00:00There were twenty-six children at the party, all of them happy and enjoying themselves.
00:07It started at about half-past nine that morning on a warm summer's day, but he had targeted
00:13those very young children for the horrific, extreme violence he was intent upon.
00:22At eleven-forty-five that morning he arrived and walked straight into the building, up
00:26the stairs to where he could hear the sound of happy children.
00:32In his mind was the intention to murder as many of them as he physically could.
00:38He wanted to try and carry out mass murder of innocent, happy, young girls.
00:47And over about fifteen minutes he savagely killed three of them and attempted to kill
00:52eight more, as well as two adults who tried to stop him.
00:57On counts one to three murder, I sentence him to custody for life with a minimum term
01:02which he must serve in custody of fifty-two years, less the time he's served already.
01:09He's been in custody for a hundred and seventy-five days on remand, which will be credited, therefore
01:14the minimum term is fifty-one years and one hundred and ninety days.
01:19On counts four to eleven, I sentence him concurrently to custody for life with a minimum
01:24term of eighteen years, less one hundred and seventy-five days served, on each count concurrently
01:30with each other, allowing for his time served on remand, the minimum term on those counts
01:35is seventeen years and one hundred and ninety days.
01:39On counts twelve and thirteen, I sentence him concurrently to custody for life with
01:43a minimum term of sixteen years, less his time served on remand, on each count concurrently
01:49with each other, leading to a minimum term on those counts of fifteen years and one hundred
01:55and ninety days.
01:57On counts fourteen and sixteen, I sentence him to eighteen months' custody concurrently
02:01with each other and all other offences.
02:04He will pay the appropriate amount under eighteen statutory charge, which will be entered on
02:14the court record.
02:17In total, I sentence Rudi Cabana to thirteen sentences of custody for life and a minimum
02:23term to be served in custody of fifty-one days and one hundred and ninety days.
02:28It is highly likely that he will never be released.
