00:02:20Come on let's go. Hey Jennifer. Let's go back
00:02:24It's gorgeous game because there's something funny
00:02:30I
00:03:00I
00:03:06Hate Jennifer
00:03:09Look at these
00:03:12Some Joker snowshoes from some mail-order novelty house
00:03:30I
00:03:32I
00:03:58Like to welcome all of you to the real large
00:04:0250th annual Winter Carnival.
00:04:04All of us here have been looking forward
00:04:06to this big event for some time.
00:04:09Even the weather has blessed us with good snow
00:04:12and cold, sunny skies.
00:04:14I'm sure you'll agree that the events that we have lined up
00:04:18will make this our best Winter Carnival yet.
00:04:21Let me tell you a little about what we have planned.
00:04:24First of all, you may compete in as many of the events
00:04:28as you were mined to.
00:04:30We've got cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, dog sled racing,
00:04:36and every variety of alpine skiing, downhill, slalom,
00:04:42and freestyle skiing.
00:04:45It's what we used to call hot dogging.
00:04:49But you hot doggers will be judged
00:04:52on grace and originality, not on your audacity.
00:05:00Here's Billy Joe, the snow queen.
00:05:03Billy Joe!
00:05:12Hail to the queen.
00:05:26Charlie, Mr. Rowland.
00:05:28Can I help you, Buster?
00:05:29Come on, Charlie.
00:05:30No.
00:05:33Tony, could you come out here a second?
00:05:36Buster Smith wants to talk to you.
00:05:40Hi, Buster.
00:05:41What can I do for you?
00:05:42Mr. Rowland, can I talk to you a moment?
00:05:43In private.
00:05:45Sure.
00:05:50I am so pleased you remembered, Billy Joe,
00:05:53even though your mother's too young to remember,
00:05:55that I was the very first queen of our very
00:05:58first winter carnival.
00:06:00But I was only 16.
00:06:03That was 50 years ago.
00:06:06Charlie Burkett.
00:06:07Tony, this is a fine time to be going skiing.
00:06:12Hardly, Grandma.
00:06:13We have a little problem.
00:06:13The manager takes care of big problems, which
00:06:16we don't have at Real Lodge.
00:06:18No, no big problems here, Grandma.
00:06:20He thinks because he's my grandson,
00:06:23he can treat me as if I were his grandmother.
00:07:21Heidi?
00:07:23Heidi, can you explain to me exactly where?
00:07:25You won't believe me either.
00:07:27Nobody will ever believe me.
00:07:29Well, what's more important, finding your friend
00:07:31or trying to convince us that there's
00:07:33some kind of monster out there?
00:07:34There is.
00:07:35I saw its footprints.
00:07:37I heard it.
00:07:38And it's got Jennifer.
00:07:39And all anybody's doing around here
00:07:41is staring at me like I'm crazy.
00:07:43Nobody thinks you're crazy.
00:07:45The problem is the patrolman has it.
00:07:48The problem is the patrolman haven't been
00:07:50able to find Jennifer yet.
00:07:52In fact, they can't even find your tracks.
00:07:54So you're going to have to get a hold of yourself
00:07:56and take us back out there again.
00:07:58I'm not going back there.
00:08:00Please, don't ask me to.
00:08:02Please, I can't.
00:08:05OK.
00:08:06OK.
00:08:11But you can describe the spot, can't you?
00:08:13No.
00:08:15The only thing I can remember are those footprints.
00:08:18Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
00:08:22I'm scared.
00:08:22I'm scared.
00:08:23Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:08:28God, what am I going to tell Jennifer's parents?
00:08:31They always expect me to keep an eye on her.
00:08:34I'm going to call them right now.
00:08:36No, no, no, no.
00:08:36Don't worry them unnecessarily like that.
00:08:39We're going to find Jennifer.
00:08:40I promise you.
00:08:42Let's get back to the lodge and get yourself warmed up.
00:08:45I'll have Buster drive you down.
00:08:49Hey, try not to worry, OK?
00:08:51We're going to find her.
00:08:52I'm telling you.
00:08:55Thomas, you passed an old barn off by itself near a stream.
00:09:02Good girl.
00:09:04Let's go.
00:09:05Take her down to the lodge.
00:09:06Have my grandmother keep an eye on her.
00:09:09I'd hate to have our guests or anybody at Carnival
00:09:11hear that kind of story.
00:09:13From any of us, huh?
00:09:26Let's split up, see what we can find.
00:09:28We'll meet back at the lodge in a half hour.
00:09:30Let's go.
00:10:13Jennifer!
00:10:29Jennifer!
00:10:43Jennifer!
00:11:13Jennifer!
00:11:43Ah!
00:11:55Can we have your autograph, Mr. Seabird?
00:11:57You gave my father one at the 68 Winter Olympics.
00:12:00But then when you won that gold medal, he sold it.
00:12:02He did?
00:12:03Ha, ha.
00:12:04What did he get for it?
00:12:05Don't tell him.
00:12:06Let him keep his illusions.
00:12:13Will you be staying for the whole winter carnival?
00:12:16I think so.
00:12:17That's just great.
