00:00In 1980, during maintenance work on a drainage canal in Comacchio, a town in northern Italy,

00:06workers made an incredible discovery.

00:09The remains of an ancient Roman ship, this shipwreck dating back to around 1 BC, had

00:15been buried for centuries beneath layers of mud and earth.

00:18It turned out to be a Roman merchant vessel carrying its cargo.

00:22The ship was loaded with valuable goods, including wine, oil lamps, and other everyday trade items.

00:29These items were commonly traded across the Roman Empire, which stretched across large

00:34parts of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

00:37What makes this discovery so important is that it gives historians a rare and detailed look

00:43at Roman trade and seafaring life.

00:45The way the ship was built shows the advanced shipbuilding technique of the Romans.

00:50It also helps us understand how goods were transported, what peoples traded, and how connected different
