00:46Are you ready?
00:48Listen again to my introduction.
00:50Hola, soy Lucia.
00:52Mucho gusto.
00:53Hi, I'm Lucia.
00:54Nice to meet you.
00:57Hola, soy Lucia.
00:59Mucho gusto.
01:01The first word is hola, which means hi or hello.
01:06After that comes soy, which means I am.
01:10Hola, soy.
01:11And then your name.
01:12Hola, soy Lucia.
01:13Lucia means hi, I'm Lucia.
01:16Finally, say mucho gusto, which means nice to meet you.
01:19So, all together it is.
01:21Hola, soy Lucia.
01:23Mucho gusto.
01:24Hi, I'm Lucia.
01:25Nice to meet you.
01:27It's a polite and common way to greet someone.
01:29There is also another way to say your name.
01:33Instead of soy Lucia, you could say me llamo Lucia.
01:37Me llamo.
01:38Literally means I call myself.
01:41But we use it to mean my name is.
01:43Hola, me llamo Lucia.
01:45Mucho gusto.
01:46Hi, my name is Lucia.
01:48Nice to meet you.
01:49Hola, me llamo Lucia.
01:53Mucho gusto.
01:56Again, let's take a look at these two ways to introduce yourself.
02:01Hola, soy Lucia.
02:03Mucho gusto.
02:04Hi, I'm Lucia.
02:06Nice to meet you.
02:08Hola, me llamo Lucia.
02:10Mucho gusto.
02:11Hi, my name is Lucia.
02:13Nice to meet you.
02:15Now it's time for Lucia's Insights.
02:17People in Spanish-speaking countries greet each other by shaking hands.
02:21By depending on the situation, we often kiss each other on the cheek.
02:25So don't be surprised if this happens to you.
02:28In the last lesson, we learned how to introduce ourself in Spanish.
02:32In this lesson, we are going to learn how to use good manners as we thank people.
02:37ÂżEstĂĄn listos?
02:38Are you ready?
02:39Empecemos.
02:40Let's start.
02:41There are several ways to thank someone.
02:44Let's start with the easiest.
02:46It's just one word.
02:48Gracias.
02:49Gracias.
02:49Gracias means thank you.
02:52To say thank you very much, you just need to add muchas before it.
02:57Muchas means very or a lot.
03:00Muchas gracias.
03:02Muchas gracias.
03:05For a simple thanks, gracias will be enough.
03:09If you want to say more than just thanks, muchas gracias is good to use.
03:13Now, how do you respond to thank you in Spanish?
03:18It's easy.
03:19The most common way to say you're welcome is de nada.
03:22De nada.
03:24Nada means nothing.
03:27So, de nada literally means it's nothing.
03:30So we use it to mean you're welcome.
03:33So when someone says gracias to you, you can simply reply with de nada.
03:38Now, it's time for Lucia's insights.
03:41Gracias.
03:42If you're not sure about whether to use gracias or muchas gracias, keep it simple is always
03:48your safest bet.
03:49You don't have to worry about formal or informal situations.
03:53Gracias can be used with just about anyone, anywhere, and at any time.
03:58In the last lesson, we'll learn how to show thanks by saying gracias.
04:03In this lesson, we will learn some of the most common greetings used in Spanish.
04:08ÂżEstĂĄn listos?
04:09Are you ready?
04:10Empecemos.
04:11Let's start.
04:12The most used informal greeting is hola.
04:16Hola.
04:17Hola means hi or hello.
04:20We can use it in formal and informal situations, at any time of day.
04:24It's very convenient.
04:26Hola.
04:26Now, let's look at some greetings that are used at certain times of day.
04:32First, it's good morning.
04:34Good morning in Spanish is buenos dias.
04:38Buenos dias.
04:40Buenos dias literally means good day, but we use it to mean good morning.
04:47During the day, we say buenas tardes.
04:50Buenas tardes.
04:52Buenas tardes means good afternoon.
04:54This can be used all day, as long as it's light outside.
04:59Again, buenas tardes.
05:01When it starts to get dark, you can switch to this.