00:12:18Well, thank you.
00:12:27Well, it's nice to feel wanted somewhere.
00:12:37Coming?
00:12:53Hey, Tony.
00:12:58I don't think he recognized us.
00:13:01I think he did.
00:13:03Perhaps he's got something more important to do right now.
00:13:07No.
00:13:09Good old Tony knows I'm going to ask him for a job.
00:13:13How could he know that?
00:13:14He hasn't heard from you in ages.
00:13:16Ellen, you were right.
00:13:21Coming up here was a dumb idea.
00:13:23I never said it was a dumb idea.
00:13:25I just said you might be better off looking for work
00:13:28outside the ski business.
00:13:30This is all I know how to do.
00:13:32You know what I think, Gar?
00:13:34You don't really want a job.
00:13:36This is just an excuse to back out
00:13:38and still feel right about it.
00:13:43This wasn't an animal, and it wasn't human either.
00:13:48Well, that certainly narrows it down.
00:13:51I don't know.
00:13:52Did the other men see it?
00:13:53I don't think so.
00:13:54You didn't ask them?
00:13:55If they'd have seen it, they'd have told me.
00:13:58They thought Heidi was imagining things.
00:14:00They couldn't possibly think that of you.
00:14:02One word from you, it'd be all over town in a minute.
00:14:05Oh, it's a fine idea, but it's not going to work.
00:14:08It's not going to work.
00:14:09It's not going to work.
00:14:10It's not going to work.
00:14:11It's all going to work in a minute.
00:14:12It's a fine time to have a panic,
00:14:14just before our winter carnival.
00:14:16I'm not hiding anything.
00:14:19I didn't tell the men because I wanted to get them out
00:14:21of the area as quick as I could.
00:14:24Not because you have a vested interest
00:14:27in the future of this resort?
00:14:29Grandma, I'm going to try to spell
00:14:31it out for you very simple.
00:14:34There's something very strange and very dangerous out there.
00:14:38And if I thought it would stay up there, fine.
00:14:42We could designate the area avalanche prone
00:14:44and just seal it off.
00:14:45Well, if it were going to come any nearer,
00:14:49wouldn't it have done so by now?
00:14:51What do you base that on?
00:14:52You don't know anything about it.
00:14:55I mean, you don't know how long it's been up there,
00:14:57when it got there.
00:14:58It could have got there last night.
00:15:00Just in time for the winter carnival.
00:15:02What are you being so facetious about?
00:15:05For heaven's sake, what do you want us to do?
00:15:08Report it to Sheriff Paraday immediately.
00:15:11Report what to Sheriff Paraday?
00:15:13Can you hear yourself describing what you saw,
00:15:15what you thought you saw?
00:15:17Tony, we need this carnival.
00:15:20It's what keeps the tourists coming here all year round.
00:15:22The whole town needs it.
00:15:23I know all that.
00:15:25Well, then, let's just hold our fire
00:15:27until the carnival is over.
00:15:29I agree with you.
00:15:31Let's designate the area restricted.
00:15:33Tell the maintenance crew to put up a slew of signs.
00:15:38And what do you tell Jennifer's parents?
00:15:41Tony, I'm not being insensitive.
00:15:45Just realistic.
00:15:48You know what I think?
00:15:50I think it was an avalanche.
00:15:53Bodies do disappear in avalanches, you know.
00:15:56Are you forgetting about Heidi?
00:15:59I'm not worried about Heidi.
00:16:03I certainly don't have to worry about you, Tony.
00:16:06Do I?
00:16:09After all, you are my grandson.
00:16:23Charlie, see if you can locate Sheriff Paraday for me.
00:16:26Oh, all right.
00:16:27Gar, Ellen.
00:16:30I'm sorry I had to keep running.
00:16:31Crisis.
00:16:32You two look great.
00:16:33Pete, does he still wear his gold medals to bed?
00:16:40Listen, I'm still running.
00:16:41Let's get together, have a drink later on,
00:16:43and confess everything.
00:16:47I've forgotten how beautiful you are.
00:16:54You always were the winner.
00:16:56I need a job, Tony.
00:16:57You?
00:17:02Not anymore, you don't.
00:17:24Mr. Rill, I heard you didn't find the girl.
00:17:27Where have you been?
00:17:28With Heidi?
00:17:29Yeah.
00:17:30How is she?
00:17:31Your grandmother and the doctor gave her something.
00:17:33Put her out for a while.
00:17:34She was in pretty bad shock.
00:17:36Look, Mr. Rill, I'm supposed to have the rest of the day off.
00:17:39I got a pretty good idea where the girl
00:17:41is up there on that mountain.
00:17:42If it's all right with you, I'd like
00:17:43to take a couple of patrollers up there, look around,
00:17:45see what I can find.
00:17:46No, and that's an order.
00:17:48May I ask why?
00:17:49Because I don't want anybody up there.
00:17:51I want the area posted.
00:17:52You get a hold of Ben Cochran and maintenance,
00:17:54you tell him to get ready to put a lot of signs up there.
00:17:58Yes, sir.
00:18:00Saying what?
00:18:01What?
