Gloomy Start to Lunar New Year in Quake-Hit Southern Taiwan

It's a gloomy Lunar New Year's Eve in Nanxi District in southern Taiwan, still reeling from last week's 6.2-magnitude earthquake, with many homes previously thought to be undamaged now showing signs of crumbling.

00:00This is not how the people of Tainan's Nanxi District expected to spend their Lunar New Year's Eve.

00:11This impromptu meal is charity for those displaced by the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit southern Taiwan a week ago.

00:18A local temple has put together supplies of food, sleeping mats and other essentials.

00:25The list of affected people is growing, as over a hundred homes that were not originally thought to be damaged now start to crumble.

00:43And it's hard to tell who really needs help.

00:46At this aid station, a group of eight people posing as victims turned out to just be looking for a handout.

00:56But there are those who genuinely have nowhere to go, and those who may feel unsafe at home as aftershocks of 4.5 or greater continue.

01:05For these people, this new year will be remembered as the one they had to spend in a tent.

01:11As the rest of the country enjoys the holiday break, people in this part of the south face a mess to clean up and worries about what comes next.
