00:00As many prisons around the world are struggling to implement precautionary measures for inmates
00:09to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dubai sets an example on how measures can
00:15be done to ensure the safeguard of the human rights and health of prisoners during COVID-19.
00:21I am here at Al-Aweer Central Jail to give you an inside look of precautionary measures
00:26taken by Dubai Police.
00:30All inmates, cleaners, employees of catering companies that provide meals to the prisoners
00:35and policemen were tested to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
00:40Dubai Police has a long list of measures to protect the inmates.
00:43The list includes thermal screening, disinfecting the works and prison facilities, providing
00:47new masks and gloves to the inmates every day.
00:53Using disinfection tunnel, social distancing floor stickers, hand sanitizers as well as
00:59easy access on hygiene products.
01:02The four gyms and playing rooms inside the jail have also been temporarily closed.
01:30In addition to the employees of catering companies, all inmates were tested to prevent the spread
01:37of COVID-19.

01:44of COVID-19.
01:45In addition to the employees of catering companies, all inmates were tested to prevent the spread
01:50of COVID-19.
01:51In addition to the employees of catering companies, all inmates were tested to prevent the spread
01:56of COVID-19.
01:58Thank God, their results were negative.
02:02We, as the administration of Al-Aqaba Hospital, are reassured that they do not have any disease.
02:10Despite the strict measures, inmates can still visit the craft's workshops to learn new
02:15skills.
02:16However, the capacity of the craft center has reduced its capacity to 30%.
02:22Behind a glass soundproof door, inmates are allowed to speak with their families through
02:27a computer screen after visits to Dubai's Central Jail were suspended due to the pandemic.
02:32The use of video conferencing systems is another way authorities are trying to prevent the
02:37spread of the disease in the prison.
02:39In another step to prevent close contact, inmates consult with doctors through a virtual
02:45conference, eliminating the need for a physical visit.
02:53We have now suspended this practice and replaced it with modern technology in response to the
03:01release of the prisoner.
03:05Inmates still have access to study online by dividing them into groups and keep safe
03:09distancing inside the classrooms while using computers.
03:12Inside the prison's library, inmates can enjoy reading e-books through thousands of
03:17titles available on smart devices.
03:20As most of Dubai's police services are available online, the prison's reception welcomes only
03:24a small number of visitors every day.
03:27Communities like people held in prisons are often at risk during public health emergencies,
03:33but precautionary measures like better access to hygiene products and social distancing
03:38are key factors to curb COVID-19.
03:41Dubai's Central Jail has been quite proactive in implementing precautionary measures to
03:47prevent the spread of coronavirus.
03:49I'm Ali Shouk, reporting from Dubai's Central Jail.
