Met Office gives snow update for the weekend

A Met Office forecast discusses the chances of sleet and snow this weekend.

00:00Most of that precipitation from the low pressure is likely to be rain,

00:04but we could see some snow flurries here and there.

00:06Now, this is the freezing level,

00:10basically how high up through the sky you've got to go before you get to zero Celsius,

00:15and it's an indication of where we could see some snow falling.

00:19You can see the lowest freezing level, those grey colours, 200 metres down across parts of the southeast.

00:25That's on Friday.

00:26So when we see those odd showers coming in, we could easily see a little bit of sleet and snow mixed in.

00:32Notice the freezing level way up there across northern parts of Scotland.

00:37As we go through Friday night, what we'll see is the air,

00:40the colder air spreading more widely across England and Wales,

00:44that freezing level dropping down right across England and Wales.

00:47But remember, for most places, it's still going to be dry.

00:51So for snow, you need two things.

00:53You need it to be cold, but you also need that moisture.

00:56And for many places, it's going to be dry.

00:58And by the time we get to Saturday, when we have that rain mix coming in across these eastern areas,

01:03notice the freezing level has risen somewhat.

01:06So, yeah, it's kind of on the cusp,

01:08but we suspect at this stage most of the wet weather across the east is going to be sleet, rain,

01:14maybe a little bit of snow on some higher routes.

01:16We're not expecting it to cause huge amounts of disruption.

01:19Something to watch.

01:20But at this stage, we're not expecting huge amounts of snowfall.
