00:00Forget the plot, forget the screenplay, forget the stunts, what I was marvelling at most of the time was how did they get their beach-perfect bodies.
00:13This is a review of Malang directed by Mohit Sauri who is known for his revenge dramas.
00:19Now let me tell you what this movie is about. The plot is very simple. It's about two drifters
00:25who land up in Goa. They are in search for a paradise and how do they find paradise?
00:30They go just to rave parties in Goa, which is like the hedonistic place in India
00:35where everybody is looking for some ways to get high on life. Naturally, there's some substance abuse etc
00:42but the movie doesn't dwell on the
00:45drug problem that is in Goa, but it dwells on these two lovers, how they meet, how they find meaning in life and purpose.
00:52They're going through a quarter-life crisis, but they fall in love, but something terrible happens to them and in the end what we have is
00:59how this actor, this hero goes on a killing spree. He lands up in prison. Why is he in prison?
01:06We don't know. This movie oscillates between what happens in the current day when the hero is just out of prison.
01:12He goes on a killing spree played by Aditya Roy Kapoor.
01:15He's Adwait Thakur and then it also takes you back to what happened five years ago and the movie unravels in bits and parts.
01:22So it oscillates between the present and the past. It's a very interesting technique to keep us hooked.
01:28I won't give too much of the movie away because if I give spoilers, then it would ruin the whole experience for you.
01:34There is some twist which is quite interesting regarding the acting. Aditya Roy Kapoor,
01:40let's just take a moment and just admire his abs and of course, Disha Patani's body.
01:45I mean both of them look as if they have, you know, been off carbs for at least two years or water for some time.
01:51They look really in shape and when they are doing these beach perfect activities,
01:57I can't help but look at them and just admire them. I'm forgetting why they are together because they're so good looking.
02:02So that's one of the things that go for this movie that really works is how good looking the entire cast is.
02:08But you know who had my heart? It was actor Anil Kapoor. This man is so much fun as this roguish cop.
02:16I mean imagine, he doesn't have a great body. He's well preserved. He doesn't look as youthful as the lead pair.
02:21But there is Anil Kapoor who's breathed so much life and fun and worth into this roguish cop.
02:27He's the kind of cop who snorts cocaine before pumping bullets into a culprit's body.
02:34I mean his ways of functioning as a cop is very questionable. Police brutality is glorified to the
02:41nth factor here. It's not always very pleasant to watch. The stun sequences are bloody.
02:47I mean there are times when violence against women or violence against humans in general
02:52is quite difficult to watch. In fact the stun sequences, they look good but it's not an easy
02:58thing to digest. I mean there's so much blood, there's gore, there's a lot of hand-to-hand combat
03:03which is not always a pleasant watch but that's what makes Mohit Suri's films a tick.
03:09There are good songs, good stunts and some good looking people. Another thing that really struck
03:14me was how good looking the entire cops of Goa are. Unlike the reality where some people
03:19are not so well shaped, all the special unit officers in this department are collectively
03:27good looking and they're in top shape but they're very morally ambiguous, they're quite corrupt,
03:31there's a lot going on in there which we come to later. Now coming to Kunal Khemu who really
03:36had my heart as well. He is so good as the antagonist. I mean that is revealed only till
03:41the end so for those who hate spoilers stop watching right now but Kunal Khemu, I think this
03:46is one of his career defining roles because he brings this correct balance of gravitas as well
03:52as pure evil. His unadulterated evil in his role as an abuser. I mean to everybody else he pretends
04:00to be this perfect gentleman but there's a lot of dark and evil lurking behind him. He's very
04:06dysfunctional. So it is great to see Kunal Khemu also flexes acting muscles and of all the actors
04:12more than the lead pair they look perfect but it's the other supporting roles that really did
04:17well in this film. One thing that you have to let go is logic. If you're looking for rationale, if
04:24you're looking for logic, if you're looking for like reasoning then this is not the movie for you.
04:29This movie demands that you suspend belief. The script isn't as solid as the lead pair's washboard
04:36abs but that's a small ripple in an otherwise enjoyable film. At no point was I very bored. More
04:43than the romantic sequences between the drifters, how they discover each other's love, how they
04:48you know how they come together, then they fall apart, then they come together again. It did not
04:53have my heart. It is the ones where the killing spree starts. Why did he start killing that had me?
04:58So that's what I enjoyed most. Regarding the pace, it's very quick. The songs are also quite
05:03interesting. It's good for a one-time watch. I have gone with three out of five.
