00:00Cardiff University is one of the most highly regarded across Wales and the rest of the
00:05United Kingdom. It's a classic old university which has over a century of history, being
00:10founded way back in 1883 and is the only Russell Group uni in Wales.
00:15Despite its stature though as a very well established university, they are no different
00:19to plenty more around the country and the rest of the world, falling foul to added financial
00:23pressures and the everyday running of the organisation. The university have said they
00:27plan on cutting up to 400 jobs which means roughly 7% of the total workforce and also
00:32includes a number of courses being axed like nursing, music and modern languages.
00:38Some lecturers and staff members have already received notice of voluntary redundancies
00:42and union groups have spoken out against the job cuts and have said they will fight the
00:46decision tooth and nail. The university says that due to a precarious financial situation,
00:51dwindling international student numbers and running costs, it could be necessary to ensure
00:56the academic future of the university.