00:18:03How do you want the signs to read?

00:23:06What's the matter, son?
00:23:19What's the matter?
00:23:21Speak up.
00:23:22Inside.
00:23:23The water drop.
00:23:24The water drop.
00:23:54Oh, my.
00:24:01Oh, my.
00:24:07Hey, Tony.
00:24:14Sheriff, I want to talk to you.
00:24:22Sure.
00:24:23Okay, hold on.
00:24:24Be right there.
00:24:31Unit two calling unit one.
00:24:33Unit two calling unit one.
00:24:41Unit two.
00:24:42Go ahead.
00:24:43Sheriff, some ski patroller wants to talk to you.
00:24:47Yeah, what about?
00:24:49The man said murder.
00:24:51What?
00:24:53Where?
00:24:54Out at the old Fairchild place.
00:24:56I'm on my way.
00:24:58Tony, he's going to have to wait.
00:25:00Wait a minute.
00:25:21Sorry I'm late.
00:25:22How's our new superstar?
00:25:24Your grandmother decided that a living legend is just what this place needs.
00:25:28May I have some coffee, please?
00:25:32Would you like some more tea, Mrs. Hebert?
00:25:34Yes, thank you, Mr. Rill.
00:25:36Tea.
00:25:37What is it, Tony?
00:25:41Pressures.
00:25:43Comes with...
00:25:45Inheriting all this.
00:25:46I must tell you I'm very impressed.
00:25:49You really built this into something.
00:25:51Why, thank you.
00:25:52Thank you for giving Gar a job.
00:25:56That's all in our favor.
00:25:59But he told me he had a hard time getting you up here.
00:26:02How come?
00:26:03Well, I only get two weeks off a year, you know,
00:26:06and I had my heart set on a warm climate.
00:26:08Hmm.
00:26:10And I was afraid of seeing you again.
00:26:15After all this time, everything we had.
00:26:19What did you think would happen?
00:26:21I don't know.
00:26:23I've been having a lot of fantasies about you for the last year.
00:26:26Fantasies about me?
00:26:28Good or bad?
00:26:29Not bad.
00:26:32A friend of mine, a doctor, said that when a woman starts having fantasies about the man she didn't marry,
00:26:38she's not getting enough realities from the man she did.
00:26:41Hmm.
00:26:43I think your friend is talking to you about sexual realities, and you're not.
00:26:48Reality is the problem.
00:26:51You know, Tony, if I were an archaeologist or something, it wouldn't be so bad.
00:26:55But I'm a reporter.
00:26:57Television is all here and now.
00:26:59It's exciting, it's challenging, it's stimulating.
00:27:02That's where I am all day.
00:27:04Then I go home to Gar.
00:27:06And it's the winter of 68.
00:27:08That's where he is.
00:27:10How long has he been like that?
00:27:12Do you know that he hasn't been up on his ski since he won the gold medals?
00:27:17That's incredible.
00:27:20Well, maybe coming up here will change all that.
00:27:24Not his fault entirely.
00:27:2625% of the world watched him win those medals.
00:27:29The president called him.
00:27:31He was on magazine covers.
00:27:32He did television commercials.
00:27:34He was a hero for an instant.
00:27:36And whatever it takes to go back to being an ordinary mortal,
00:27:40Gar doesn't have it.
00:27:43It's really a form of paralysis.
00:27:46Well, as I see the problem, doctor, you're still in love with the man.
00:27:50Well, I could fall out of love with him.
00:27:53It'd be so much easier.
00:27:55You know, marriage can survive a lot of things.
00:27:59But it can't survive lack of respect.
00:28:03And I've lost about all the respect I ever had for him.
00:28:10I need a nap.
00:28:12Wait a minute.
00:28:14You know what you need?
00:28:16You need to have someone say he loves you.
00:28:19And I do, you know.
00:28:21I always have.
00:28:40Whatever.
00:28:58I saw that, you know.
00:29:00Kissing my wife in public.
00:29:03Hey, um...
00:29:05Guess who's been elected to crown Queen Betty Jo?
00:29:09Yours truly.
00:29:11Ta-da.
00:29:13Gar, are you still a good marksman?
00:29:17You mean on the rifle range?
00:29:19No, not necessarily.
00:29:21What do you mean?
00:29:23Okay, whatever I tell you,
00:29:25you'd have to promise me not to repeat it to anybody.
00:29:28Okay.
00:29:30You're serious, aren't you?
00:29:33Not even Ellen?
00:29:35Especially Ellen.
00:29:37Why especially Ellen?
00:29:39Because she's a news person.
00:29:44Okay.
00:29:46Tony.
00:29:51Meet me in an hour at the swimming pool, okay?
00:29:54Okay.
00:30:03You better take the boy home now, Mr. Cochran.
00:30:05I appreciate your help.
00:30:07Sure.
00:30:09Thanks, son.
00:30:35I love you.
00:30:54Something that's troubling you, Tony.
00:30:56Why don't you tell me what it is?
00:30:58You remember a news story a few months back?
00:31:02Some hikers claim that one of their party, a young girl,
00:31:05was carried off by a 12-foot hairy monster?
