00:00What we're going to do to the world, to the environment,
00:07it's not what we're going to do.
00:09The biggest problem now is water.
00:15You have to start looking at it as a resource.
00:21Sustainable fashion is like a breath.
00:24What is the second, third, fourth use of the same material?
00:27When you help, you don't have to stop.
00:32What we're going to do to the world, to the environment,
00:37it's what they're giving.
00:39And what we're going to do to the environment,
00:46what they're giving.
00:48Specifically, food, I recall not the best,
00:49that the chance to eat would be in the world,
00:51not the best, is it?
00:54What we brought back to the world and the environment,
00:59it was what it was given to us.
01:01And specifically for food,
01:03I can imagine that there should be no food for food.
01:09Because there are many families here in the Philippines.
01:17Anna Patricia Non, or Patreng, 29 years old,
01:21came from Quezon Sips.
01:24My inspiration when I started the community pantry during the pandemic
01:33was out of necessity, anger, frustration, and out of love.
01:42I also saw 4.14 million Filipinos unemployed.
01:47And when you tell me, how many families are affected.
01:54The community pantry PH is an initiative for mutual aid.
02:03The goal is to be available and accessible to our communities.
02:08What we're doing is to connect farmers to consumers.
02:20The community pantry PH.
02:21The community pantry PH.
02:22The community pantry PH.
02:23The community pantry PH.
02:27It was a rescue by people who are not buying.
02:31Or people who are not buying.
02:33Or people who are buying at high prices.
02:36So, our goal is to keep farmers the supply of farmers.
02:43We help them to sell their products.
02:47They will pay for the right.
02:49As a child.
02:50The point of time...
02:51The community pantry is a better community.
02:52Is it what we are getting into account for?
02:53The community pantry is a betterrá.
02:54The community pantry in the world.
02:56It is all about traditional products.
02:57The community pantry is a better place for the transportation.
02:58And when you do the,
02:59The community pantry is a better livelihood.
03:00The community pantry is a better place.
03:01So, when I was a kid, I really liked my hair.
03:11But other than that, I also helped my garment with my hands make a smoke smoke.
03:21Kio
03:51People can donate clothes that are not used for a long-term age.
03:57They can be ready to wear or become a product that has aesthetic value.
04:10Why are I very interested in sustainable fashion?
04:13Because actually the problem of the problem is not only the problem of our own, but we need collective awareness.
04:29In 2018, I had Stally with Andin Aisha.
04:34I wanted to make Stally become a tool to introduce sustainable fashion so that it is more inclusive.
04:42It is not only exclusive, but it can also be smooth and all the people are surrounded by sustainable fashion.
05:02Until now, humanity has thought about creating just single-use material.
05:07We have to think about what is the second, third, fourth use of the same material.
05:12And whether we can look at it differently and create something which was not looked upon as a possibility before.
05:19I am Sonali Phadke from Studio Alternatives and we work in the field of upcycling as well as various projects that we do with scrap.
05:29We want this to become a hub for designers, for young students to come and explore material.
05:45Let's say you buy something online or even from a shop.
05:48It comes with a set of instruction manuals and it comes with safety and how to use it and everything else.
05:54But there are no instructions on how to throw it or how to take it apart.
05:58We should go a step ahead when we make our products, whether we can also tell people how to disassemble it when you are done with it.
06:13So you take charge of what should happen to it and not just dump it somewhere.
06:27With upcycling, it's a lot of experimentation.
06:29We have conducted workshops.
06:31We do projects mostly for individuals or also corporates where the scrap form corporates we receive here.
06:37And we've done something with tires, we've done something with old furniture, we've refurbished things and put it back in spaces.
06:46Can scrap of one entity become an input to another entity?
06:51And can we work on such different models?
06:56For example, we needed like one meter pipes, metal pipes for a project.
07:00And the thing was that I had to buy bigger section of pipes in the market.
07:04We get 20 feet or 18 feet pipes.
07:07And I was talking to somebody we know, a nearby fabricator.
07:11And for him, that one meter pipe was waste because in his project, he could not have any joints.
07:16So suddenly, see, there is a lot of value that is there even economically.
07:22It makes sense for both parties.
07:25So with scrap also, can we have a platform where people are connected?
07:28And before it is even called as waste, it becomes a material that can be reutilized at that scale itself.
07:35So when I started in 2022, I did research on the journey from Jakarta, Sumba, Jakarta.
07:52And I found out that in Indonesia, the route of sustainable fashion is quite varied.
07:58That what is big Pixar kind?
08:00What is the request for?
08:01There are many palabas,
08:16and those that are various companies where people are engaged and focused on that.
08:20We work with the Dinas Tenaga Kerja Jakarta and also the Pernahit Permak in Jakarta Selatan.
08:34Then we have to provide them a good job,
08:39working with local brands,
08:43and even manufacturing fast fashion that has pre-waist,
08:50which is still post-consume,
08:52can be modified with us.
08:59We are not against fast fashion,
09:01but we provide solutions for fast fashion,
09:04and also we provide the experience of what needs,
09:09and what needs,
09:12and how they manage the farm,
09:15we can help everyone.
09:32Sahara and I both believe that since we are located in this village,
09:35in this community,
09:36let us say can we make a difference to the 5 km radius that we are already in.
09:51So we are coming up with a scrap library for schools especially.
09:54So from an very early age,
09:56we give a material library of say 25 material to start with.
