00:00Hello everyone! Happy Onam! Well, Onam is a South Indian festival celebrated by Malayalis in the
00:08Indian state of Kerala. Onam is basically a harvest festival and it is celebrated with a lot of pomp
00:16and fervor. This year it is the same albeit a pandemic situation. People in the UAE are making
00:23their best of the Onam celebrations. A lot of them are celebrating it at home with family.
00:30Some of them have also booked restaurants well in advance so they can go and partake in the
00:37traditional Onam Sadhya. So what is Onam Sadhya? Onam Sadhya is a special food that is prepared
00:44for Onam. It has about nine and in some cases it can go up to 14 dishes which includes a lot
00:53of curries, dal as well as some nice rice pudding. Remember Onam is all about celebrating
01:03the harvest festival so rice is a key dish in the Onam Sadhya. So rice puddings are really popular
01:13as well as boiled rice you know mixed with curries and dal are also a popular thing to partake
01:21during Onam. Another thing that marks the celebration of Onam is the festivals and
01:26performances. You have something called a snake boat performance that is really popular as well
01:33as a lot of dancers you will find on the streets of Kerala to mark Onam celebrations. But in all
01:42Onam basically is a celebration of unity and when we say unity this means that it basically brings
01:50people together irrespective of their caste or religion. So in Kerala typically you will find
01:58people of different religions, different castes all sitting together as friends as one unit
02:06and celebrating Onam which makes this truly secular and so beautiful as a celebration.
02:14This is Anjana Kumar for Gulf News. Wishing all the Malayalees around the world a happy
02:20prosperous and a safe Onam. Stay safe. Wishing you and your family a very happy Onam. This
02:26corona situation going on this situation also we are still celebrating our Onam.
02:31Once again I am wishing happy Onam to all.