00:31:08Yeah, a bigfoot.
00:31:10Do you believe in such a creature?
00:31:14I really don't know.
00:31:16But, you know, they say that there are hundreds of them
00:31:19roaming around all over the country.
00:31:21Who says?
00:31:23Lots of people.
00:31:25Right after that story broke,
00:31:27Ellen did a special on the Bigfoot controversy.
00:31:29So she traveled all over the country,
00:31:31met dozens of people who supposedly had seen one of them.
00:31:34Has one of them been seen around here?
00:31:36Is that what your crisis was all about?
00:31:40Well, I saw something, Gar.
00:31:42It was monstrous.
00:31:46And it wasn't an animal.
00:31:48And it wasn't human either.
00:31:53And now you find that you're too rational and too realistic
00:31:56to allow yourself to believe it was something else.
00:31:58Is that it?
00:32:00A little bit of all that.
00:32:02And that's why you hired me to go out and...
00:32:05blow its brains out, right?
00:32:10Talk about friendship.
00:32:13You're a bit of something else.
00:32:15I didn't give you a job as a hired killer, Gar.
00:32:18Of course not.
00:32:20You were only thinking of this town that you love so very much.
00:32:23You're damn right I am.
00:32:25That thing is dangerous, Gar.
00:32:28Just because it doesn't look like you or me
00:32:30makes it a thing.
00:32:32And then it's all right to go out and kill it in cold blood, right?
00:32:35And how do you know it's dangerous?
00:32:37Everyone who's ever been in contact with one
00:32:39says exactly the same thing.
00:32:41It stares at you for a few seconds.
00:32:44And then it disappears again into the wilderness.
00:32:46Except when it feels like carrying off a young girl.
00:32:49That story turned out to be a hoax.
00:32:51I'm not talking about that story.
00:32:53I'm talking about one of our guests.
00:32:56I found her jacket the other day.
00:32:59It looked like it had been ripped off her body
00:33:01and it was bloodstained, and I believe that thing killed her.
00:33:17Have you seen my husband?
00:33:19No, Evelyn. I haven't.
00:33:27Jimmy, are you looking for me?
00:33:29No. Sheriff Paraday needs to see Tony right away.
00:33:32You have any idea where he might be?
00:33:34No, I haven't.
00:33:36Well, Ellen, it seems as if both our men are missing.
00:33:39Is something wrong?
00:33:41Nothing you want to hear about.
00:33:43And look, I gotta get right back out there.
00:33:45As soon as he shows up, will you tell him the sheriff
00:33:47wants him to come right out to the old Fairchild farm?
00:33:56Mmm-hmm.
00:34:26Sheriff, I went out to the Rill Lodge.
00:34:48They don't know where Tony is.
00:34:49I talked to Mrs. Rill.
00:34:51Told her as soon as he shows up, send him out here right away.
00:34:53You make anything of this?
00:35:54Amazing.
00:35:56Yeah, really.
00:36:53Tony, I thought I saw something up there.
00:37:05Where?
00:37:15Come on, we gotta get to the barn.
00:37:17The sheriff's waiting for us.
00:37:46Come on.
00:38:15Hi, Cole.
00:38:24I got here as fast as I could.
00:38:27Scar Seberg, our new ski school director.
00:38:29Sheriff Paraday.
00:38:30What's up?
00:38:31Well, I think we found that missing girl.
00:38:33Where?
00:38:34Cochran's boy found her inside, dead.
00:38:40I understand she was a guest at the lodge.
00:38:42I was hoping you could help me identify her.
00:38:44Well, I must have seen her somewhere.
00:38:46Maybe I'll recognize her when I see her face.
00:38:51She doesn't have one.
00:39:21It's pretty obvious she wasn't murdered.
00:39:37Only human beings commit murder,
00:39:39and whatever did that wasn't even halfway human.
00:39:43What do you think, Tony?
00:39:45Can you help me?
00:39:46Is that her?
00:39:47Yes, sir.
00:39:50What do you base that on?
00:39:53Color of her suit.
00:39:56Well, how would you know the color of her clothes?
00:39:59It matches the jacket I found.
00:40:01You found the jacket where?
00:40:03On the north slope.
00:40:04We were looking for her up there yesterday.
00:40:07Her friend thought she might have had an accident.
00:40:09So the patrollers told me,
00:40:10but they didn't say anything about a jacket.
00:40:12We spread out in different directions, Cole.
00:40:14But you came together again.
00:40:16That's right.
00:40:17So why didn't you show them the jacket?
00:40:20What?
00:40:21Why didn't you show them the jacket, Tony?
00:40:24I left it where I found it.
00:40:27As a marker.
00:40:32Is that what you wanted to talk to me about?
00:40:37That's right.
00:40:39I wanted to see you about it first.
00:40:42I didn't want to put the town in a panic.
00:40:46And what about this stuff, uh,
00:40:48Heidi told the patrol about a monster?
00:40:52Heidi only saw the footprints.
00:40:55I saw the thing itself.
00:40:59All right, tell me about it.
00:41:32Well, I can certainly understand your grandmother
00:41:56not wanting any of this to get out.
