Le détective américain Sam Spade s'est établi dans le petit village de Bozouls dans le Sud de la France. Loin de San Francisco, il mène une existence banale jusqu'au jour où des meurtres sont commis dans un couvent voisin. Face à cette agitation, Spade reprend du service et commence une enquête où une jeune femme un peu spéciale et un vieil ennemi semblent au centre des mystères. Dans l'esprit du "Faucon maltais" de Dashiell Hammett, Clive Owen incarne un privé américain qui enquête en Europe : un solide récit de polar "old school" au casting bien choisi.
