00:00Have you ever wondered which cities fast the most amount of hours and which ones the least?
00:05We used prayer timings in major cities to calculate the intervals between
00:09Fajr and Maghrib on the expected first day of Ramadan, April 13th, 2021.
00:17For example, Murmansk Rasha has just over six hours of darkness before the sun rises again
00:24at 2.43 a.m. which means that the fasting hours are almost 18 hours. They will end their fast
00:31at 8.38 p.m. While the city of Ushuaia in Argentina has the shortest fasting time in the world,
00:3812 hours and 23 minutes to be exact, the sun rises at 6.23 a.m. and sets by 6.46 p.m.
00:47Santiago in Chile also has a comfortable fasting time of 12 hours and 41 minutes.
00:52Those fasting in Riyadh can also take advantage of a shorter fasting day.
00:57Fajr is at 4.12 a.m. and Maghrib is at 6.14 a.m. which means that people in this city
01:04of Saudi Arabia will be fasting for approximately 14 hours and 2 minutes.
01:09Dubai will be fasting for 14 hours and 5 minutes on the first day of Ramadan.
01:14The first Fajr will take place at 4.39 a.m. and Maghrib will be at 6.44 p.m.
01:21Those fasting in Kerala may feel like they have a longer fast
01:25as their Maghrib is slightly later in the day than the UAE.
01:29They're ending their fast at 7 p.m. and starting their fast at 5.05 a.m.
01:33which means they'll be fasting the exact same hours as the UAE at 14 hours and 5 minutes.
01:40Egyptians on the other hand will end their fast earlier at 6.22 p.m. Technically their
01:46fasting hours are longer than in the UAE at 14 hours and 22 minutes
01:51because their Fajr is also slightly earlier.
01:54In countries where the sunset and the sunrise are too close or are indistinguishable,
01:59fatwas have been issued to allow Muslims to follow the timings of the closest city
02:04that has distinguishable day and night timings.
02:07If Ramadan were to take place in June, people in Sweden for example would be observing a
02:12midnight sun phenomenon which would make it nearly impossible for Muslims to fast there.
