00:00Hello, welcome to Golf News special roundtable on the Cricket World Cup.
00:08We've assembled an excellent group of journalists from around the Golf News studio to talk about
00:13the upcoming three games.
00:15Not a single one of them has any experience whatsoever in sports, so we'll just be winging
00:20it today.
00:21We have Alexander Cornwell, a business journalist.
00:23We have Shan Krizna, one of our senior editors.
00:26We have Nick Robinson from radio.
00:28We have Sujitha Chaudhary, a senior reporter.
00:31We also have Jay Lenton, one of our senior video editors.
00:34The first question I'm going to put out to the panel is, what is a wicket and what makes
00:39it sticky?
00:40Nick?
00:41A wicket is an Ewok from the planet Endor.
00:42What makes it sticky?
00:43I think peanut butter.
00:44I have to disagree there.
00:45I'm pretty sure it was a brand of chewing gum that I grew up with.
00:53Isn't those things in the ground in the grass at night?
00:55This is a work of art.
00:56If you don't know wicket, you don't be telling me what cricket is.
01:00So wicket is the stumps.
01:01You see there are three stumps on either side, they are called wickets, and pitch is also
01:05sometimes called a wicket.
01:07How do each one of you know your team?
01:09Do you know them well?
01:11Personally, best friends.
01:14Best friends?
01:15I think so.
01:16Alright, who's the captain of your team?
01:17And what is your team?
01:18New Zealand.
01:19And it's Richie McCord.
01:20Jay?
01:21Well, South Africa is a democracy, so we don't really have captains.
01:24It's not like pirateship.
01:25Everyone kind of makes decisions collectively.
01:26I thought the Australians were the pirates.
01:27No, our captain is Michael Clarke, but he might be retiring this week or have a back
01:28injury, so we're not too sure.
01:29I know that my captain is Mohenjo-Singh Dhoni, because we see so many of his ads on television.
01:30So I know him from that.
01:31Sam, back to you.
01:32I'm Len Leighton here.
01:33Nick and Jay here.
01:34Your captain is Brennan McCullum, and your captain is...
01:35Sam.
01:36Sam.
01:37Sam.
01:38Sam.
01:39Sam.
01:40Sam.
01:41Sam.
01:42Sam.
01:43Sam.
01:44Sam.
01:45Sam.
01:46Sam.
01:47Sam.
01:48Sam.
01:49Sam.
01:50Sam.
01:51Sam.
01:52Sam.
01:53Sam.
01:54Sam.
01:55Sam.
01:56Sam.
01:57Sam.
01:58Sam.
01:59Sam.
02:00Sam.
02:01Sam.
02:02Sam.
02:03Sam.
02:04Sam.
02:05Sam.
02:06Sam.
02:07Sam.
02:08Sam.
02:09Sam.
02:10Sam.
02:11Sam.
02:12Sam.
02:13Sam.
02:14Sam.
02:15Sam.
02:16Sam.
02:17Sam.
02:18Sam.
02:20Okay.
02:21Simply put, there is a natural swing to the ball.
02:23When the ball is new and shiny, it swings a particular way.
02:26But when the ball gets older, it's difficult to swing.
02:29So what they do is they use sweat or spittle to make one side heavier.
02:33So it swings the other way.
02:34So the ball swings exactly the opposite way it should swing.
02:37That's why it's called a loose end.
02:39Doesn't make any sense.
02:41All right.
02:42Now, I'm not an expert on cricket.
02:44I've seen one game.
02:45But I've been a baseball fan my entire life.
02:48So I consider myself.
02:49They're all kind of the same.
02:50Can you tell me the major differences of why baseball is a better sport?
02:54Baseball is not a better sport.
02:55So the argument ends there.
02:57Okay.
02:58What makes cricket a better sport?
02:59Cricket is a better sport.
03:00You can see 90,000 people watching it simply because it's a better sport.
03:04I've never seen baseball.
03:07In Australia, we actually have a game called Aussie Rules.
03:09And it's played on the same field as the cricket.
03:11But that's a better sport.
03:13So cricket is just a byproduct that we do in our off time in Australia.
03:16Who's going to be the top scorer of runs in this upcoming games?
03:20By many of you, I'm saying Bolt because he's the fastest runner there is.
03:24Right?
03:25Martin Goldfish.
03:28Who's Martin Goldfish?
03:29Goldfish?
03:30No.
03:31Martin Guptill.
03:32Oh, Guptill.
03:33Yeah, Martin Guptill.
03:34I go in.
03:35I would do Elias.
03:37Who's that?
03:38He's the South African captain.
03:39A lot of talk about South Africa getting ready to choke in these upcoming games.
03:43What's your view on that?
03:44Well, I think that if they're just really bare down, get their head in it,
03:48stay away from small objects, small sweets.
03:51Just don't really put anything in your mouth that is a choking hazard.
03:55Then you're going to get to that field and you're going to play a good game
03:58and you're going to do your best.
03:59Alex, what's your view on Australia?
04:01How will they do in these upcoming games?
04:02Well, it's a home-grown advantage.
04:05And really, New Zealand is a small part of Australia.
04:08So either way, we'll be coming out on top.
04:10It's a 50-50 chance going into the final.
04:12How about New Zealand?
04:13Will that bring pride to Australia if they win?
04:15Crickets will be whacked.
04:17Sport will be the winner on the day.
04:19Obviously, cricket is a big sport in India.
04:21How do you think India is going to do?
04:23The Indians are hoping to win the cup.
04:26But I really don't know.
04:27Because there's no competition at all.
04:30So who's going to be the overall winner in this tournament?
04:32Who's your prediction?
04:33I honestly have no idea at all.
04:35I couldn't give you an educated guess if I wanted to.
04:37But I would say to say that Australia is going to win,
04:40so probably New Zealand will come out on top.
04:42Is it India?
04:43India.
04:44India.
04:45Jay?
04:46Well, obviously, I'm going to go with South Africa.
04:49But anything can happen on the day.
04:51And with all these choking hazards that you've been talking about,
04:53I'm just actually really worried for everyone at the moment.
04:56Nick?
04:57New Zealand.
04:58My money would be on South Africa,
05:00simply because there's a much more balanced side.
05:02They've got a very good, very balanced bowling attack
05:05and decent batsmen, too.
05:09So you're saying South Africa is going to win the Cricket World Cup?
05:11Absolutely.
05:12You're going to be very popular.
05:17All right, everyone.
05:18Thank you for joining our special panel.
05:20And remember to watch the World Series when it happens this weekend.
05:22Thank you very much.
