Indian actor Arjun Rampal, who has survived in Bollywood for nearly two decades with a string of remarkable films like ‘Rock On!!’ and ‘Om Shanti Om’, had just recovered from a nasty bout of COVID-19 that almost ‘wiped him out’. But the former model, who remains one of Hindi cinema’s most criminally-underrated actors, isn’t dwelling on the negatives.

00:00So therefore it's important to as you get older and wiser like me okay it is important to
00:08kind of you know create your own spaces.
00:14I remember watching Daakad as well and thinking you have done really well in that film. I don't
00:18know if you managed to read my review but I was actually quite happy with what you did as well.
00:22So are you happy with the way that movie was received? I know it didn't do well at the box
00:28office but I'm not sure actually these numbers can't be verified so but it was obviously not
00:34how can I be happy when it is received so badly? Has it? Yeah, it's not done well at all okay
00:42that's a known fact you know but like audiences didn't go in to see it that I think was the most
00:48disappointing probably but now it's going to come on the 1st of July it's releasing on MTT
00:55on Zee5. It's such a lovely film actually because it's so different
00:59and that's why I did it. I think there's a lot of work that has gone in which is really excellent
01:05work from the action team, the director, the cinematography, the costumes, the production design
01:14you know the performances so it had everything going for it it's really unfortunate that
01:19it was just not received well. It's interesting to say that as an actor it must be a very scary
01:24phase I think when you just don't know like how to how to go about this entire thing like how are
01:30you choosing I know you said you don't do it based on people's sentiments at that point in time but
01:35how do you choose rules at I mean roles at this point in your life like it's been 20 years right
01:40in Bollywood? I think the only attitude that I have when I do a film I like to mix it up I like
01:47to do work with all kinds of directors, I like to do all kinds of characters. I don't shy away
01:54from anything. I hate creating a comfort zone for my space you know or for myself a place which is
02:02comfortable because I believe that's where one gets complacent and so yes anything that is
02:09different which is something which will take me out of my comfort space I would do.
02:16I know you have a national award under your kitty but I feel you're criminally underrated as an
02:21actor and when Aparna Sen chose you I was like yes she saw it, she saw the spark. Do you feel
02:28that as well? I mean why are you not there more? I want to see more of you I would pay the in fact
02:34I paid the money and saw that so yes there you go. I'm your cheerleader but where are you why don't
02:40we see more of you? That's really sweet of you but really it's a choice that it's my choice it's got
02:48nothing to do with anything else you know there are certain times when me as a person if I'm just
02:54not feeling anything I do like to go into my own shell and you know go away from everything and
03:01everyone and I have felt like that in the past and there was lots that was happening in my own
03:08personal life which I think needed more attention and I needed to be there and because of that I
03:18mean I really, really consciously didn't take on any jobs there were films and there were offers
03:24that were coming but I was just like not in the mindset to sign a movie. Arjun at any point have
03:30you been disenchanted by the Hindi film industry or the entertainment industry at large just being
03:37a public figure even perhaps? No, never with the industry I've never had I owe a lot to this
03:42industry whoever I am today it has given me so much you know so much I mean I was a guy who's
03:51from a small town I never ever thought that I would be in a position like this today in my
03:57thing so I just have the utmost amount of respect for my industry and I think it's a great place
04:04you know it's truly a great, great place there are great people and I've had the opportunity to
04:11work with everybody and you know I've had a good relationship with everybody while working with
04:18them and yeah but it's also a space that kind of takes a lot from me so you know it can
04:27it can swallow you you know and consume you so and that not necessarily meaning from
04:41just your work side of it, it can consume you on a very, very personal level so therefore it's
04:47important to as you get older and wiser like me okay it is important to kind of you know create
04:57your own spaces where you can go away and you can relax and you can you know use your creativity
05:08and everything and just kind of rejuvenate yourself so that's very important but otherwise
05:16this is a fantastic place, it's a great industry and I am extremely fortunate to be a part of it.