00:41:58You know, she may be right about it being a grizzly.
00:42:01Winter attacks are not all that rare, you know.
00:42:03Cole, it's not a grizzly.
00:42:06What do you think it is?
00:42:08Garth thinks it's one of those legendary creatures
00:42:11called Bigfoot.
00:42:14That's right.
00:42:16The legends I've heard about Bigfoot
00:42:19put him pretty firmly in the Pacific Northwest.
00:42:23Not necessarily, Garth.
00:42:26Ellen tells me there,
00:42:27there are hundreds of them
00:42:29roaming around all over the country.
00:42:31Ellen?
00:42:32Oh, my wife.
00:42:35She's a TV journalist.
00:42:37And a while back,
00:42:38she did a special on the Bigfoot controversy.
00:42:41Did they settle anything?
00:42:43Nah, not what you, a sheriff,
00:42:46would consider hard evidence.
00:42:48But she did run across a couple of interesting points.
00:42:50She went up to Washington State
00:42:52and met with an anthropologist.
00:42:54He showed her, oh, I think she said
00:42:57150 photographs.
00:42:59Random footprints of so-called Bigfoots.
00:43:04Now, if you want to know more about it,
00:43:09I suggest you go and talk to Ellen.
00:43:28Whatever did that to that girl,
00:43:31the less people it'd get in its way,
00:43:34the more it was going to stay alive.
00:43:36Right.
00:43:38So we're going to say that the girl
00:43:41was mauled to death by a crazed grizzly
00:43:43out of hibernation.
00:43:45Now, if you want to know more about it,
00:43:48I suggest you go and talk to Ellen.
00:43:50She's an anthropologist.
00:43:53Mauled to death by a crazed grizzly
00:43:55out of hibernation.
00:43:57That's the story I'd like for you
00:43:59to tell your wife, Mr. Seberg.
00:44:01All right, Sheriff, I will.
00:44:03For now, that is.
00:44:08Tomorrow morning, when it gets daylight,
00:44:11I'd like for the three of us to sneak out here,
00:44:15track that thing down, and kill it.
00:44:19We just lost Mr. Seberg.
00:44:22No, you didn't, Sheriff.
00:44:25Whatever did that to that girl in there
00:44:28has got to be destroyed.
00:44:31Fine.
00:44:33Okay.
00:44:53♪♪
00:45:03♪♪
00:45:13♪♪
00:45:23♪♪
00:45:33♪♪
00:45:43♪♪
00:45:53♪♪
00:46:03♪♪
00:46:11She wasn't even 20.
00:46:13To think that something like that could happen to her.
00:46:15Mauled to death by a grizzly
00:46:17and in the dead of winter.
00:46:19Come on, Doug, you can't believe that.
00:46:21Something else happened to that girl.
00:46:23Personally, I'm scared.
00:46:25Where in the world have you been?
00:46:27We've been calling all over town for you.
00:46:29What? What's wrong?
00:46:31I was at the school auditorium over an hour ago.
00:46:33Oh.
00:46:35Tony, will you go to the airport?
00:46:38I had to notify that poor girl's parents.
00:46:40They're due in any minute.
00:46:42What'd you tell them, Grandma?
00:46:44Nothing, except that you'd be there to meet them.
00:46:48Come on.
00:46:50♪♪
00:47:00♪♪
00:47:10♪♪
00:47:20♪♪
00:47:30♪♪
00:47:40Hi, girls.
00:47:42Oh, I'm sorry.
00:47:44Hi, Betty Jo.
00:47:46Oh, Betty Jo, smile.
00:47:48I am trying to smile,
00:47:50but I keep imagining how that poor girl...
00:47:52Betty Jo, it's carnival time,
00:47:55and you're the queen.
00:47:57♪♪
00:48:07♪♪
00:48:17♪♪
00:48:27♪♪
00:48:37♪♪
00:48:47♪♪
00:48:57♪♪
00:49:07♪♪
00:49:12Are you all right?
00:49:14Did you see it? Did you see it?
00:49:17♪♪
00:49:22♪♪
00:49:29The ground!
00:49:31The ground!
00:49:33Papa-
00:49:43Papa!
00:49:51Papa!
00:49:51Papa!
00:49:57Papa!
00:50:00Papa!
00:50:02What a mess.
00:50:04How are we going to write this one up?
00:50:06I don't know.
00:50:20Gar.
00:50:22What?
00:50:24Please don't tell me. I'm sorry.
00:50:26He was right. I should have let him report it.
00:50:28But we had to have our winter carnival.
00:50:30It was our 50th.
00:50:32I guarantee you.
00:50:34It'll continue for the next 50 years.
00:50:36Now you take care of yourself, all right?
00:50:38And I'll take care of this one.
00:50:40Take care.
00:51:00All right.
00:51:14Still can't get a hold of Tony.
00:51:16Seems to be a lot of hysteria back at the lodge.
00:51:18Bad news travels fast.
00:51:20You better let me drive you back, Mr. Seberg.
00:51:22Don't worry about the car.
00:51:24I'll have one of my deputies take care of it.
