00:14Because I've been invited down to the iconic London Coliseum
00:18for an exclusive sneak peek at the all-new Great Gatsby Musical.
00:23So let's shimmy our way to the stage to see all the razzle-dazzle
00:27that that old rascal Gatsby's got in store.
00:40Guys, it's so good to see you both.
00:42We're here backstage at the London Coliseum.
00:45You've just performed. How are you feeling?
00:48Fine, how are you? Good.
00:50That was early. It was early.
00:52It was a little bit of a matinee that wasn't expecting a matinee.
00:55We haven't done a matinee yet. So that was a little test.
01:07How long does it take you to recover after doing new money?
01:11Yeah, it's a marathon, isn't it?
01:14It's getting shorter. The recovery time's getting shorter as my stamina's building.
01:18So I'd say a couple minutes.

01:57So even though I might not be as exertive in my energy

03:18Previews are the period of time where we get to learn what an audience needs and what an audience responds to
03:38And so we're having a lot of fun at the moment
03:40Tweaking things, changing things
03:41So when we open officially on the 24th of April
03:44The 24th of April
03:45The show will be locked as we say
03:47And then what the audience see will be what we've learnt from the audiences that are coming now
03:53And we're learning a lot because they are loving it, you know, they are really enjoying it
03:58They're going crazy, they're screaming, they're cheering, they're standing up at the end
04:01There's an enormous queue of people at the stage door
04:04There seems to be a real affection and love for this story and this musical
04:08And I think there was a lot of anticipation about it
04:11So it's a real pleasure to work with John again
04:14We did Les Mis together in 2010
04:17And Jamie Moscato who plays The Great Gatsby
04:20He was in the same show as us
04:21So it's nice to reconnect with people and reconnect with audiences who love a show as much as we do
04:31The production, the costumes, everything about this is so spectacular
04:38How special does it feel for you guys to be launching it here in London?
04:42I mean, I was really emotional on our opening day
04:45I cried throughout the entire day
04:47Because I think it's very rare that you get to open a brand new musical on the London Coliseum stage with a cast like this
04:59I just feel like eternally grateful for this opportunity
05:03Absolutely, this is my West End debut
05:05So I am extremely grateful and excited to be here
05:08Yeah, it's incredibly special
05:10We've had such a great team coaching us through it
05:14And as I said before, working with Frankie is amazing
05:17So it feels very fun
05:19It feels like easy in the sense that, you know, they've done it on Broadway already
05:25So they've brought over this blueprint for the show
05:28Which we get to follow
05:29But then also have fun and play and make it our own
05:33Which is always like a bonus when you get to do that
05:36It's mad, isn't it?

05:39The younger musical theatre kid in me would be like
05:42There is no way this is happening
05:44And it's gone crazy on TikTok
05:46So now The Great Gatsby, all the young ones just want to come and watch the

05:51But because of Dom's amazing choreography as well
05:55It's just going crazy through the roof
05:57The kids are loving it
05:59They're really loving it
06:00For it being such an old story
06:04The fact that they can bring it this day and age

06:09With the same, you know, same through line
06:12The same characters
06:14It lends itself so well
06:16And it is such a party

06:18There's a massive fan base from Broadway, isn't there?
06:20And it ranges pretty wide in terms of age as well

06:25It's definitely a millennial and a Gen Z following
06:29Which is very impressive

06:31I think a lot of it has to do with its presence in social media
06:35But as a show, it definitely speaks to a wider range of audience

06:42I think like, TikTok and all that helps, you know?

06:45And like, Dominic Kelly's choreography went viral

06:48That, you know, that kind of went all around the world
06:51Which was amazing
06:54And I even noticed that Jordan's Bob has a fan page

07:58That is what is helping bringing new audiences to the West End
08:01Because I do think there is an appetite for that

08:08Especially in London
08:09Like a lot of that fan base was created online
08:13It's like people with the same interest come together don't they?
08:20And they create a fan page or something like that
08:23So I definitely think we are going to see more of that
08:28And it's great for us isn't it?

08:31I think you know it's been with the dawn of even stuff like Broadway HD
08:36People who wouldn't even necessarily be able to take the trip to London to the West End
08:41Or to New York to Broadway to experience that calibre of theatre
08:45You're getting to experience it at home and I think it just brings in the audience
08:50And makes people want to go and have that experience
08:52Even if it's just local theatre, regional theatre
08:54Yeah

08:57We want young audiences in the theatre you know
09:00They come and come again
09:02And like it makes them want to see other things
09:05Because you know the theatre is a tricky thing to sell at the minute
09:10So hopefully this is Xavi Sargent's

09:13I think when something can hit on things like TikTok at the moment
09:16All of a sudden you get a brand new audience through your life
09:18Yeah there are people like that that only know of shows because of social media
09:23So this is the way we're going kids
09:25It's like gotta pivot, use social channels, use like the people that are rather big on social media
09:32And get a new audience in because that's what we need
09:35New fresh blood

