00:12overriding any custom, any law, which seeks to discriminate against women.

00:30We are in our democracy, 75 years late in providing equal rights to men and women to

00:57enter into matrimony.

01:27Today, for the first time, through this amendment, both men and women, at the age of 21, can

01:45see their rights and take their own decisions on marriage.

01:52To say that if a woman is not educated, she will not be able to know her rights, nor will

02:03she be able to use those rights, is an insult to the women of this country.

02:14Today, in front of this assembly, I would like to say that from 2015 to 2020, the number

02:28of child marriages in our country has been stopped by 20 lakhs.

03:01That this house cannot be witness to that disrespect to women, is my contention today.

03:33But it would be right to say that the voices that were raised today, have accepted that

03:43marriage should be uniformly applicable across all religions, all castes, all creeds, overriding

03:54any custom, any law, which seeks to discriminate against women.

04:01So those men who stood in this house, in support of uniformity, in applicability of the law,

04:09have my gratitude.

04:11And sir, on behalf of the government, I would request that it be sent to the standing committee.

04:20Our Prime Minister has given his blessing to this proposal, that there should be no discrimination

04:28against any woman in this country.

05:01welcome them, and I would like to appeal to the assembly, with humility, to let me introduce

05:07this proposal.