10:00We will give tool sets that go with the scrap,
10:09and we have instructions on how to use the scrap to create something.
10:13It could be art and craft,
10:14it could be a part of your regular models that you do in schools,
10:18maybe a part of geography or other subjects that you are learning.
10:21So we feel as early as possible,
10:31we have to cut this notion that this is garbage.
10:34You have to start looking at it as a resource.
10:36Let's say for a book cover,
10:42why do you need to buy brown paper from the shop?
10:44Can you just maybe stitch the wrappers that you have from your chocolates or chips packets?
10:49Can you stitch it?
10:50Can you make a waterproof cover out of it?
10:53So we are saying we are salvaging material,
10:55and we are trying to work on it to increase the life of material.
10:58How do you do it?
10:59How do you work?
11:01It's a word you are talking about.
11:02I know that it's hard to acquire the grass,
11:03and you're getting right out there.
11:04Right.
11:05So it's not a type of material.
11:06It's one thing that I never kill in the swamp.
11:07But I know that there is a type of material.
11:08It's a type of material.
11:14I have an idea from the longest time here in the Philippines.
11:17that I know that it's hard to acquire the grass,
11:22you will blow up immediately,
11:24but it's not true.
11:25It's always easy to carry the grass here
11:27consumers ng kulay.
11:37Tapos, basta tungkol
11:40sa pagkain at paano magiging
11:42available, yun yung goal
11:43namin. Pwede rin disaster
11:45response, pwede rin
11:48community kitchens,
11:50iba at iba
11:51pang initiatives.
11:52Hindi siya solution talaga
11:58for hunger. Van aid
12:00solution siya, pero kailangan
12:01ilabas.
12:08Honestly,
12:10parang siyang miracle
12:11nung panahon na yun na
12:13nagsimula siya sa maliit na cart,
12:15tapos lumawak siya.
12:16So, yun, from one
12:22pantry, naging
12:246,700 community
12:25pantries nationwide.
12:30So, yung
12:31pantry, nag-work siya
12:33sa iba't ibang paraan.
12:35Pinaka-simple ay
12:37yung mga families,
12:39individuals,
12:41naghahatid sila ng pagkain sa pantry.
12:47Sa pantry, yun yung
12:48ginagawa namin.
12:49Sinisikap namin
12:50gumamit ng mga
12:52papers,
12:53boxes.
12:55Pero, sa totoo lang,
12:57pagka may nag-donate
12:58sa amin ng mga
12:59iba't ibang
12:59plastic,
13:00iba't ibang ano,
13:01hindi namin
13:02tinatanggihan.
13:04So, sa pantry,
13:05minimake sure na lang namin
13:06na
13:07ididispose natin
13:08ng maayos.
13:11Pero,
13:12bilang
13:12Pilipino,
13:14nakikita ko na
13:14love language
13:15natin ay pagkain.
13:19May pagka may pakailam
13:20ka sa pagkain
13:21ng bawat pamilyang
13:22Pilipino.
13:23May pakailam ka sa buhay.
13:39We have a concept
13:40that because it is waste
13:41or scrap,
13:41it has to be free.
13:42Upcycling,
13:45essentially,
13:46it has to come up
13:47as a business.
13:48It has to have products
13:49which hold
13:49their space
13:50in the market.
13:54You can't ask people
13:56to buy something
13:57because it makes
13:58more sense
13:58as being a sustainable
13:59product
14:00or a green product
14:01but somebody
14:02should buy it
14:03because they like it.
14:04So,
14:04it has to be
14:04aesthetic,
14:05it has to be
14:06good looking,
14:06well made
14:07and functionally
14:08perfect
14:09at par
14:09with other products.
14:10The perception
14:15that upcycling
14:16has to be cheap,
14:17that has to be
14:18challenged
14:18and that has
14:18to be explained
14:19because you are
14:21saving on material
14:22but you are going
14:22to end up
14:23paying more on
14:24labor and transport
14:25and design costs.
14:28Again,
14:29the life of what
14:30you've created
14:30should be long enough
14:31that the energy
14:32and the processes
14:33that are going
14:34behind it
14:34are justified.
14:35For me,
14:52the personal
14:53and I think
14:54about how
14:55the new
14:57community pantry
14:58PH,
14:59community pantry
15:00movement
15:01in the Philippines
15:02is
15:02to express
15:04stories
15:05of kindness
15:05in each other.
15:13There are so many
15:14inspiring stories
15:15like teens
15:17who are in the
15:17drug list
15:18in the community
15:19pantry
15:19LGBT communities
15:22in the community
15:23pantry
15:24doctors
15:27frontliners
15:29in the community
15:29pantry
15:30in the community
15:31pharmacy
15:31and
15:32free online
15:35community
15:35consultations
15:37and
15:37mental health.
15:43And eventually,
15:44when I'm a family
15:45I want to instill
15:46that I want to
15:47know that
15:48the world
15:49needs to be
15:50good.
15:50for more
16:05to improve
16:06the mission
16:07of convenience
16:07to see
16:08the mission
16:08of education
16:08in the community
16:09into three
16:10part of education
16:11first is education
16:13So we went to campus-campus, I became a senior student at the Faculty of Fashion.
16:25And the second thing is the exhibition.
16:28I also exhibition in public spaces, in the mall, in the park, in the city, in the middle of the city.
16:39I also went to gallery.
16:43And the last thing is the Fabric Labs, in which we create new materials from upcycling residues for the production of daur ulang.
