00:00Let's start by talking about those clashes that we saw leading up to the weekend and

00:05during the weekend, clashes between gunmen and security forces.

00:09What's your understanding as to what caused this flare up in violence?

00:13Well, Tom, it looks like there was elements of the former Assad regime's security forces

00:21that attacked the interim government, if you will, forces and caused this to start.

00:27It didn't end with that.

00:29It appears by most reports that it resulted in over 1,300 deaths, many of which, if not

00:37most of which, were civilians.

00:39There's a lot of very graphic, disturbing videos that have been posted to social media.

00:44It's really, of course, gotten not only the country and the region, but the world concerned

00:49about just what direction Syria is going.

00:51It's already started a refugee flow again, leaving Syria, going into Lebanon, for example.

00:58It's something that it's going to be looked at very closely in the UN and potentially

01:03in these regional meetings that are discussing the matter.
