Chelsea’s financial might endures as Roman Abramovich breaks silence on club sale

Roman Abramovich is set to speak publicly for the first time since 2006 in a new book detailing Chelsea’s £4.25 billion sale.  The former owner oversaw a dominant era before selling the club in 2022 after UK sanctions.  Meanwhile, Chelsea’s financial muscle remains unmatched, leading agent fee spending in both the Premier League and Women’s Super League.

00:19Champions League trophy. However, he was forced to sell the club in 2022 after being sanctioned

00:26by the UK government due to alleged links to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has now

00:33given a rare two-part interview for an upcoming book sanctioned the inside story of the sale of

00:39Chelsea FC, which details the £4.25 billion sale to American consortium led by Todd Bowley and Clear Lake

00:47Capital. These are Abramovich's first major public comments since 2006, aside from a short interview

00:55with Forbes before the sale. Though proceeds from the Chelsea sale were meant to go towards

01:00humanitarian aid in Ukraine, the funds remain frozen. Chelsea have also topped the Premier

01:07League's agent fee spending list for the second consecutive year. According to figures from

01:12the Football Association, Chelsea spent around £60 million on agents between February 2024

01:18and February 2025. That's down from their previous spend, but still the highest in the league.

01:32they have to trust the team, they have to trust the club, what we are doing now. And the reason why

01:37is because if in the last two seasons, Chelsea was zero times top four, and this season, we spent almost

01:53In the Women's Super League, Chelsea were again the biggest spenders, paying just over £600,000

02:00to intermediaries, almost triple Manchester City's total. Overall, Chelsea remain one of the most
