00:00Four reasons why shaking your legs while sitting is a really bad idea from etiquette and cultural perspective
00:09Hello everyone, my name is Yiying, I'm an international etiquette and life skills coach. Today
00:14I'm going to share with you four reasons why shaking your legs while sitting is a really bad idea from etiquette and
00:21cultural perspective. Number one, it's considered really bad manners
00:26When you're shaking legs in front of others, it's a sign of irritation and impatience
00:31It shows that you do not want to be present
00:33It does not make people feel comfortable around you and it's not very respectful
00:38Number two, it doesn't leave a good impression of you on others
00:41It only takes seven seconds for someone to have a first impression of you
00:46And did you know that 55% of that first impression comes from visual image, which is largely your body language
00:54So if you're shaking your legs in front of others
00:56People would have already made an assumption about you even before you had the chance to speak. Number three
01:02It's not very good for your personal brand and reputation, especially in a professional setting. Shaking legs shows that you're anxious
01:10Nervous or even arrogant and it also shows you're lacking the basic self-control
01:16So it could easily impact your ability to get hired for a new job, to get a promotion or build
01:22connections with your clients and your manager. Last but not least
01:26Did you know that this is considered really bad luck in many Asian cultures? In China, for example
01:32Shaking legs means you're shaking your good fortunes away. And in Japan, this is considered extremely bad
01:39They even have a term for it, bingbu yusuri, which means poor person's shake
01:46They believe that people who cannot afford warm clothes in winter or people who have too much spare time to kill
01:52will be shaking their legs. And here's the thing, they won't even tell you
01:58In cultures like China and Japan, the style of communication is considered high context
02:04So they won't be very direct with you. So it's best to learn about those cultural taboos well in advance
02:10Hope you learned something new today
