Jane, even though we somehow get to call you our colleague, you are absolutely right.
00:29
You are absolutely peerless.
00:31
It's my honor to present the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award to you, the sublime Jane Fonda.
00:38
Wow. Wow.
01:04
This means the world to me.
01:06
What about the sound system?
01:08
I'm going to talk loud.
01:10
This means the world to me.
01:13
You can't know.
01:14
Thank you, SAG-AFTRA.
01:18
Wow, and your enthusiasm makes this seem, I don't know, less like a late twilight of my life and more like a go-girl kick-ass.
01:32
Which is good, because I'm not done.
01:40
You know, I have had a really weird career.
01:46
Totally not, as my agents there at that table will testify to, totally unstrategic.
01:52
I retired for 15 years, and then I came back at 65, which is not usual.
01:59
I made one of my most successful movies in my 80s, and probably in my 90s I'll be doing my own stunts in an action movie.
02:12
Have you ever heard the phrase, how does it go?
02:16
Yeah, it's okay to be a late bloomer as long as you don't miss the flower show.
02:22
I'm a late bloomer.
02:24
This is the flower show.
02:27
Yeah.
02:30
I love acting.
02:33
We get to open people's minds to new ideas.
02:37
Take them beyond what they understand of the world, and help them laugh when things are tough, like now.
02:45
And for a woman like me, who grew up in the 40s and 50s when women weren't supposed to have opinions and get angry,
02:53
acting gave me a chance to play angry women with opinions.
02:57
Which, as you know, is a bit of a stretch for me.
03:04
I'm a big believer in unions.
03:07
Yeah.
03:11
They have our backs.
03:16
They bring us into community, and they give us power.
03:22
Community means power.
03:25
And this is really important right now, when workers' power is being attacked and community is being weakened.
03:37
Yes.
03:39
But SAG-AFTRA is different than most other unions.
03:45
Because us, the workers, we actors, we don't manufacture anything tangible.
03:53
What we create is empathy.
03:57
Our job is to understand another human being so profoundly that we can touch their souls.
04:06
We know why they do what they do.
04:09
We feel their joys and their pains.
04:12
And I can conjure up voices.
04:27
We have to drill deep, don't we?
04:30
We have to know, for example, if a young woman is cutting, or she's a sex worker,
04:39
there's a good chance that as a young girl she was sexually abused or incested.
04:44
Right?
04:45
I'm thinking Brie Daniels and Clute.
04:48
And I'm sure many of you guys have played bullies and misogynists.
04:56
And you can pretty much know, you actors, right, that probably their father bullied them
05:02
and called men that he felt were weak, he called them losers or pussies.
05:08
And while you may hate the behavior of your character,
05:12
you have to understand and empathize with the traumatized person you're playing, right?
05:19
I'm thinking Sebastian Stan in The Apprentice.
05:29
Make no mistake, empathy is not weak or woke.
05:32
And by the way, woke just means you give a damn about other people.
05:38
Back to empathy.
05:46
A whole lot of people are going to be really hurt by what is happening, what is coming our way.
05:55
And even if they're of a different political persuasion,
05:58
we need to call upon our empathy and not judge, but listen from our hearts.
06:06
And welcome them into our tent.
06:09
Because we are going to need a big tent to resist successfully what's coming at us.
06:23
I made my first movie in 1958.
06:26
It was the tail end of McCarthyism, when so many careers were destroyed.
06:33
Today it's helpful to remember, though, that Hollywood resisted.
06:37
We did.
06:39
Overseas, brave American producers like Hannah Weinstein hired blacklisted writers.
06:46
Myrna Lloyd, John Huston, and Billy Wilder founded the Committee for the First Amendment.
06:52
They had a radio show on ABC radio called Hollywood Fights Back.
07:00
Members of the committee included every big-name actor in town.
07:08
Have any of you ever watched a documentary of one of the great social movements,
07:14
like apartheid or our civil rights movement or Stonewall,
07:18
and asked yourself, would you have been brave enough to walk the bridge?
07:24
Would you have been able to take the hoses and the batons and the dogs?
07:30
We don't have to wonder anymore, because we are in our documentary moment.
07:37
This is it.
07:39
And it's not a rehearsal.
07:45
This is it.
07:48
And we mustn't for a moment kid ourselves about what's happening.
07:54
This is big-time serious, folks.
07:58
So let's be brave.
08:00
This is a good time for a little Norma Rae or Karen Silkwood or Tom Joad.
08:07
We must not isolate.
08:09
We must stay in community.
08:12
We must help the vulnerable.
08:15
We must find ways to project an inspiring vision of the future,
08:19
one that is beckoning, welcoming,
08:22
that will help people believe that, to quote the novelist Pearl Cleague,
08:26
on the other side of the conflagration, there will still be love,
08:31
there will still be beauty,
08:34
and there will be an ocean of truth for us to swim in.
08:39
Let's make it so.
08:42
Thank you for this encouragement.
