TTUTA is hoping that a promise of an audit on contract teachers in Tobago is not an election gimmick. Reporter Elizabeth Williams met with the TTUTA Tobago officer and has this report.

Transcript
00:00Mr. Roberts was joined on Tuesday by General Secretary of TUTA, Katie Beckles,
00:06following a virtual meeting with the President of TUTA, Martin Lumpking, and
00:11other officials. TUTA also met with contract teachers on Tuesday afternoon.
00:16TUTA cannot sit back and just hope that this audit is going to be done by
00:22April or start in April to treat with our contract teachers. What we do
00:27understand is our election year and we do not want our members to be given any
00:33mammogizum and the political tactics because we have all these years to treat
00:37with this because I would have written back in January 2023 and as in 2025 we
00:45are getting a promise of an audit. Mr. Roberts said the long-standing issue of
00:49gratuity payments to teachers must be dealt with as a priority by the Division
00:55of Education. The other issue was that they complained that the gratuity is a
01:02challenge due to the way in which releases are coming from Trinidad. It is
01:06something that we are not willing to accept. We understand that there are
01:09financial challenges and it is for the THC to plan accordingly to ensure that
01:13our contract teachers receive their gratuity and they receive the
01:17gratuity on time. Last week, Education Secretary Zorisha Hackett met with
01:22contract teachers in Tobago and some assurances were made to just over 100
01:28affected educators. The highlight for me is that they would be increasing their
01:34salary based on the negotiation I've had for the in-service persons. They try to
01:40marry the contract salary with what the with a particular point on the salary
01:45scale for the in-service teachers. That should be effective October 2023 I was
01:51told. So those teachers may receive between 4,000-5,000 as a back pay.
02:01Roberts told the TV6 News, Tutor Tobago is scheduled to meet with the Division
02:06of Education next month to continue to treat with matters affecting Tobago's
02:11teachers. Elizabeth Williams, TV6 News.
