Expulsé de son lycée à cause de son comportement, Igby décide de tout abandonner et d'aller vivre chez son beau-père, DH, qui habite à New York avec Rachel, sa fiancée. Dans la métropole, le jeune homme tombe amoureux de Sookie, une fille excentrique et marginale. Peu à peu, entre ces personnalités aux caractères bien trempés, naît une attirance qui se transforme en amour, rendant à Igby le goût de la vie....