00:51:26Your wife's probably worrying about you.
00:51:28She sure picked a bad time to go to work for real lodge.
00:51:30Yep.
00:51:32What are you going to do next?
00:51:34Well, as soon as it's daylight,
00:51:36I'm going to get out there
00:51:38and see if I can't track that thing down.
00:51:40I'd like to come along with you,
00:51:42if you don't mind.
00:51:44Well, Tony says you're a crack shot.
00:51:46Sure.
00:51:48By the way,
00:51:50did you teach your wife to ski like that?
00:51:52Like what?
00:51:54When did you ever see her ski?
00:51:56Well, she followed us clear out to the barn.
00:51:58I saw her up in the hills watching us.
00:52:00Then I guess she turned around and headed back.
00:52:02Mm-hmm.
00:52:04I wonder how she found out
00:52:06there was something going on.
00:52:08Well, sir, I was wondering the same thing
00:52:10till I found out she was a lady reporter.
00:52:12Yeah.
00:52:14My deputy figures that she overheard him
00:52:16telling Mrs. Rill to send Tony out there,
00:52:18and I guess something in the way he said it
00:52:20must have tweaked her nose for news.
00:52:22Right.
00:52:24At any rate,
00:52:26let's hope that by this time tomorrow night
00:52:28we'll have an end to this story for her.
00:52:46Hey, Billy.
00:52:48My wife. Have you seen my wife?
00:52:50Not since this afternoon.
00:52:52Excuse me, Mr. Seberg,
00:52:54but I got to check that couple out.
00:52:56They'll walk right out without a pant.
00:52:58Okay. All right. I understand.
00:53:00Now, you saw my wife this afternoon.
00:53:02Did you see her come back?
00:53:04No.
00:53:22Mm-hmm.

00:56:55Oh.
00:56:56Oh.
00:56:57Oh.
00:57:05Gar?
00:57:07Yeah?
00:57:08I'm proud of you.
00:57:11I'm sorry I let us drift so far apart.
00:57:13Well, we both kind of let that happen.
00:57:17I should have been there when you needed me all these years.
00:57:23You finally were.
00:57:25I was?
00:57:27Sure.
00:57:30If you hadn't gotten lost, I would never have had good enough reason to get back on my skis again.
00:57:35How was it?
00:57:38I stood on top of this mountain,
00:57:42looked down,
00:57:46and I saw myself, instead of flying down,
00:57:50I was falling down,
00:57:52completely out of control.
00:57:56But once I got skiing,
00:57:58it was great.
00:58:01It was really great, Ellen.
00:58:04It was really great, Ellen.
00:58:07I should have told you a long time ago why I never skied after 68.
00:58:12I think it's because I saw too many champions become has-beens.
00:58:18I didn't want to be a has-been.
00:58:26So I figured
00:58:30that by not skiing anymore,
00:58:34I'd stay on top.
00:58:38But I didn't.
00:58:41Those things don't happen that way.
00:58:48They don't.
00:58:50I've been such a fool, Ellen.
00:58:52Oh, not a fool, my love.
00:58:55We're all afraid of failing.
00:58:57No.
00:59:00Not you.
00:59:01Oh, yes, me.
00:59:03I never knew that.
00:59:05I never showed you.
00:59:07Have you been keeping things from me?
00:59:11No. Will you kiss me?
00:59:14I thought you'd never ask.
00:59:27I thought you'd never ask.
00:59:45This is Budd, sheriff.
00:59:47We've checked the north slope for Mr. and Mrs. Seberg.
00:59:50No sign of anyone or anything in his area.
00:59:57I don't know what you're talking about.
00:59:59I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:01I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:03I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:05I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:07I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:09I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:11I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:13I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:15I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:17I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:19I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:21I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:23I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:25I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:27I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:48I love you.
01:00:53You sure you want to go home?
01:00:54Huh?
01:00:59Ah!
01:01:00Ah!
01:01:01Ow!
01:01:02Ah!
01:01:03Ah!
01:01:04Ah!
01:01:05Ah!
01:01:06Ah!
01:01:07Ah!
01:01:08Ah!
01:01:09Ah!
01:01:10Ah!
01:01:11Ah!
01:01:12Ah!
01:01:13Ah!
01:01:14Ah!
01:01:15Ah!
01:01:16Ah!
01:01:17Ah!
01:01:18Oh!
01:01:19Ah!
01:01:20Ah!
01:01:21Ah!
01:01:22Come on.
01:01:23Come on.
01:01:24Come on, come on.
01:01:39Come on, come on.
01:01:54No!
01:02:09I'm gonna check the barn, Cole.
01:02:17Tony? Wait a minute.
01:02:20Up there on the hill.
01:02:22Well, no, it's gone, but I saw it. I swear.
01:02:25We're gonna have to go back over the bridge and turn around to get over there.
01:02:34Wait! Hey, Tony!
01:02:37Wait!
01:02:43God!
01:02:45Tony! Oh, Tony!
01:02:48You okay? We're all right.
01:02:51He's definitely up there looking for it right now.
01:03:21No!