09:43You're obviously you know renowned stars of the stage

10:08It's so spectacular to watch I mean the sets the costumes I want it all I want to live in this show
10:21It's such my aesthetic I love the 1920s old Hollywood
10:25What's it like getting to work in a show where you've got that level of expertise with the sets and the costumes?
10:31Well this show is unlike anything else in the West End right now
10:34It's unlike anything that's been on the West End for a very long time
10:37Yeah
10:38In scale, in scope, in imagination, in colour, in detail
10:43The costumes won a Tony award on Broadway and as soon as we put them on
10:48I mean they made them bespoke for us which is always lovely
10:50As soon as we put them on you feel like the costumes are narrative, the sets are narrative, the lighting is narrative
10:58Everything comes together in a beautiful sort of holistic presentation so that you can understand the story and the era

11:13And why do you think people are obsessed with this story because it just transcends all ages as well
11:18People absolutely love it, why do you think it is? Is it the glitz? Is it the glam? Is it the party?
11:23I think it's all of the above really
11:25You can sort of see a bit of yourself in so many of the characters for good or bad
11:30There's a really complex, interesting love story at the heart
11:37There's the class divides, there's the striving for something you haven't got and always reaching for something else
11:48Which I think people can sort of again see themselves in
11:52And the musical's been quite faithfully taken from the book as well which I think is another bonus
11:59So yeah, I think it's got all the ingredients to make a lovely cake
12:03The themes are timeless but also it's one big party and who doesn't love a party?
12:08Yeah, it's the biggest party in the West End
12:10It is, honestly, this is your tickets money worth with this show
12:14Visually it's unreal, isn't it?
12:16For the eyes, ears, it's like
12:18It's a feast for the eyes, isn't it, right?

12:22It's a candy store, honestly, it is spectacular
12:25But there's real heart to this story, I think
12:29And I do think our characters are that more realistic side of the depression of the 1920s
12:36And there's a reality in it, there's a real truth
12:39And at the end of the day, you know
12:41It's quite apt for today, isn't it?

12:43People will connect, I think they will connect with mine and Rachel's characters

12:47A bit more today with what we get, the working class
12:49And does money really buy you happiness?

13:07I think this is probably the biggest one I've ever done
13:09You know, I've worked on Broadway twice
13:11You know, I've travelled the world performing
13:13Worked in some of the most beautiful theatres
13:15And this by far is the most spectacular thing I've been a part of
13:18It's an absolute joy
13:19And also, we should give credit to the rest of the cast here
13:22Because the ensemble
13:24The depth of talent in the ensemble is unbelievable
13:27Yeah, unbelievable
13:28You know, every single person brings something special to the show
13:31And, you know, obviously they're not as good as the principles
13:34But they are very good
13:35Yeah, you'll have to cut that bit out

13:40It's really, really something that people ought to see
13:43I mean, I'm sold

14:02So we found something in these interviews at the moment where it definitely tips his hat to the golden age of MGM

14:17And then for the younger generation, they've obviously seen the social media

14:54You've got some of the best performers in this show

15:08I think if you're coming to London for one night, this is a show you have to see
15:12It's a story that you will have known, but it's a whole fresh take on it
15:17And it is a spectacle
15:19The show is really about giving you value for money in terms of the presentation and the emotional connection to it
15:26It's a tragic love story, but it's told through the lens of a party and that's really special
15:31Yeah, and also it's one of those things where money's tight for people at the moment everywhere
15:36You know, and if you are going to choose to see a show, why not choose a show where every single penny of your ticket price is up on that stage
15:45You know, it is such a spectacle to witness and I guarantee you will have a good night out
15:50Even if you don't like the story, you don't like the music, which is also excellent by the way
15:55Every morning I wake up with a different song in my head
15:58Yeah, none of them are ours

16:00And you know, it's excellent in every different, but if you don't like any of that, you will at least think
16:06Ah, that's where my money's gone, because it is opulent

16:13It is such a wide gamut of emotions and experiences
16:19Obviously the book just celebrated its 100th anniversary since the original publication

16:25So it is a great American novel
16:26I've been a fan of the book since I was in middle school when I first read it
16:31So the book itself is such a beautiful masterpiece and its adaptation is done so well here
16:38But you get to come, you get to have the party
16:42And then you get to hear the voices of the women in this book in this particular production
16:49Because that's something that we didn't get in the novel
16:51And I think that how wonderfully that's done through the music is just a beautiful experience
16:58Also you feel every type of emotion
17:01We give them a bit of comedy
17:03We give them the wow factor
17:05A couple of certain things that happen throughout the show
17:08There's also heartache
17:13Absolutely
17:14And we range through everything emotionally
17:17But also it's such a big show
17:20That John Robbins said this a couple of weeks ago
17:23That you'd have to come back again to see it again
17:27To catch more things
17:28Because there's so much going on
17:29It's a feast for the eyes, you know
17:31And I think that's really special
17:33That it's so big that you'd have to come twice
