Rihanna Officially Becomes A National Hero

Rihanna’s homeland gave her a special honour on the day it became the world’s newest republic.

00:00On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people,

00:05we therefore present to you the designee for National Hero of Barbados,

00:12Ambassador Robin Rihanna Fenty.

00:15May you continue to shine like a diamond.

00:30It is with distinct honor tonight that I announce

00:57that pursuant to Chapter 399 of the Laws of Barbados,

01:03the Order of National Heroes Act,

01:08that my government will and has taken the decision

01:14to recognize that among us,

01:17there are persons to whom the eligibility criteria

01:22as set out in Section 8 of that Act

01:26and the schedule is entirely applicable.

01:31We asked the people of Barbados to nominate persons

01:37and many nominations came

01:40and we will do the remaining ones by the National Heroes Day of 2022.

01:49But it is the judgment of this government

01:53that it is appropriate to signal to the world tonight

01:58that just as within one mile of this space from Bridgetown,

02:04there is a National Hero by the name of the Right Excellence,

02:07Sir Garfield St. Aubin Sobers,

02:11born of humble origins,

02:13but capable of capturing the imagination of the world

02:17by being the greatest of all time in cricket,

02:21that we too have on the other side of Bridgetown,

02:25born less than one mile from here too

02:30and literally from humble origins,

02:35catching a ZR to Commonware School.

02:44But above all else,

02:47commanding the imagination of the world

02:51through the pursuit of excellence,

02:54with her creativity, her discipline,

02:58and above all else,

03:00her extraordinary commitment to the land of her birth.

03:05Pursuant to Clause B of the schedule

03:09and having satisfied that Ambassador Robin Rianna Fenty

03:15has given service to Barbados,

03:17which has been exemplified by visionary and pioneering leadership,

03:22extraordinary achievement,

03:24and the attainment of the highest excellence

03:27that is redounded to the honor of Barbados,

03:30my government has the distinct honor

03:33of recommending to the president

03:36who has kindly and graciously accepted

03:39that Ambassador Robin Rianna Fenty tomorrow morning

03:43shall have conferred upon her

03:46the order of National Hero of Barbados.

03:50I ask you to please come and stand

03:54and to accept on behalf of a grateful nation.

03:59You can come, my dear.

04:09the designee for National Hero of Barbados,
