00:00If you're a resident of Karnataka, there's news for you.
00:03Milk prices have been hiked again in Karnataka by 4 rupees now.
00:07Nandini milk prices going up again.
00:09Sidharmaya government gives an approval to another price hike, barely weeks after that
00:14had happened.
00:15Nandini milk, toned milk here, for example, has gone from 42 rupees per litre to 46 rupees
00:22per litre.
00:23Homogenized toned milk, for example, has gone from 43 rupees per litre to 47.
00:28So there are, of course, these different categories and almost in all categories, 4 rupees per
00:34litre has been the increase.
00:37Even for curd, which means it's not just milk but dairy products otherwise as well.
00:42In curd, 50 rupees earlier per litre, that was the amount, 54 litres per litre.
00:48Remember, items like milk are often essential items as well for many families and households.
00:55Our editor Nagarjun Dwarkanath is joining me for the latest on this.
00:58Nagarjun, tell me more about this because I remember barely a few weeks ago there was
01:02this increase that had been done.
01:05What is the reason?
01:06What is the government saying about it?
01:07And do you think this may impact the common man on the ground?
01:10Well, definitely the common man will be burdened with the increase in milk prices, especially
01:16the Nandini milk prices.
01:1790% of Karnataka uses the Nandini milk packets every morning and thousands of crores of litres
01:23of milk is used every day across the state and Karnataka Milk Federation has complete
01:28monopoly in terms of milk marketing and supply for the whole state because the brand is so
01:33good.
01:34The whole state depends on the Karnataka Milk Federation to deliver their morning milk and
01:38evening chai as well.
01:39Considering it's an independent body, but however, there's always an excess between
01:43the government and the federation because usually the politicians end up becoming the
01:47chairman in an election and they have, of course, an excess with the government as well.
01:51And now, this time around, the ministry has announced a Rs.4 hike in milk and curd prices
01:57across Karnataka.
01:59This is not the first time in the last 20 months successfully the government has been
02:02increasing the milk product prices, especially the milk and the curd of Nandini products.
02:07But what the defense of the government is that this price rise will directly benefit
02:12the farmers in the rural sector.
02:13Whoever gives milk to the federation in the rural sectors in villages, the complete Rs.4
02:19will be transferred to them as subsidies, what we are told.
02:21So the consumers, however, will be burdened, but the money will be directly delivered to
02:25the farmers.
02:26That's the defense from the government.
02:27Nagarjun will be tracking all the latest on that.
02:30Remember that Rs.4 may seem like a small amount, but when you have to buy these items on a
02:36daily basis for big households, it can burden and empty the pockets, especially of the middle
02:41class families.
02:42Does the government have a way out to ensure that people find some relief as well in the
02:46days to come?
