is the motto of the City of London?
03:34God Guide Us is the motto of the City of London.
03:46Watch the second part of the program and answer the question.
03:50How did St. Lawrence die?
04:03Now let me show you about this wonderful church here. This is St. Lawrence Jewry, and it is the official
04:15church of the City of London Corporation. It was built just after the Great Fire of London of 1666 by our
04:21most famous architect, a man called Sir Christopher Wren, who also built St. Paul's Cathedral.
04:35But have a look at some of the features here. If you look closely at the weather vane at the very top,
04:41you'll notice that it's in the symbol of a gridiron. Unfortunately, St. Lawrence, who the church is
04:46named after, was actually grilled alive on a gridiron or a grill, and that's the reason why that symbol is
04:53is on the top. So if you have an opportunity to go inside St. Lawrence Jewry, definitely worth
05:07seeing. But I'm going to go and find something else in this square.
05:10How did St. Lawrence die?
05:18He was grilled alive on a gridiron.
05:31Watch the next part of the program and answer the question. What was discovered during the building of
05:38the Art Gallery? The last building in the Guildhall complex is the Art Gallery, and here it is in
05:48front of you. And this was actually built in the 1980s, and it houses some really wonderful art,
05:55four and a half thousand paintings in its collection.
06:08So if you were to go downstairs in the Art Gallery, they've actually discovered during the building of
06:13this Art Gallery, the Roman Amphitheatre.
06:26Here we have four of the most distinguished and important people in the city of London's history.
06:31Firstly, we have Christopher Wren, the architect, the man who built St. Lawrence Jewry.
06:36Also we have William Shakespeare, the world-renowned playwright.
06:40Oliver Cromwell, the man who actually governed the country for 11 years when it became a republic in
06:46the 17th century. And finally, Samuel Pepys, the man who during the 1660s was the diarist who wrote about
06:54some of the biggest changes that took place in London's history.
06:57So quite an incredible place. But I hope you've enjoyed the Guildhall complex and found out some
07:20wonderful things about this very interesting location where very few tourists actually come.
07:26So until next time, thank you.
