Billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates surprisingly said he didn't think vaccine makers should share their formulas with other countries, citing safety risks.

00:30Well, there's only so many vaccine factories in the world, and people are very serious

00:59about the safety of vaccines.

01:02And so moving something that had never been done, moving a vaccine from, say, a J&J factory

01:10into a factory in India, it's novel.

01:13It's only because of our grants and our expertise that can happen at all.

01:18The thing that's holding things back in this case is not intellectual property.

01:22There's not like some idle vaccine factory with regulatory approval that makes magically

01:27safe vaccines.

01:29You've got to do the trials on these things and every manufacturing process has to be

01:34looked at in a very careful way.

01:39There's all sorts of issues around intellectual property having to do with medicines, but

01:42not in terms of how quickly we've been able to ramp up the volume here.

01:48You know, I remember how shocked people were when we said we were going to do second sources

01:52in these developing country factories.

01:56You know, that was a novel thing.

01:58We got all the rights from the vaccine companies.

02:00They didn't hold it back.

02:01They were participating.

02:03I do a regular phone call with the pharmaceutical CEOs to make sure that work is going at full