01:03:31And so we have gathered to pay our last respects to Mrs. Smith.
01:03:35We pray this will be a time of strength for Mr. and Mrs. Smith,
01:03:40as well as the rest of us here today.
01:03:42Let us all pause for a moment of reflection,
01:03:45silent homage to Buster Smith.
01:03:52SILENT HOMAGE TO BUSTER SMITH
01:04:05Ready. Aim. Fire.
01:04:22SILENT HOMAGE TO BUSTER SMITH
01:04:35I told the sheriff I was gonna catch up with him.
01:04:37Guess you two better get some sleep, huh?
01:04:39No. I'll go with you.
01:04:42After the night you've been through?
01:04:44Sure.
01:04:45Firm asleep when you come in. Wake me up.
01:04:49We got it!
01:04:50The sheriff himself shot it right between the eyes.
01:04:53We're bringing it in.
01:05:18I couldn't believe one of those things would be out in the winter.
01:05:20Yeah, I'm amazed.
01:05:21Well, there's some shot, huh?
01:05:48SILENT HOMAGE TO BUSTER SMITH
01:06:12Whoa!
01:06:13What's the secret, huh?
01:06:14The only thing is it's a lodge.
01:06:16Okay.
01:06:18Do you mind if I ask you a yes or no question?
01:06:22Well, that all depends.
01:06:24As a friend?
01:06:25Pardon?
01:06:27More as a time saver, though.
01:06:29Because if your answer is yes, there's no sense in us talking.
01:06:34Did you know you were killing the wrong thing?
01:06:39All I know for sure, Mr. Seberg, is that, uh...
01:06:43Something came charging out of that brush at me,
01:06:46and it wasn't human.
01:06:49Are you that sure that it was the wrong thing?
01:06:52Well, I don't know, but it seems to me that the best way to find out
01:06:56is to cut it open and see what's inside.
01:06:58Look, Sheriff.
01:07:00If the people of this town are in danger,
01:07:02don't you think it's your responsibility to warn them?
01:07:05Even if it means calling off the winter carnival.
01:07:09Look, Mrs. Seberg, uh...
01:07:12What is it that I'm gonna warn the people against?
01:07:15Uh, a man-beast legend
01:07:18whose very existence is hotly disputed.
01:07:21Disputed by whom?
01:07:22Well, by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, for one.
01:07:26I wouldn't know this, but I talked to Washington this morning,
01:07:29and they said that they don't have one piece of evidence,
01:07:33nothing they've seen or heard
01:07:35that would stand up on their scientific scrutiny, unquote.
01:07:38Now, is that what you want me to warn the people against?
01:07:41Do you honestly expect them to believe it?
01:07:44Now, an unseasonal bear is one thing,
01:07:48but a legend is...
01:07:50Well, just that, a legend.
01:07:52Bigfoot has been sighted in the Northwest for the last 150 years.
01:07:56There are verified recordings of attacks.
01:07:59I had a man on my television show just recently
01:08:01who swears he threw a rock at one and it ran away.
01:08:05But I don't think what we've seen is Bigfoot.
01:08:08I don't think it's as simple as that.
01:08:10I agree.
01:08:12There have been enough happenings around here.
01:08:14All it takes is one person who doesn't believe it was a bear,
01:08:18and you'll have a stampede on your hands.
01:08:20That's just the point.
01:08:22I don't want these hills full of people shooting at each other.
01:08:26Now, you don't believe it was that bear, do you?
01:08:29No, it was not a bear.
01:08:32What do you think it was?
01:08:33I don't know.
01:08:35A mutant of some kind.
01:08:37Maybe it's leftover from the last ice age.
01:08:39I don't know.
01:08:40Whatever it is, it's still out there.
01:08:42And it's a killer.
01:08:44What do you suggest we do?
01:08:46What you told my husband we should do in the first place.
01:08:49But this time, let's really do it.
01:08:51That's right.
01:08:53And you can count on me, Sharon.
01:08:56What you're saying is you want us to go up there,
01:08:59just the two of us, and destroy this thing.
01:09:02That's right.
01:09:03Just the three of us.
01:09:08Just the four of us.
01:09:10Everybody ready?
01:09:37Let's go.
01:10:07Let's go.
01:10:37Let's go.
01:11:07Let's go.
01:11:37Let's go.
01:12:07Let's go.
01:12:09Let's go.
01:12:38Hold.
01:12:40I think we should call it a day and head back for the camper.
01:13:07Let's go.
01:13:08Let's go.
01:13:09Let's go.
01:13:10Let's go.
01:13:11Let's go.
01:13:12Let's go.
01:13:13Let's go.
01:13:14Let's go.
01:13:15Let's go.
01:13:16Let's go.
01:13:17Let's go.
01:13:18Let's go.
01:13:19Let's go.
01:13:20Let's go.
01:13:21Let's go.
01:13:22Let's go.
01:13:23Let's go.

01:13:41Let's go.
01:13:42Let's go.
01:13:43Let's go.
01:13:44Let's go.
01:13:45Let's go.
01:13:46Let's go.
01:13:47Let's go.
01:13:48Let's go.
01:13:49Let's go.
