London set for 45mph winds as storm hits

More bad weather is set to hit London.

00:00London has braced itself for more stormy weather as Storm Herminia hits the UK, bringing winds

00:10of up to 80mph. The capital could see gusts of up to 45mph at the start of the week. The

00:20Met Office has warned the damage could be more widespread due to the impact of Storm

00:26Owen last week, causing injuries and dangers to life. The Met Office has also warned of

00:34localised flooding and delays to road and rail travel, as well as possible power cuts

00:40that are expected. Severe disruption has been caused to the railways. National Rail has

00:46reported issues between Guildford and Ash, East Croydon and Uckfield, Reading and Taunton

00:52and Hastings. Passengers have been advised to check their route before they travel. With

00:59a stream of weather warnings recently, has the weather worsened in the capital and is

01:04the city well equipped at dealing with wet and windy weather?

01:09I think we're good to say if it's getting worse. I'm inclined to say yes, especially

01:15knowing the situation with climate change, but I don't know how much of my perception

01:18is driven by my awareness of climate change. It's really easy to feel like everywhere else

01:24has better weather than we do. In terms of London being equipped, I'm from up north,

01:29so by comparison, yes, definitely. It's much more disastrous up there. But I would argue

01:35that in terms of our housing situation and the standard of housing, especially if we're

01:40looking at social housing and housing that's available for people on benefits, etc, then

01:47definitely not. I think there's a lot that needs to be done there in terms of making

01:51sure that people's homes are equipped with a change in weather. But beyond that, I couldn't say.

01:58But when bad weather hits the capital, what are TfL doing to help Londoners?

02:03I mean our staff work really hard to minimise disruption as far as we possibly can. And

02:08when there are big storms like there's been recently, you know, that we can suffer from

02:11flooding, trees down on lines, we have a response team that come out to fix those as soon as

02:16possible. What we encourage all of our passengers to do, our customers to do, is to plan their

02:21journey before they travel. So you can look at the TfL Go app, you can look at the website,

02:25talk to station staff and they'll help you plan your journeys basically.

02:31Airport disruption could also be likely, so those looking to escape this weather should

02:36check ahead for any flight delays. As of 10am on the 27th of January, British Airways already

02:43cancelled 26 flights to and from London Heathrow, with somewhere between 3,000 to 4,000 passengers

02:52affected. They are all short-haul domestic and European flights.
