Trump orders Pentagon to prepare detention centre for migrants at Guantanamo Bay

The US military base in Cuba has been used to house detainees from the US war on terrorism.

00:00U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will sign an executive order to instruct the Pentagon

00:07and the Department of Homeland Security to expand a migrant detention facility at the

00:12U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay.

00:15We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening

00:22the American people. Some of them are so bad we don't even trust the countries to hold

00:26them because we don't want them coming back so we're going to send them out to Guantanamo.

00:31The base in Cuba has historically been used to detain suspects from the U.S. war on terrorism

00:37and is already home to a facility which houses Haitians and Cubans picked up at sea.

00:43Its extension would make space for up to 30,000 migrants and signals the Pentagon's widening

00:49role in Trump's plans to crack down on illegal migration.

00:54It comes after Trump signed the bipartisan Lake and Riley Act into law on Wednesday as

00:59his administration's first piece of legislation.

01:03The act states that people who are in the United States illegally and are accused of

01:08theft and violent crimes would have to be detained and potentially deported before conviction.
