00:30Malcolm, Jib, and Diggie are all deeply obsessed with 90s hip-hop culture,
00:35submerging themselves in the music,
00:37watching old Yo! MTV Raps episodes for fashion tips,
00:39and using the slang.
00:41Dill break.
00:43Malcolm and his friends are into 90s hip-hop and punk music
00:47and rocking out.
00:49The 90s were special because the music felt so different.
00:52It was so much diversity.
00:54Hip-hop felt like the most dangerous, exciting, innovative thing
00:59that was happening.
00:59I've been seeing you and your little friends
01:01with y'all flat tops and MC Hammer pins.
01:03What's up with that anyway?
01:0590s hip-hop is the golden era of...
01:08Oh, pardon my language. I'm sorry.
01:10I'm too excited.
01:12We're all in a punk band called Oreo because...
01:16Because they're into white.
01:17Like skateboards, manga comics, Donald Glover,
01:20and for listening to white, like trash talk,
01:23TV on the radio, and for doing white,
01:25like getting good grades and applying to college.
01:27I'm eating good.
01:29Can't bring me down.
01:31Can't bring me down.
01:33Pharrell wrote and produced all the music
01:36and lyrics for the Oreo songs in the movie.
01:38We have some really great songs that are positive.
01:41They're kind of loud and kind of rock and roll feeling.
01:43I mean, I just love it.
01:44One, two, one, two, three, four.
01:48The music is from Malcolm's perspective.
01:51Yeah, first day in school.
01:55Good, great, so cool.
01:56When you listen to the music,
01:58it's like you hear the freedom inside the voice.
02:00When you watch the power of them,
02:01they're rocking out and jumping up and down
02:03and screaming.
02:03It's a celebratory kind of thing.
02:05like the nerdy kid
02:06that has something to say.
02:09We are Oreo.
02:11About to turn up, okay?
02:13The angst that you feel in the chorus of,
02:15like a don't get deleted,
02:17it's on purpose.
02:18Don't wish for me.
02:19I'm not in the mood, Lord.
02:22It's music turned up really loud
02:24and distorted as an exclamation to his expression.
02:28Don't get deleted.
02:30The actors, Tony, Shameek, and Kiersey,
02:37that's all them singing
02:39and it was an incredible experience.
02:41Without the music,
02:42it would be a totally different movie.
02:44Miss McCoy.
02:45She McCoy what?
02:46The song.
02:47Come on.
02:48We were given a great opportunity
02:50to do what we've always tried to do at NERD,
02:52which is sort of push the envelope.
02:54Waiting for some inspiration.
02:57Inspiration.
02:58Yes.
02:58You know, push the conscious barrier.
03:00To pass by.
03:02To pass by.
03:03It's my turn now.
03:05It's my turn now.
03:06The music really drives home the energy
03:09and the attitude and the mind frame
03:11of who these kids are.
03:13Who do you think you are?
03:14We celebrate individuality
03:16and realizing the value and intelligence.
03:20So who am I?
03:21Allow me to reintroduce myself.
03:22My name is...
03:28It's my turn now.
03:31I have a song.
03:32So I can find out the music I made for you.
03:35Now speaking.
03:37I was born again.
03:38To pass by.
03:38That's what I mean.
03:39It's my turn now.
03:39I love to rush people with this.
03:41I know why.
03:41Call me.
03:42It's my turn.
03:52It's a turn now.
03:52I say my turn.
