00:00I just thought I was by myself out there in this world, there was nothing else.
00:07It was a very difficult time for an individual.
00:11The thing that one would fear most was being encountered by the police who wanted to arrest you.
00:17You would be arrested and then you would go to jail.
00:20I got hit in the head with a pipe. They scurried away and they hit me in the head.
00:25They went into the alley on the side of the cathedral and they beat the living crap out of this unsuspecting young man and left him there.
00:35They were charged with murder. The jury found them not guilty. The courtroom cheered.
00:46The season of carnivals the world over has a brilliant send-off in New Orleans,
00:51says Mardi Gras, most vivid and ancient of America's festivals.
00:55As kids growing up, I guess our fondest memories were Mardi Gras.
00:58You were always in costume for Mardi Gras.
01:00Whether you were a sailor, if you were an Indian, if you were a clown.
01:03And then one year, my mother and cousin decided to dress me as Scarlett O'Hara.
01:09It was a gorgeous green satin dress. It was lovely.
01:14Most of us had no idea how to do makeup.
01:16So the first year we got The Undertaker from Boltmans to come and he did our makeup.
01:21You wonder why we didn't look so good. He wasn't used to doing makeup on people that moved.
01:25Instead of having a debutante, as they did at the straight balls, we had a debut tramp.
01:30Of course, the maids were all men in female attire.
01:33That's a tramp.
01:35We're not going to let anybody stop us from enjoying ourselves.
01:41We're doing absolutely nothing wrong.
01:43Ladies and gentlemen!
01:44And so we just stood up, that's all.
01:47The fabulous Queen of Armenia!
01:51I don't think the gay community in their 20s and 30s,
01:54I don't think they even have a clue what some people that are my age went through to get them where they are.
02:00I was Queen twice.
02:04They don't seem to have any mountain to climb or anything anymore.
02:07They should have because God knows we're not settled in very well.
02:11We still don't have the rights that everybody else has.
02:14If you don't have equal rights, you don't have anything.
02:17What possessed me to wear that hair?
02:20I'll leave bread and garb alone.
02:25I'll be your boy star on your own.
02:28If you're close, you'll pass away.
02:32You might need a summer rainy day.
02:36Dreams can come true again.
02:40When everything old is new again.
02:44Tracy, what's your number?
02:4728.
02:4828?
02:49Uh-huh.
02:50Queen, 28.
02:52Tina, we don't go too long.
02:57Yeah, everybody hit him more.
02:58What's your number?
02:59Mm-hmm .
03:05What a song?
03:10Ray and I have perfect...
