00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the unforgettable hit songs
00:08that are also really funny.
00:10For this list, we'll be looking at songs that are genuinely good, but feature some
00:14very funny lyrics.
00:20Number 10.
00:21I'm Too Sexy
00:23Right Said Fred
00:24Told from the point of view of a narcissistic male model, this campy dance track from British
00:35band Right Said Fred feels like a look inside the mind of Derek Zoolander.
00:40It's as unforgettable as it is ridiculous.
00:50Inspiration for the song actually started with its most famous lyric, I'm too sexy
00:55for my shirt.
01:03The band was making fun of self-absorbed men and ended up accidentally creating an iconic
01:08pop song as a result.
01:10Catchy, satirical, and just really fun to sing and dance along to, I'm Too Sexy is
01:15distanced enough from its cringy narrator for everyone to enjoy.
01:22Number 9.
01:23Whip It
01:24Devo
01:25Easily one of the most 80's songs to ever exist, the lyrics of this new wave synth pop
01:30classic have inspired countless musings and analyses of its meaning.
01:39But one thing is for certain, its collection of cliches and unhelpful instructions for
01:43locating and eliminating problems is actually really confusing.
01:47For such a well-known and well-worn retro hit, Whip It makes little sense at face value.
01:55What do you mean by whip it and why are you suddenly talking about cream that sat out
01:59too long?
02:03The lyrics are probably even more fun for listeners who are convinced they have a naughty
02:08double meaning.
02:13Number 8.
02:14Stacey's Mom
02:15Fountains of Wayne
02:17This 2003 single and its accompanying music video is the epitome of 2000's pop punk cheekiness.
02:31Part of what makes Stacey's Mom so hilarious is just how bold it is.
02:35The song's narrator is hilariously cocky about his crush on an older woman.
02:47His shameless way of letting Stacey down easy while still trying to come over to get a glimpse
02:51of her mom is the kind of stuff you'd expect from an American Pie movie.
03:03Mixing the juvenile humor of sex comedies with an earworm chorus, this iconic song became
03:09Fountains of Wayne's highest charting single.
03:16Number 7.
03:17Gonna Make You Sweat
03:19Everybody Dance Now
03:20C&C Music Factory
03:29This 1990 smash hit by the massively successful producing duo Clavillus and Cole and their
03:35C&C Music Factory supergroup has one of the most instantly recognizable hooks in pop music.
03:41The rest of its lyrics haven't necessarily endured in cultural memory.
03:51Most of the song features pretty standard, simple rhymes about getting on the dance floor.
04:00Everyone in the 90s was too busy dancing to notice the words, but there's a lot to chew
04:04on in there.
04:05Lines like,
04:06I'm just a squirrel trying to get a nut to move your butt should not be ignored.
04:18Number 6.
04:19We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
04:21Taylor Swift
04:22Given how much her personal life was dominating the news cycle at the time, everyone was absolutely
04:36eating up this wry revenge song from Taylor Swift.
04:48Addressing a frustrating ex who never makes time for her yet still always comes crawling
04:53back, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is her sarcastic battle cry.
05:03Anyone who's ever wanted to stick it to an ex can relate.
05:06From mimicking her ex's accent to taking apart all his pretensions and belittling statements,
05:12she lets him have it in the most glorious way possible.
05:15There's no way not to sing this one at the top of your lungs.
05:25Number 5.
05:26The Fox, What Does The Fox Say?
05:29Ylvis
05:30If you don't remember this one, you must have blocked it out because it was everywhere.
05:42Day in, day out, we all heard this Norwegian pop duo's viral novelty song.
05:47The music video has over a billion views on YouTube.
05:50It's probably safe to say it's not because the lyrics are incredibly deep.
06:00Aside from posing some deeply philosophical questions about lupine communication, comedy
06:05duo-turned-hitmakers Ylvis leaned heavily into the bizarre.
06:16Throughout The Fox, they cycle through a series of animal noises followed by several bars
06:21of rhythmic, almost belligerent gibberish.
06:23It's impossible not to be charmed by just how dumb it is in the best way.
06:33Number 4.
06:34I'm On A Boat, The Lonely Island Featuring T-Pain
06:37This one is so convincing as an actual rap song that it's kind of easy to forget that
06:42it's meant to be a parody.
06:44Well, maybe the stuff about climbing buoys and owning flippy floppies tipped you off.
06:54But I'm On A Boat is an uproariously funny song full of pop culture references and genuinely
07:00unhinged bragging.
07:01Most famous for their work on Saturday Night Live, the trio consisting of Andy Samberg,
07:12Yorma Ticone, and Akiva Schaefer wrote several viral pop spoofs.
07:20But a collaboration with T-Pain actually put them on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and earned
07:25them a Grammy nod.
07:30Number 3.
07:31WAP, Cardi B Featuring Megan Thee Stallion
07:34Let's face it, we all needed a laugh in 2020.
07:44From its repeated hook to its not-safe-for-work full title, WAP was making listeners belly
07:49laugh at the absurdity and shameless naughtiness of it all.
07:57Released at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, this brash, vulgar, and endlessly quotable
08:02hip-hop duet climbed the charts and whipped up a moral panic.
08:10Hyper-specific and filled with the most hilarious and obscene imagery, WAP features Cardi B
08:16and Megan Thee Stallion describing erotic scenes in vivid detail.
08:20A few years later, it still has the power to make us gasp and guffaw.
08:29Number 2.
08:30Barbie Girl, Aqua Upon its release in 1997, the Europop single
08:41immediately became a massive earworm, like its namesake doll.
08:45So cute and bubbly, you might not expect there to be any subtext here, but the provocative,
08:55satirical lyrics are enough to make you pause once you realize what the song is actually
09:00doing.
09:01Sure, they're just describing the things you can do with a Barbie doll, right?
09:09Not everyone was laughing.
09:10Mattel actually sued MCA Records, Aqua's American label, for violating several Barbie-related
09:17copyrights.
09:18The suit went nowhere.
09:19Mattel would later use the song in its own marketing.

09:45Number 1.
09:46Baby Got Back, Sir Mix-a-Lot
09:55This track from the early 90s has been referenced, sampled, and parodied several times, including
10:01Nicki Minaj's Anaconda.
10:03But the original was a culture shift.
10:05Sir Mix-a-Lot's ode to big butts and thick bodies is full of hysterically funny and downright
10:11goofy lyrics.
10:16From the opening dialogue addressed to someone named Becky to the stream of compliments,
10:21Baby Got Back is a ride from start to finish.
10:24While some critics thought the song was misogynistic, Sir Mix-a-Lot felt he was celebrating body
10:29positivity.
10:30Regardless, lines like, red beans and rice didn't miss her, and begging for a piece
10:36of that bubble are hard to get out of your head once you hear them.
10:41What's a pop song that makes you laugh?
