In this video, we take a look inside the bag of Spain's Sergio Garcia! The leading point scorer for Europe in the Ryder Cup was kind enough to give us a quick tour through his bag during the LIV Golf UK event in July, where he now plies his trade as captain of the Fireballs team.
Transcript
00:00Right, we are here at the JCB Golf and Country Club
00:03for the Live Golf UK event,
00:04and I've got Sergio Garcia with me.
00:06What a pleasure.
00:07And we're gonna go through your bag in just a second.
00:09First of all, you're a contract-free agent now,
00:12so I've known you as a Titleist player, a Callaway player,
00:14TaylorMade player over the years,
00:16and now you've got the freedom
00:17to build whatever bag you want.
00:19How have you found that?
00:20Yeah, no, it's obviously, I mean,
00:22I still have a great relationship with TaylorMade,
00:25I mean, with other companies,
00:26but I played so many years with TaylorMade,
00:29so my bag is predominantly TaylorMade at the moment.
00:32But yeah, no, they take good care of me,
00:34so that's good.
00:35It looks like they do take good care of you.
00:37So starting with the driver,
00:38we're in the QI10 Max from TaylorMade.
00:40So that was the big story about their release,
00:43huge MOI numbers, 10K of inertia.
00:45How have you found that?
00:46Why have you ended up in the Max model?
00:48I tried the LS, and it was good,
00:51but I felt like this one,
00:53even though probably I don't hit it quite as far,
00:55I feel like it's super easy to hit,
00:57so it's giving me a lot of confidence.
00:59And at the end of the day, for me,
00:59if I have confidence,
01:00I feel like I can swing a little harder,
01:02and at the end of the day, I don't lose that much distance,
01:04but more than anything, it feels very easy club to hit.
01:06Have you done anything internally with hot melt
01:09or anything?
01:09You're not a spinny driver, I found in testing.
01:11Yeah, no, I mean, I'm fine.
01:15Like, what I've done is I'm playing at a much lower lock
01:18than I usually do.
01:19So I have it, it's a nine degree,
01:21I have it probably like at eight,
01:23maybe just under eight.
01:26So that obviously brings the spin down for me a little bit,
01:29but I like the way it comes out, so.
01:31Perfect.
01:32And then we've got one of my favorites here,
01:33the new mini driver from Sailor Maiden,
01:34the copper version.
01:35Have you found that, and why have we ended up there?
01:36Yeah, I just got it.
01:38I just got it this week, I've been wanting to try it,
01:40and I'm putting it in play for the first time, so.
01:45We'll find out.
01:45Yeah, so we'll see how it goes, but yeah.
01:48I was watching you hit a couple, it looked pretty good.
01:49It feels good, yeah, it's good.
01:51And then we go from there down into Firewood,
01:52QA10 Tour, and we have Ventus Black throughout here.
01:56Yes.
01:578X, and we're sending weight, so you just-
01:58876, yeah.
01:59Perfect, so you just like to keep a constant feel
02:00at that top end of the bag?
02:02Yes, I like to keep the same shafts as much as possible.
02:07Obviously, on the irons, I have the LA shafts,
02:11the LA Gulf shafts, but on the woods,
02:13I have all the Ventus,
02:14and I don't like to have too many different,
02:16so I just kind of keep the same feeling.
02:18On the LA Gulf shafts,
02:20I've seen so many people in the bag
02:22at this LIV event, more so than I've seen at other events
02:24with the LA Gulf, is that, what's the deal there?
02:26We've got reps on LIV that are pushing
02:29that LA Gulf shaft more, or you just found yourself in it?
02:31Not really, I found myself in it.
02:33I tried it last year in Orlando, I remember.
02:36I think it was kind of beginning of last year,
02:38and it felt really, really good,
02:41so because of that, I decided to put it
02:44in every single club, in every single iron,
02:46and I'm very happy with it.
02:48Really stable, right?
02:49Yes, very, very stable.
02:50Perfect, so we're in P770 in the 3-iron,
02:53into the blades, into the P7MBs,
02:56so just presumably in the 3-iron
02:57for a bit more forgiveness, a bit more pop?
02:59Yeah, just a little bit, like you said,
03:01a little bit more pop, a little bit easier
03:03to hit than a normal 3-iron,
03:04and I can use it kind of like a driving iron kind of stuff.
03:07Perfect, 3-wedge setup, stock pitching wedge,
03:1054, bent to 52, I see.
03:12Yes.
03:12And then 58 T-grind.
03:14Skip over the others, get to T-grind.
03:16I see so many people in that T-grind, what is it?
03:19Well, funny enough, I have a funny story about that
03:22because obviously I, my first three years on tour,
03:26I was with Tyliss, and obviously I was starting
03:28using Tyliss wedges, then I went to Telemate,
03:30and I switched to Telemate wedges,
03:32and I remember in 2020 when I became a free agent again,
03:37I was like, you know, I wanna get back
03:38to the bulky wedges, and Aaron Drill from Tyliss,
03:44I talked to him, and he said,
03:45well, I'm gonna send you a couple,
03:47and then I'm gonna send you one,
03:48I just want you to try it.
03:49So he sent me, I think it was like a 10-degree bounce,
03:53eight-degree bounce, and he sent me the T-grind,
03:56which is four-degree bounce, and I tried it,
04:00and I loved it from the beginning.
04:01I was like, ooh, this feels really, really good.
04:03So then I talked to him, and I said,
04:05I really like the T-grind.
04:07I said, well, funny enough, that's the grind
04:09that you were using when you were with us
04:11in like 99, 2000, 2001.
04:13So it's kind of a retro without realizing it.
04:15That's really cool.
04:16But there's so many people.
04:18Scott, you should have every What's in the Bag I do
04:19on our podcast.
04:20So many people in T-grind, so that's really interesting.
04:23Putter, now this is a throwback to me, never compromised.
04:26So this was a brand from my youth.
04:28I know.
04:29Thoughts here?
04:30Well, there's a couple of things.
04:32So obviously, Goldfire, the Swiss brand
04:36that I was using at the beginning of the year,
04:38the carbon fiber one, they're making me
04:40a smaller version of it.
04:42I really like it, but they're making me a smaller version,
04:44so it takes a few months to do it.
04:46So with Bobby Dean, a guy that I work with,
04:50my putting in Austin, I wanted to find a putter
04:54that hit the ball hard.
04:55So then, usually my problem with putting is
04:59if I feel like I have to hit the ball,
05:01then I get out of rhythm.
05:02So I wanted something that came out fast, yeah.
05:05And we tested a few until I get my,
05:08obviously my Goldfire one.
05:10And this one was the one that felt and reacted the best.
05:13And it's been good for the last three months or so
05:16that I've been using it.
05:17Okay, brilliant.
05:18And what ball are you in, Sergio?
05:19The TP5X.
05:20Yeah, the new one, yeah.
05:22I've done a lot of testing with that myself
05:24when I'm in that, it's brilliant.
05:24Which I like it because I'm always been a TP5 player,
05:30the black one, always.
05:33But this one, this X, feels like it spins
05:36a little bit more for me,
05:37so it allows me to hit more shots.
05:40Cool.
05:41Any go-to training aids you have in the bag
05:42that you always go with?
05:43Not really.
05:44A training aid guy?
05:45Cool.
05:46Old school.
05:46Old school.
05:47Love it.
05:48Sergio Garcia, that was brilliant.
05:49Thank you very much.
05:50Play well this week.
05:51Thanks.