01:13:50Let's go.
01:13:51Let's go.
01:13:52Let's go.
01:13:53Let's go.
01:13:54Let's go.
01:13:55Let's go.
01:13:56Let's go.
01:13:57Let's go.
01:13:58Let's go.
01:13:59Let's go.
01:14:00Let's go.
01:14:01Let's go.
01:14:02Let's go.
01:14:03Let's go.
01:14:04Let's go.
01:14:05Let's go.
01:14:06Let's go.
01:14:07Let's go.
01:14:08Let's go.
01:14:09Let's go.
01:14:10Let's go.
01:14:11Let's go.
01:14:12Let's go.
01:14:13Let's go.
01:14:14Let's go.
01:14:15Let's go.
01:14:16Let's go.
01:14:17Let's go.
01:14:18Let's go.
01:14:19Let's go.
01:14:20Let's go.
01:14:21Let's go.
01:14:22Let's go.
01:14:23Let's go.
01:14:24Let's go.
01:14:25Let's go.
01:14:26Let's go.
01:14:27Let's go.
01:14:28Let's go.
01:14:29Let's go.
01:14:30Let's go.
01:14:31Let's go.
01:14:32Let's go.
01:14:33Let's go.
01:14:35Maybe we ought to move camp.
01:14:36No.
01:14:37We're going to stay right here, settle down and wait for him.
01:14:40Isn't that better than cruising around on the off chance that we might sight him?
01:14:44He's got a point.
01:14:46Well, will have to keep watch all night.
01:14:48Two at a time.
01:14:53I said the four of us, didn't I?
01:14:55You did.
01:14:56Look you two go first.
01:14:58I'll make dinner.
01:14:59Tony.
01:15:00OK, will you hold Evelyn?
01:15:04You're bluer, you know.
01:15:24What?
01:15:25Your eyes.
01:15:26Can I ask you a question that's been following me around for a long time?
01:15:33Yeah.
01:15:34Why did you decide against me?
01:15:38I didn't decide against you, Tony.
01:15:41I decided for Gar.
01:15:42I loved you both, you know.
01:15:43But he needed me.
01:15:44And I didn't.
01:15:50But it's okay, huh?
01:15:53You've just answered an eight-year-old question.
01:15:58Friends?
01:15:59Friends.
01:16:00Always.
01:16:02Always.
01:16:23It's our watch, gentlemen.
01:16:25I made some dinner.
01:16:26It's on the table for you.
01:16:27All right.
01:16:28Sounds great.
01:17:01Good morning.
01:17:17Good morning.
01:17:48Let's get out of here.
01:17:50We have no other choice now.
01:17:52That's the bro who shot me.
01:18:03Good morning.
01:18:04Come on down.
01:18:05Come on down.
01:18:06Good morning.
01:18:07Come on down.
01:18:09Come on down.
01:18:10Come on down.
01:18:11Come on down.
01:18:12Come on down.
01:18:14Come on down.
01:18:15Whoa!
01:18:17I just slowed down, it's not chasing us anymore.
01:18:47Got what it wants.
01:18:50Well, he's no longer killing just to eat.
01:18:53That last attack wasn't mindless.
01:18:55That was a planned counterattack.
01:18:58We're not going to get very far walking.
01:19:01The barn's down here, let's head for it.
01:19:04Hey, Tony, that's not a very good idea.
01:19:07Why not?
01:19:08Because that's where he's been stashing his food.
01:19:11Can you imagine us being there when he shows up?
01:19:14It's already lost two from there.
01:19:16If he's as smart as you think he is, he won't come back to the barn again.
01:19:20Let's go.
01:20:14Hey, Tony, where are you going?
01:20:23There's three sets of skis and three rifles back up at that camper.
01:20:26Why don't you stay with Ellen? There's no sense in all of this risk in our lives.
01:20:29Hold on.
01:20:33We decided we would stay together until this thing was over. Remember?
01:20:36Yeah. We're more vulnerable if we split up.
01:20:40Okay, let's go.
01:21:08This new snow is just going to make everything more difficult for us.
01:21:11Yeah, but a lot easier for it.
01:21:16Okay.
01:21:43Wait a second.
01:21:45Where were your rifles when the camper turned over?
01:21:47By the side of it.
01:21:49But the extra rifles were inside, weren't they?
01:21:52Yeah.
01:21:53Okay, now, if I pull the logs out, will you go in and get them?
01:21:56Tony, come here.
01:22:22Ellen, can you see the rifles?
01:22:24No.
01:22:25Where can you find anything?
01:22:28There's some skis.
01:22:30Oh, great. Throw them up.
01:22:31Okay.
01:22:34Hey, there should be a service revolver in the cab.
01:22:48Ellen, look in the closet. The rifles might be there.
01:22:52All right.
01:23:10Tony, look.
01:23:12I found a gun.
01:23:14What is it?
01:23:18Got to hit him!
01:23:25Gar, finish him!
01:23:33Get the rifles, Ellen, and the other skis.
01:23:36Okay.
01:24:05All right.
01:24:34All right.
01:25:03All right.
01:25:32All right.
