Good afternoon. My name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Really lovely
00:07
to speak to Andrew White again, especially last year. We spoke about the debut tour.
00:11
It went well. It went well to the extent that you are back trying out a show in Chichester,
00:16
the Chichester Fringe. Andrew White, rhinestone comedian. I nearly misread that. Rhinestone
00:22
comedian. I beg your pardon. Tuesday, June the 10th at the Headlander. So last year,
00:28
the debut tour, you were pleased. Yes, very happy with how it went. It was
00:33
very speculative because I just had no idea what my following was like. Obviously, you have numbers
00:39
on the screen, but yeah, you have no idea who's actually going to turn up and book the tickets.
00:43
So yeah, I had a lot of fun. We had really, really nice crowds and, you know, really, really nice
00:48
crowds of, you know, just sort of 20 and really, really nice crowds of 80 or so. Yeah, it was a
00:56
real great mix, just enjoying everyone's company out on the road, really. It was a lot of fun.
01:01
And that must be a confidence booster, just to have that debut tour under your belt, isn't it?
01:07
Yeah, it definitely makes it feel, it feels more proper. It feels like you're sort of
01:11
stepping in the right direction. And yeah, just to know that people out there, A, want to come
01:16
see you specifically, and B, will actually make the effort to is, yeah, it was really great.
01:21
And all that, as you're saying, is in a scenario that's probably a bit difficult, isn't it,
01:26
in the circuit these days? You have time for social media following, there's a lot of
01:30
competition, but you've started to make your way, haven't you, clearly?
01:34
Yes, yeah, well, it's a double-edged sword, really, you know, sort of TV's dying off and
01:38
there's a lot less opportunities to stand up, to sort of rise through the traditional media ranks.
01:45
So you've got to make your own way on social media. On one hand, you know, there's no gatekeepers,
01:50
anyone can make their name. On the other hand, at least with gatekeepers, there was a very set
01:54
plan that you could follow. So, yeah, it's a bit of an interesting sort of wild west, I
02:01
suppose, appropriate for a rhinestone comedian that we're in at the moment.
02:04
Yeah, a rhinestone comedian, that's because you like to add a touch of glamour then, isn't
02:10
it?
02:10
Yes, yeah. Yes, I suppose it's a bit, it's twofold, the rhinestone cowboy sort of, you know,
02:16
traipsing along, doing what I love doing, and then specifically rhinestone, because I'm
02:21
always in sparkly heels and some pearls, and I've got them right here. Just, yeah, I like
02:27
to put on a bit of a show.
02:29
You didn't dress up for me?
02:31
No, apologies, this is my dress down, sometimes it feels like maybe, if I want to Zoom call
02:38
in full glam, it sort of seems like a pre-arranged thing that something questionable's happening.
02:42
Fair enough. So this is work in progress, isn't it? So what depends on Chichester? What
02:48
are you hoping to gain from Chichester and learn from Chichester?
02:52
Yeah, well, I live in Portsmouth now, so it's very convenient, 20 minutes up the road, and
02:56
I've heard good things about the Chichester Fringe, so I'm just hoping it'll be a nice
03:00
place to see what people like, really. I've got a big sort of back catalogue of material,
03:06
I've got some new stuff that I've written, and yeah, I guess it's just pulling threads to
03:11
see what people really respond to, you know, put the funniest stuff at the end, but put
03:17
strong openers, and yeah, a bit of sort of crafting and working it all out, and also
03:22
indeed trying stuff that will never be said again. So yeah, it'll be a real creative mishmash.
03:26
Well, really good to speak to you again. Good luck with this one. It's Andrew White,
03:31
Rhinestone comedian, Tuesday June the 10th, at the Havana as part of the Chichester Fringe.
03:36
Good to see you. Thank you. Thank you, Phil. Cheers.
