00:18The CDC says this case is severe,

00:21so much so the person is hospitalized in critical condition.

00:27A well-known magazine called Nature has recently announced

00:30that the risk of bird flu spreading among humans is increasing.

00:36Scientists warn that once the virus has the ability to infect humans,

00:40humans may welcome the next global pandemic.

00:43Is it time for a storm?

00:46The virus has infected more than 900 herds and 67 people in the U.S.,

00:53killing one individual.

00:55The experts in the Times article said that

00:57while a human pandemic is not inevitable,

01:00some developments indicate that the possibility may no longer be quite so remote.

01:07Although experts believe that the pandemic has not yet settled,

01:10the Nature article's analysis has raised a more worrying trend.

01:14Because the H5N1 virus is mutating,

01:17it may evolve in the direction it can spread among humans.

01:20The article said that although most infections are mild,

01:23the H5N1 virus has already found new mutants that adapt to mammals and pigs.

01:29Especially when the virus is transmitted to humans directly from the vagina during contact,

01:34it may cause serious illness or even death.

01:37The virus scientist at Emory University,

01:38Rakh Davala, warned that if the virus continues to mutate,

01:42it may increase the risk of spreading among humans.

02:26Nevertheless, most cases of human infection

02:29are due to contact with infected birds or cows,

02:32not human-to-human transmission.

02:34It's not circulating in humans,

02:35but it is jumping into humans who are exposed,

02:38particularly those exposed to poultry or to the dairy cattle,

02:42the two sort of groups where we're seeing most of the movement

02:45from animal to human,

02:47but we're not seeing sustained circulation.

02:49So every time a person comes in contact with this virus

02:53or gets infected with the virus,

02:55there is that small possibility that there could be a genetic mutation

02:59that would then allow the virus to be transmitted person-to-person.

03:02That risk is really, really low.

03:04It's a relief to hear that.

03:07There is no evidence yet that the H5N1 virus can be air-transmitted.

03:10However, if humans come in contact with infected poultry or cattle,

03:14the risk of infection is still very high.

03:16And the H5N1 air-transmission is definitely not complete.

03:19Its mortality rate is very high.

03:20Since 2013,

03:22nearly 900 cases of H5N1 have been reported worldwide.

03:26About 60% of them died,

03:29which is much higher than the mortality rate of 0.1% of normal air-transmission.

03:33At present, the scientific community is still highly vigilant

03:35against the mutation of the H5N1 virus.

03:37If the H5N1 mutated virus

03:39repeats the evolution of the H5N1 virus,

03:41with the ability to air-transmit person-to-person,

03:43perhaps the world will welcome the 2.0 version of the H5N1 epidemic.
