01:30During the summer, it's not only the temperature that goes up.
01:34Health experts point out that the number of heat-related illnesses also increases.
01:39When you go out and you get exposed to the sun, the first effect is the person gets prone
01:44to dehydration.
01:45So there's a lot of loss of fluids from the body through sweat.
01:48Those sweats are a very cooling effect, yet you lose a lot of salts, particularly sodium
01:54and potassium, which in turn affects the kidney and the brain and the heart eventually.
01:59A person gets dehydrated, there are different stages, you know, it may start from cramps
02:03only.
02:04Then the cramps, if they are not treated, the person doesn't get rehydrated and he's
02:08not cooled, he's not put inside a room which is air conditioned, the temperature is not
02:12brought down.
02:14Of course, it may pass on to heat exhaustion and then finally eventually it goes up to
02:19heat stroke.
02:20And the exposure of skin to the sun, again, that gives you dark skin and it's really irritating
02:29also the skin gets irritated and eventually it's the UV rays directly hits the skin and
02:35skin is prone to cancers, various types of cancers.
02:40And so hydration is really important.
02:42You need to take precaution in taking lots of fluids and cover yourself completely when
02:48you go out.
02:49When we talk about allergies, of course, there's a flare-up in allergies as well because
02:53as you know, when we talk about allergies, we think about spring season, but in summers
02:59there are certain allergies when there is especially a lot of dust in the air, gastroenteritis.
03:04Since food becomes really sensitive, you leave it out for a few minutes and then you're prone
03:08to get these kinds of GI symptoms.
03:10Residents, most especially those who work outdoors, must therefore be extra cautious
03:14and careful.
03:16Dubai government has itself strictly imposed a mandatory midday break during the summer
03:21months for laborers who work in the sun.
03:24So as the summer heat intensifies, it will certainly help to remember a few simple steps
03:28to beat summer illnesses.
03:30Drink lots of liquid, stay indoors as much as possible, and exercise regularly to stay
03:35physically fit.
