00:00Our next guest is a star of television's hottest show.
00:03That would be Justin Hartley of CBS's Tracker.
00:06It is the most watched entertainment program averaging more than, listen to this number,
00:1118 million viewers per episode.
00:14People would kill for those numbers.
00:16This series' second season returns this Sunday.
00:19Hartley stars as lone wolf Coulter Shaw, who uses his survivalist skills to find missing people
00:24and then collect the reward money.
00:26So in the new episodes, there's a new lead in Shaw's white whale case,
00:30leading him to work with a retired cop named Keaton.
00:34October 15, 2014, Gina Pickett, age 19, is working at the Hot Topic at the Whale Town Mall.
00:42Shift ended at 6 p.m.
00:43She leaves the building at 6.10 p.m.
00:46Now mall surveillance sees her in the mall parking lot headed to her car,
00:50except she never made it there.
00:52She disappeared into a blind spot, never to be seen again.
00:54Next day, the car is found when her sister goes looking for her.
01:00Police were called to the scene.
01:02And nobody around Gina or following her on the surveillance video?
01:06Nope.
01:08I went through hours of footage from those mall cameras, all of them, and I got nothing.
01:12Nothing.
01:13Well, he got something.
01:15Justin Hartley joins us.
01:16We welcome and congratulations.
01:18Thank you very much.
01:19Superstar and executive producer of the hit show, $18 million.
01:22My head is doing Exorcist's neck to end with that.
01:25Yeah.
01:25Mine, too.
01:26So bravo to you.
01:27Thank you.
01:27So the second season is starting off with a bang.
01:29I have to say, I noticed there seems to be more action and more fights that you do very, very well.
01:34Was that your idea?
01:35Did you say amp it up a little bit?
01:37You know, it was sort of a collective agreement.
01:40We had a conversation about it and our head writer is brilliant, but he's also used to be a bouncer.
01:47And so he understands fights between big grown men typically don't last very long, right?
01:52They're usually really quick.
01:54So we try to make them dynamic and quick at the same time and realistic, you know?
01:58So that's sort of our goal.
01:59And what about your dog?
02:00But sometimes you think things are too easy and you ask for the action to be amped up?
02:03Yeah, I mean, sometimes it needs a little bit more.
02:07We've got a really great stunt coordinator who puts the fights together for us.
02:09So we all stay pretty safe and everything.
02:11And when you have to do these things over and over and over again, you also have to remember that, you know, what you're seeing, I've probably done 15 times.
02:19And so the body takes a little bit of a beating, so you've got to be careful.
02:22All right, so we've been teasing it all morning.
02:24Apparently, to get into this character, Tracker, you turned off your car's GPS at one point.
02:30Why'd you do that?
02:31And what happened?
02:31Because I do a lot of dumb things.
02:32I don't know why I thought that would benefit me at all in any way, but all it did was get me lost and embarrassed and give me just a ton of, like, humble pie.
02:43I was like, oh, I don't know where I am ever, you know?
02:46It's really, it's ironic.
02:48I play this Tracker guy and never know where the hell I am.
02:51So I'm a sucker for a great origin story.
02:53And one of the things you're doing in this season, you're getting into Coulter's backstory, his rough childhood.
02:58As the child of survivalists, why did you want to incorporate that aspect into your story?
03:03I mean, I think that I'm, at least when I watch TV, I always love an origin story, like you said.
03:09I want to know more about the character, why he does the things that he does, why he behaves the way he does.
03:14And all these little intricate details of this guy's life when he was a kid, as we all, they shape us, who we are and how we interact with other people.
03:24So I think when you watch this guy interact with these people, you know, he has such an interesting life.
03:29He dives fully into these people's lives.
03:32He gets to know them really quickly, really well, asks them really personal questions.
03:38They divulge all this information to him, and then he splits and he's gone.
03:42I love the storylines, Justin.
03:44Every story is different.
03:46Starts out with a bang, and part of the fun for me is trying to figure out where this is going.
03:49Takes many twists and turns in the hour that it's on.
03:53Episode three, we get to see the lovely Sophia.
03:55We like Sophia.
03:56She's your wife in real life.
03:58But she plays your nemesis.
03:59So when I'm watching, and you guys are having this back and forth where you don't like each other, I'm looking in the eyes to see, is there a little wink?
04:06Is there a little something?
04:06What is it like looking in her face, knowing that you two don't like each other in this particular plot?
04:11Well, it's interesting because we, it's fun to play.
04:15Yeah, I'll bet.
04:15Because it's a safe place to play with that.
04:18She's such a good actor, and they have a complicated past.
04:22She betrayed them, you know?
04:23And so he's, you know, he keeps that in mind when dealing with her.
04:27She comes back later on in the season to return a favor that Coulter needs.
04:34And she does it in a big way, and it ends in this pretty, I don't want to say explosive, but almost heartbreaking thing that happens where she really puts herself on the line for him in a big, big way.
04:47And he kind of realizes, you know, maybe he went too far with the ask.
04:50So she's got a really good story arc, as do all of our guest stars.
04:54We have, I mean, that's one of the beautiful things about being on this show.
04:57We get these amazing guest stars that come on.
04:59Mr. Sexton, you just saw in the preview there.
05:02He is, he's wonderful.
05:03I mean, what a great guy to work with.
05:05Just so.
05:06I kept waiting for a betrayal, but that didn't happen.
05:08But let's talk about you as we wrap it up.
05:11Two hit shows.
05:12I mean, this is us, and now this.
05:14Must be fun to be Justin Hartley these days.
05:16Really, bravo to you.
05:17Oh, well, I get to hang out with you fine people.
05:19I mean, this is, I mean, how could you, come on, I'm coming on the, you know, this show's amazing.
05:22I get to be with you.
05:23I mean, who, who, who would have thought?
05:24I want to talk about you, Justin.
05:27We are delightful and great, but I want to talk about you.
05:30How this feels for you.
05:31It feels good.
05:31You know, I, I, Ken Olin and I both came from, from This Is Us.
05:35Yes.
05:35That was Dan Fogelman's show.
05:37And Ken and I had many conversations about the culture that was on that show that Dan made sure,
05:43he made sure everyone was kind and, and, and felt appreciated and, and did their job well.
05:49Yeah.
05:50And was motivated to do so.
05:51So we brought that culture to Tracker and it's been, it's been really great.
05:54Everyone walks around with smiles and they all seem very happy.
05:57So that's, that's the most important.
05:58I remember Ken from the 30 show.
06:00I think he's terrific too.
06:01He's terrific.
06:01That's where he's back in the day.
06:03Thank you, Justin.
06:03You're knocking everything out of the park.
06:05Thank you, man.
06:05We wish you the best from here on out.
06:06Congratulations.
06:07Thank you.
06:0718 million.
06:08Fans can't be wrong.
06:0918 million.
06:09Be one of them.
06:10Tracker returns to CBS this Sunday.
06:13We'll be right back.
06:14Be one of them.
06:151801.
