The top four parties' chancellor candidates, Friedrich Merz, Olaf Scholz, Robert Habeck and Alice Weidel took to the stage for a fiery, televised debate on Sunday evening.

00:06his main challengers went on TV for a live debate with the opposition leaders.

00:10The Greens candidate Robert Habeck, CDU's leader Friedrich Merz and Alice Weidel of

00:16the far-right Alternative for Germany all shared their views on a wide range of topics.

01:31First of all, I welcome the fact that J.D. Vance, the vice-president of the United States,

01:37has made such a clear statement. He has made himself known for his freedom of expression

01:43and he has made himself known that you are not allowed to build firewalls to exclude

01:48millions of voters from the front line. We have to talk to each other. He has made that

01:52clear. And he has also made it clear, just like Donald Trump, that finally a ceasefire

01:58in Ukraine will be negotiated and peace will be established. That is what the AfD has been

02:04demanding for almost three years now.

02:07The election, which many believe to be the most important one of recent German history,

02:11will take place on the 23rd of February.