05:05Buenas noches.
05:07Buenas noches.
05:09Buenas noches means good evening or good night, depending on the situation.
05:14If you're greeting someone in the evening, it means good evening.
05:18If you're speaking to someone before you go to sleep, it means good night.
05:23Buenas noches means good evening.
05:24Again, that's buenas noches.
05:27Now, you can greet people in many different ways in Spanish.
05:32Let's review them all again.
05:34As a general greeting, hola.
05:38In the morning, buenos dias.
05:41In the afternoon or during the day, buenas tardes.
05:45In the evening or at night, buenas noches.
05:49Pretty easy, right?
05:50Alright, now it's time for Lucia's Insights.
05:53If you're not sure which greeting is right to use, buenos dias, buenas tardes, or buenas noches,
06:01just remember that the other can be used at any time of day.
06:05In the last lesson, we'll learn the most common greeting in Spanish.
06:09Do you remember them?
06:10In this lesson, we're going to learn a very useful phrase.
06:14Do you speak English?
06:15If you're in a situation where you need help in English, this phrase can be a lifesaver.
06:22Here is a formal way to say it.
06:24Habla inglés.
06:25Habla inglés.
06:28Again, this means, do you speak English?
06:31The word habla is a form of the verb hablar, which means to speak.
06:36This is the formal way to say you speak.
06:40Hablar is known as an AR verb because it ends in AR.
06:44Most AR verbs conjugate in a similar way.
06:48To learn how to properly conjugate AR verbs like hablar,
06:53please check out our Absolute Beginners series on SpanishPort101.com.
06:59Now, let's make this sentence informal.
07:02This is done by adding an S to the end of habla.
07:05When we do that, we get HABLAS.
07:10All together, HABLAS inglés.
07:13HABLAS inglés.
07:15This is the informal way to ask, do you speak English?
07:19The responses you receive could be one of these three.
07:23No, I don't speak English.
07:48In all of these, HABLO means I speak.
07:56In the last one, we have NO HABLO, which is the negative form.
08:01It means I don't speak.
08:04Now it's time for Alicia's Insights.
08:07If you want to ask about a different language, just change the word INGLEZ.
08:12Here are some language names to get you started.
08:16Italiano for Italian.
08:19Russo for Russian.
08:21Francés for French.
08:24AlemĂĄn for German.
08:26In the last lesson, we learned the phrase HABLA INGLEZE.
08:29Do you speak English?
08:31In this lesson, we are going to learn how to apologize or say EXCUSE ME in Spanish.
08:35The basic phrase for EXCUSE ME is DISCULPE.
08:41DISCULPE.
08:42We should use DISCULPE in formal situations, like when we are ordering something at a restaurant.
08:48For example, DISCULPE, UN CAFE POR FAVOR.
08:52EXCUSE ME, A COFFEE PLEASE.
08:55We can also use it when asking a question.
08:58DISCULPE, DONDE ESTÁ EL BAÑO?
09:01EXCUSE ME, WHERE IS THE RESTROOM?
09:03Another way to say EXCUSE ME is PERDÓN.
09:08PER-DÓN.
09:09Just like DISCULPE, we can use PERDÓN when asking a question or when apologizing.
09:16Both of these phrases can be used for either EXCUSE ME or I'M SORRY.
09:20But if you really want to apologize for something, it might be better to use a different phrase.
09:25That phrase is LO SIENTO.
09:28It means I'M SORRY and it can be used in both formal and informal situations.
09:34LO SIENTO.
09:36Unlike the others, LO SIENTO only has the meaning of I'M SORRY and not EXCUSE ME.
09:41Now it's time for Lucia's Insights.
09:43Please remember that if we accidentally bump into someone on the street, we don't usually
09:49say I'M SORRY, LO SIENTO.
09:51Instead, we say EXCUSE ME, DISCULPE, OR PERDÓN.
09:56Are you able to count in Spanish?
09:59In the next lesson, we're going to learn the numbers in Spanish from one to ten.
10:03Hasta la prĂłxima.
10:05See you soon.
