00:01Pope Francis died of a stroke and subsequent irreversible heart failure,

00:07says the Vatican in its latest statement.

00:10He was 88 years old and passed away early Monday morning.

00:16The Pope had recently spent five weeks in hospital, battling double pneumonia,

00:21but returned to the Vatican and lighter duties towards the end of March.

00:27He also asked to be buried in a simple tomb in St. Mary Major Basilica, not the Vatican.
