Trump Unveils Raft of Sweeping Executive Orders Targeting Immigration, Climate

In his first day back in office, U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a raft of sweeping executive orders targeting immigration, the climate and international relations.

00:14unveiled a raft of executive orders aimed at cracking down on immigration.

00:19On his first day in office, Trump declared a national emergency at his country's border

00:24with Mexico, claiming America's sovereignty is under attack.

00:29All migrants will now be deported instead of being released in the U.S., while they

00:32await immigration court hearings.

00:35He also ordered the shutdown of the CPB1 app, which allowed migrants seeking asylum in the

00:40U.S. to schedule appointments for processing.

00:54Following through on another campaign promise, the U.S. president signed an executive order

00:58seeking to revoke birthright citizenship, which provided automatic citizenship for people

01:03born in the U.S., including undocumented migrants.

01:07It's expected these border policies could result in mass deportations, but with birthright

01:13citizenship protected by the 14th Amendment, at least 22 states have already moved to challenge

01:18the order.

01:19Today, I'm also following through on a promise to take action if Trump violates the law and

01:28infringes on our rights, on your rights, as he did today with what is, frankly, an un-American

01:37executive order.

01:40I have one message for President Trump.

01:43I'll see you in court.

01:45It's not the only executive order facing legal action.

01:48An American civil rights organization focused on LGBTQI plus rights is looking to sue over

01:54Trump's declaration the federal government would only recognize two genders.

02:00Also among his first executive orders was the reversal of climate policy, including

02:04the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, declaring the U.S. would drill, baby drill.

02:09He also exited the World Health Organization.

02:13Even closer to home, Trump pardoned or granted clemency to around 1,500 January 6 rioters

02:18who stormed the Capitol with his encouragement in 2021.

02:23Among the hundreds already released, the former leader of the Proud Boys and many other members

02:28of right-wing militia organizations.

02:29I feel vindicated and validated.

02:30Yes, absolutely.

02:31Of course, I haven't gotten a pardon yet.

02:32I got commutation.

02:33But I'm applying for one.

02:34I'm pretty positive I'll get one.

02:38As Trump's executive orders are set in motion, he's touting many other changes, threatening

02:43to further sanction Russia if President Putin refuses to negotiate about ending the war

02:47in Ukraine and signaling plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexico and Canada and

02:54fresh tariffs for Beijing.

02:56We're talking about a tariff of 10 percent on China based on the fact that they're sending

03:01fentanyl to Mexico and Canada.

03:03Amid the extensive changes to the U.S. policy agenda, the bishop at an interfaith service

03:08of prayer in Washington made a plea for compassion directly to Trump, who is sitting in the congregation.

03:15Let me make one final plea, Mr. President.

03:21Millions have put their trust in you, and as you told the nation yesterday, you have

03:26felt the providential hand of a loving God.

03:34In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are

03:43scared now.

03:45But there are limitations to Trump's executive orders.

03:48They can still be blocked by both Congress and the courts.

03:52For now, Trump is showing no sign of slowing down, leaving many feeling uncertain across

03:57America and the globe.
