00:00Hi everyone. How are you doing? This is Dr. Hashim Jamal. I'm an ENT consultant at Purgeel

00:13Day Surgery Center. This morning, I'm going to explain to my colleagues, both nurses and

00:19physicians, how to do the proper nasopharyngeal swab specimen. And this specimen is very important

00:26to take it from the nasopharynx so that we get a reliable result with no negative, false

00:33negative testing. Okay, so we will start with the nasopharyngeal swab. So it's very important

00:41to know that the nose, the direction of the nasopharynx goes this way and not up, not

00:47this way. It's very important. That's why when we want to direct our Q-tip or a cotton

00:53bud, we have to direct it to the nasopharynx all the way to the back. So this is the Q-tip

00:59for the specimen taking. And the direction has to be, I'm privileged to be having a nasal

01:05speculum. Nasal speculum will allow me to see the front of the septum and then the floor

01:11of the nose. And this swab should be going right along the nasal septum, along the floor,

01:17all the way to the back. You turn it when you reach, when you hit the nasopharynx, you

01:22turn it to get a better sample and then you go up. This is the proper way of doing it.

01:28If you go in and then you go this way up, for example, like this, improper way, if I

01:34go like this, up, it's improper. It's not good. Therefore, the direction is all the

01:41way to the back. Now I demonstrated to you how to take the proper sample of nasopharyngeal

01:47swab. We as physicians need to get the best samples from the nasopharynx and to ensure

01:55the best result for our patients. And in that way we will all be fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
