00:04Today is the first step of a long and difficult journey,

00:06but an important one.

00:08And President Trump is committed to bringing

00:09an end to this conflict, as he said

00:11when he campaigned for president.

00:13And he wants it to end in a way that's fair.

00:15He wants it to end in a way that's

00:16sustainable and enduring, not that leads to another conflict

00:19in two to three years.

00:21That's not going to be easy to achieve,

00:22but he's the only one in the world

00:24that can begin that process.

00:25Donald Trump is the only leader in the world that

00:27could initiate that process.

00:29And today was the first step in that process.

00:33I came away today convinced that they

00:35are willing to begin to engage in a serious process

00:38to determine how and how quickly and through what mechanism

00:43can an end be brought to this war.

00:45Whether we can ultimately reach that outcome

00:47will obviously depend on every side

00:49in this conflict's willingness to agree to certain things.

00:52So I think it's important to have this meeting,

00:55because we haven't really had much engagement

00:57with the Russians for almost three years.

00:59And so I would say to you that in order

01:02to bring an end to any conflict, there

01:04has to be concessions made by all sides.

01:06We're not going to predetermine what those are.

01:08We're certainly not going to negotiate this today

01:11or in a press conference for that matter.

01:13And there are other parties that have sanctions.

01:15The European Union is going to have

01:17to be at the table at some point,

01:18because they have sanctions as well that have been imposed.

01:22But I guess the point here is the goal is,

01:25and we agreed on what the goal is,

01:27the goal is to bring an end to this conflict

01:28in a way that's fair, enduring, sustainable, and acceptable

01:32to all parties involved.

01:34What that looks like, well, that's

01:35what the ongoing engagement is going to be all about.
